I've been receiving the Kingmaker books since they started coming out, as a birthday present from a friend (and partially funded by my wife). Sooner or later, I will start DM'ing this.
I understand there are also PDF copies available for download. Am I correct in assuming that my friend is the only one able to download these? Are they marked in any way that they cannot be transferred? That is, can I use his account to download them, shift them to a memory stick and move them to my PC?

If someone gets a Pathfinder AP for a friend as a gift, and then gives that person the hard copy and the PDF, that's fine. Technically, the gift giver should probably delete the PDF from his/her computer once the file's been transferred over to the lucky recipient of the gift.
We don't have copy protection on them beyond the watermarks and all that. If a file ends up on a torrent site or publicly posted or otherwise mass-distributed, we can tell who that file came from.
But we have no problem at all with the concept of someone giving a friend a hardcopy/PDF combo as a gift. (Again, just as you give up the hard copy when you give it away, you should do the same with the PDF is all.)
