Would it be possible to for cavaliers and rangers to take something other than an animal as an animal companion. I'd think so.
The Hippogriff comes to mind, because of their link to the Sable Company Marines. I could also see a cavalier gaining the aid of a dragon, if only for a short time. Ofcourse, the cavalier would have to give up his mount. (Temporarily, he may get it back at a later point when the dragon would leave the party)
