"But why is the rum gone!"

Sorry had to be said.

Maxime the only issue with your character is you may not be able to take the feat Extra Rage Power at first level because it requires the Rage Power ability as a prerequisite...

Oh crap! You're right! Can I "hold" my feats until level 2, to qualify? Or shall I rather take Dodge and Power Attack? Maxime'd be taking both feats eventually anyway - I just wanted to get the basic character concept done in level 1.

Out of thread: I have heard that it is possible to take any feat without meeting its prerequisites, only that the feat has no effect until such time that the character qualifies for it - but I don't know if this is a valid interpretation of core rules.

I had always thought that you needed to meet the feat pre-requisites before you could take a feat, but it is an interesting question :-)

That is how I always have run t. If you can't meet it then you can not take it and I do not think you can save feats or skill points for later

The thing is, it is possible to qualify for feats using items. For example if you have 12 Int and use a headband to get +2 Int, then you qualify for Combat Expertise; but you cannot use it if you take the headband off. At least that was the FAQ ruling in 3.5

that is because you meet the perquisite. But if ya loose it ya no longer do. This is just like if ya get drained you can no longer use a feat you no longer qualify for.

You need to qualify for the feat first in some way.

Yes, but it isn't meaningful necessarily. For example, a character (say a prince) can easily claim he was wearing his father's headband of +2 Int while growing up. Not now anymore, of course, but he already has Combat Expertise by now. "Temporarily" qualifying for a feat is pretty lame, I think; that leaves room open for emulating class features and the like.

Just to clarify, I don't like such a slippery slope; I'm primarily playing devil's advocate. At least in my case, in a few levels the character is the same regardless of the order in which powers/feats are acquired, so no harm done :)

unless he had the headband at the start of game, then no he does not qualify.

I think it's SDF's call in the end. But I believe the major argument is when you create a character that is already, for example, 10th level. When you create his feat selection, allowing taking feats before prerequisites are met opens up a lot of possibilities that most find inappropriate.

Anyway, that's my read, not my call.

Regards,

DW

How are your current twin games going? I would pop in and see how they are doing myself, but I don't want to "read ahead" in case MOG picks it up again if and when he returns.

Putting myself up for consideration, even though I'm fairly new to the boards as well. I took some APG options, such as the armored coat, the Hero's Fortune hero-point feat, and the Fate subdomain. I was pleasantly surprised by the World Traveler trait in the APG, so I hope you don't mind that I've built him up as such.

Two quick questions:

Spoiler:

1)Luca, being a Varisian, took Varisian as a bonus language. I don't think there will be many, if any, Varisians in the Mwangi Expanse besides those who are on the Jenivere, so it's mostly just flavor-- I kind of dislike that a common fighter from, say, Osirion, wouldn't know Osiriani unless he was Int 12. It's a common houserule I use that accidentally worked its way into my character. Is this alright?

In addition to that, I statted him up as being 42, which would put him at the middle age age category, but I decided against stat modifications because I think it feels cheesy. Is this okay, or should I rein back Luca's age until he's, say, 34 years old?

Man you guys posted a lot while I was asleep.

They're going good, both groups are on the 4th floor of the tower. Since one of the KM games has slowed down because Ox and dathom/lucasz seem to have died I'm not too worried about being overwhelmed when I start up Serpent's Skull.

I would prefer Maxime just spend her feats on something else, then get the lesser, beast totem at second level. I don't think you would be disappointed with Dodge and Power Attack at level 1.

Some feats have prerequisites. Your character must have the indicated ability score, class feature, feat, skill, base attack bonus, or other quality designated in order to select or use that feat. A character can gain a feat at the same level at which he gains the prerequisite.

Knew I saw that somewhere.

Wwweeellll, I think I'm going to spend today figuring out the groups.

Can one infer from that statement that you have picked those who have been successful then?

As I've mentioned a long time ago, the concept is loosely based on the Bene Gesserit of Frank Herbert's Dune.

That said, I always saw the concept as either mixing monk with inquisitor or monk with bard.

Mechanically, the former is stronger. Dunelly, it's the latter.

