Yeah, B-movie giant monsters (Black Scorpion, Them!, Deadly Mantis, Valley of Gwangi, et al) + Willis O'Brien, Harryhausen, pulp fantasy (HPL, Howard, + others) = formative influence in the creation of D&D/AD&D.
IMO of course.
I wish more fantasy gamers would give some of that old sci-fi fare a chance and try to incorporate it into their games. Them! for example would be an excellent set up for a powerful unknown menace threatening a kingdom or even just a smaller scale one-off scenario where a nest of giant ants is slowly cutting off the traffic to a small town in preparation for a final assault.
The giant ant entry is perfect for this with the variants and option presented. I would probably up-size them all one category but I know you guys were using prev edition versions of smaller giant ants as a baseline for influence.
Good work on the book btw, for all my complaining it was well worth the wait.
There is a goldmine of small things that can be expanded upon in the book.
Oh yeah, nice touch "or simply the Deadly Mantis", very cool.
