Silver Crusade

Troy was a poor movie.

I suggest any of the Kurosawa samurai films. Seven Samurai is up there but any of the following would be a fine addition to the list.

Rashomon
Yojimbo
Ran
Throne of Blood
Hidden Fortress
Kagemusha

I like the list either way, but in regards to robin hood, I would say neither. I thought the new one was pretty bad, even though I saw it for a 1.50, and the kevin costner one was a bit too light for me, plus kevin coster with his cali accent in medieval england just makes me wince.

Clash of the Titans- I say original, curly hair and all...the remake, while visually appealling, I heard was pretty bad, although I can't say for sure since I didn't see it. I would rather see Jason and the Argonauts instead.

+1 million, and not just for the tastefully named protagonist! :)

Liberty's Edge

Ummm, check my name above. :)

One of my favorite modern/classical fantasy pieces. (I think I saw it close to 12 times in the theatre.)

I just watched the Costner Robin Hood on tv the other day.
Yea, Costner's got the worst dissappearing accent and is so-so,
But Alan Rickman is at his absolute scene chewing best as the sheriff of Notingham..."No more table scraps for the poor and cancel Christmas!"

By the way is this strictly Theatrical movies? There's been a few on Sci-fi and a few other channels that are low budget but surprisingly good...or are we going for sheer Icons of film?

Also we seem to be aiming strictly for teen to adult...when you go to animation, Disney's Aladdin was a bloodless but great fantasy. And the 70's animated Hobbit was also great...if you are old enough to remember them.

Just an aside; my vote for best Sword and Sorcery comic is
the original run of Mike Grell's Warlord back in the 70's and early 80's. Anyone else used to read those?

I think childern's is probably fine, but not animation (he specifically said live action). Otherwise there are several amazing anime series out there that pretty well blow any other fantasy movies I've seen out of the water (Record of Lodoss War, anyone?).

Fantasic Series absolutely loved it. If you are looking for a series with a much more light hearted approach you would probably like Rune Soldier. Done by the same producers of Lodoss War.

If Pirates qualifies then the Richard Lester Directed "3 Musketeers" and "4 Musketeers" should also...if only for some of the most wonderfully staged swordfights in cinematic History.

As for movies Firmly in the Period..how dare you miss out Errol Flynn in"The Adventures of Robin Hood"

'Underworld: Rise of the Lycans'
'Dragonheart'
'Brotherhood of The Wolf'
'Outlander'
'Pathfinder'
'Solomon Kane'
'Clash of the Titans'
'Excalibur'
'Van Helsing'
'Sauna'
'Sleepy Hollow'
'Willow'
'Stardust'

I'd have to agree that the Ray Harryhausen version of Jason and the Argonauts trumps most other 'Greek myth' movies as a gamer movie. It features party roles, teamwork in combat, NPC's who switch sides, a great cast of monsters with a variety of vulnerabilities...just so many ways it matches with a campaign. While both Clash of the Titans are decent movies (I favor the Harryhausen one, obviously), Jason and the Argonauts just has a better tabletop feel, and thus I would consider it more essential to a gamer's movie list.