All this to say, I could flip the attributes and flip it into a monk/bard easily. I say this because there is a few solid inquisitor proposals and no bard's. I wanted to open this option (at first, I wanted to make a second proposal, but there is a lot of good ones out there and I felt a bit bad about it).

Who's gonna sign the praises of the fallen heroes, if not me?

Good luck with the choosing.

DW

A bard monk? What a cool concept, I honestly never considered such a build.

Edit: Profile updated with legal feats and added hero points

Basically looking over all the applications (there's almost 20) trying to figure out what will work best for the two groups.

If there's anyone else looking to DM a game with similar conditions I have a feeling there might be some willing players...

After looking over the AGP I am thinking I will go with a Skirmisher Ranger with twohanded weapon combat style with blackleaf in place of Barbarian. Background be the same, just class would change.

RPG Superstar 2011 Top 4

Well that was an interesting ordeal. Like I said, nearly twenty people wanted to join the fun! I've decided to change my original idea to accommodate a few more people. In order to help incorporate the interesting characters I wanted, as well as a good party dynamic. So there will be two groups of 5-players.

Drum Roll

::Team Chimera::
Vincenzo De Luca - Cleric of Desna (Ice Titan)
Rhys Forgarson - Ranger (Reycied)
Halsanna - Crossbowoman Fighter (Me'mori)
Tragershen - Wizard (markofbane)
Blackleaf - Barbarian/Ranger? (seekerofshadowlight)

and

::Team Girallon::
Quariel - Wizard (Vi-hatarn)
Tania Teg - Monk (Dreaming Warforged)
Tark'kanas - Ranger (Javell DeLeon)
Fi'Vannali - Rogue (Jaycen)
Eranla - Cleric (Chris Kenney)

I'll create the OOC Threads for these so we can finalize character concepts and get started. I'm on break so probably see those within the hour.

My deepest apologies for those not accepted. If I could I would run a game for each and every one of you. I'm sure that others will see how much interest there is in Serpent's Skull and begin creating PBPs for it as well. The good news is you'll have characters ready for that! I'm poking Tikael trying to get him to start a game too since we can share resources :P

A pity :) - best of fun to the chosen ones! May we clash dice in the future ;)

...I'll keep my eyes posted for Tikael

Indeed, congratulations to those who have been accepted!

Congratulations for those who were accepted and good luck with your games SdF. I'll keep an eye out for Tikael as well or any others doing serpent skull. SdF also please consider Calinder as an alternate if things don't go according to plan.

Neato. I'll keep my eyes peeled for the respective threads, then.

The next time I run a game, I'm just going to look through all the closed threads and drop a linelink towards my ad. (Alkenstar Legends, summer '11)

The Exchange

Thank you for the consideration. Post well and often.

I got a giggle out of your naming your character Black Leaf.

"Black Leaf, noooooo!!!"

I'm surprised he's not a rogue. Also you forgot to follow it with the "hrrr-rrkkk" of her hanging herself.

Oh, come on. Spoil sport. Once I saw we were in the same group, I was saving that line for a special occasion.

I had never heard of the blackleaf thing when I made that avatar.

The teams look pretty balanced. Very much looking forward it it.

Team Chimera

Team Girallon

I'd make disparaging comments about being named after a six-limbed creature, but we've got three heads, and this isn't a race, soooo.. ^^;

Besides, I'm curious to see how the Monk/Inquisitor works out.

RPG Superstar 2011 Top 4

Thanks for the links! Was just getting ready to do that.

I'm curious if he decide to do that or monk/bard. both could be very interesting, especially with the new bard options.

Bummer indeed, since I was the one that started the first post requesting it. (and had a non-human)...

Oh well...

Oooo that sounds fun...

Heads up guys. Considering the count is at about 20, SdF says, here's another chance to get five of you into the running.

AK's Serpent Skull

I might be late on posting this, but then again, I'm sure most of you have your eyes open.

Just thought I woukld say I am reading SDF's Serpent Skull (Chimera) thread and enjoying it immensely.

Yeah, we got a great group of players and fun characters. SdF always does an excellent job running.
