So, because of the light snow we had last night, and the road problems it caused on the way home, my wife wanted to ride with me today to work. Normally, we ride separately on Friday, I get in for 0600 and can leave early to go run errands.

So, I said yes and waited for her. We got in at 0700 - just an hour later and not too much of an impact, since she actually needed 1/2 hour less time than I did to make 80 hrs. We could leave when I was done - 1300.

She calls me up about 1240 and says - oh we have to stay because I've got this thing that needs getting done and the other guy is out of the office (as usual) so I have to stay and do it.

So, now I have to sit here and wait for her. All the while, the sun has come out today and melted what little snow was left on the ground, making the roads no more dangerous than usual.

And, I had originally planned (when we were driving separate) to spend part of the afternoon shopping for something for my wife for Christmas. Now, however, I won't have time to peruse the mall for something - so, it looks like I'm going to have to fall back on gift cards, which I hate doing.

Well you could always go peruse the mall until she is done with work.

Sadly, the closest mall that I know of is a bit too far away from work. All we've got close by is stuff like Target, Best Buy, Linen's and Things, Lowes, and Ikea. I will probably end up at the Best Buy near our house eventually, since one of the gift cards I was going to get her is i-tunes, but since the other gift card I was planning is Barnes and Noble, it makes more sense to wait and go to the BB near our house, which is right near a B&N.

Not at all. Bubble it up to the principal, then the board if necessary.

Spoiler:
So we participated in an autism study a while back as a way of getting some testing done that we couldn't otherwise afford. So far, so good. So we wait for flipping ever to get the results back. Somehow 4-6 weeks turned into 7 weeks. Meanwhile the kidlet is melting down at school and we all need a little direction as far as treatment goes. So the results finally get here today. Based on their testing they think that high functioning autism is a more appropriate diagnosis than Asperger's. Okay, I can see that. It can be kinda hard to find the line between them. And treatment options are pretty similar. So I get to the end of the report where they were supposed to include information on care providers, support groups, etc, and all there is is a reading list. A short one. Not one single helpful suggestion in the whole damn report. *hits head on wall* So now that they totally didn't live up to their promises, I get to go back to trying to track down resources and somehow we have to try and scrape up the money for an appointment with the kidlet's psychologist because he is currently so far gone he can't function in the classroom and we need ideas. Also we need an aide in his classroom who has some fricking clue how to deal with an autistic child, but that's a whole other fight. Yes, he looks normal, he acts normalish sometimes, but why can they not get the clue that he is not a normal child?! Aargh! It's a good thing he has a couple weeks off of school now. I need the break. :/

I'm sorry, Lord President Moorluck, but we may need to have a new election for the Presidency of FAWLTy.

See, there's this chap from Serbia that has taken the title of Ultimate Man and, to keep our cred as being the most-badass group of gamers in the world, I feel we have to nominate him for presidency.

But, we're going to let you run against him and remember, the rules for generating votes are the same as always: hookers & blow are perfectly acceptable bribes.

Although, I'm not sure why anyone would need to have plastic molds injected into them. It sounds uncomfortable. :p

I'm so sorry for your family's struggles, lynora. Our family has its own challenges, but I don't know how I'd handle things in your position. I wish I had some good contacts or something I could offer to help. The best I can do is let you know that, like the other FAWTLies, I'm here when you feel the need to rant. If I do happen to run across something that might help, I'll let you know.

Spoiler:
in my semi-professional opinion(I don't deal with people who are autistic on a regular basis), you might be caught in the grinder of Asperger's being re-examined and re-defined. I'm going through that right now with my job and the controversy over Bipolar disorder being overdiagnosed. In terms of options, unfortunately I don't know of many- it's just not my field. As ever, I will look around and see if anything pops up. In terms of school, I'd say an aide that has working knowledge of autistic kids is your best bet- they might be able to link you up to other places that could offer support.

My almost-16 year old niece has Asperger's. Unfortunately, my sis-in-law refused to get her treatment and 'tried' to deal with it at home. I never really saw much effort on her part to address it. End result teenage hormones + Aspergers = bad. Kudos for fighting to get real help on that front. Does your school district have assistants trained in this? My wife is a teacher's asst for Title I students, but other assts are actually trained in this care.

Oh we are most definitely caught in that as yet undefined area of the spectrum. And definitions are changing regularly. It can make finding information very frustrating. But at least studies like this one are helping define things for those dealing with these things further down the line. It just doesn't help us much now. As for finding an aide who is knowledgeable about autism in the public school system....well, I'm trying to come up with an adequate comparison. Ah, yes, I know. It's like trying to find a straw in a stack of needles. Without a magnet. Or gloves. And you can't just immerse it all in water and see what floats.

Yeah, the thought of not treating it...<shudder> Poor kid. :(

As for finding a teaching aide who knows how to deal with autism, well, it's not worked out so far. But we're going to get very irritating shortly. At least until they provide what it clearly states in his IEP he needs in order to function in a classroom. I'm not really holding my breath. Part of the problem is just the sheer lack of people who are trained to deal with autism.

If you are going with gift cards, would you have the option of going to a grocery store? Sounds tacky, I know, but the stores in my area have little kiosks with lots of different card options...including ones from other retailers.
