Working some ideas in my head for a rock-solid new campaign but have been too swamped at work to get my head around anything firm. Came across a blog months ago that involved beginning a campaign with a "petrification" event, and was hoping to get the creative replies flowing. Here's what I've got so far that the party would know when creating characters, but it's not set in stone:
- Campaign begins with party being restored following petrification
- Looking at centuries having passed since event
- Party was petrified in battle against enemies that may still exist
- I have one pre-fab adventure I plan on running for sure (for lvls 10-12, remake of Lost Caverns of Tsojcanth for you old school gamers), and have considered linking events from that time to the petrification.
Ideas to expand? Hooks for characters?

It would seem like the biggest theme for you to play up with the campaign would be all the time that's past for PCs. If your campaign world is establihed you can get away with just changing a few things that have been established in game previously, like changing alliances and shifting the balance of power between nations. If it's a new game world, I'd suggest having it have been a fairly standard game world when the PCs where petrified and then throwing in uncommon or alien elements into the world. You could make races like Orcs, Goblinoids, or Drow part of the world politics, not just threats and make the PCs former enemies allies to their country. Have the rise of a new and opposing pantheon of gods. You can throw in elements from progressive game settings like Firearms from the Iron Kingdoms and/or Lightning Rails and Airships from Eberron. You can even do things like create new races, have access to other worlds, or other different ideas.

Crossed my mind to run a Dark Sun campaign, except the party wouldn't know it when creating characters because my campaign guide description would be of a lush world.
Course, in doing so, I cut out some of the fun Dark Sun races, possibly introduce an eradicated race, and would have to really find out if there's an updated psionics supplement out there balanced for Pathfinder (still have my 2nd edition psionics book from high school days...)
