Almost 200 years ago, when the land that was to become Nirmathas was still a vassal of the empire of Cheliax, the northern reaches of the Fangwood were a wild and untamed place. The crusades that laid low the Whispering Tyrant to the north were a distant memory, and those who remained were intent upon keeping the orcs of Belkzen and the remaining undead from Ustalav in check. As a result, the great forest was full of danger, from marauding orcs to deadly predators,
making it unsafe for merchants hoping to trade with the growing community of Skelt in the foothills of the Mindspin Mountains to the west.
Ekat Kassen was a crusader and fortune seeker who came to serve Lastwall in the year 4515 AR While he fought with distinction, he soon realized that he wanted more from life and lef the Lastwall military to find his fortune elsewhere. His travels took him all over the region around
Lake Encarthan, and he decided to settle down in 4522 AR atfer a very profitable adventure. Using a sizable portion of his fortune, he set out to tame a small area of the Fangwood on the banks of the Tourondel River, making it a natural stopover for those traveling up and down the river to Skelt. For the next 10 years, the town, which was then known as Kassen’s Hold, grew and prospered.
All that changed when Asar Vergas came to Kassen’s Hold with a host of mercenaries under his command. Asar was an old companion of Ekat, and the two had traveled together for some time before splitting up just afer Ekat’s last adventure. Over the years, Asar became sure that Ekat
had cheated him afer that adventure. Promising great wealth to his mercenaries, Asar raided the town relentlessly for 2 months. Finally, the townsfolk managed to locate Asar’s camp in an ancient crypt deep in the forest, and Ekat himself went out to deal with his old companion.
The battle was terribly bloody, with only a few townsfolk coming back to tell the tale. In the end, Asar was slain and his mercenaries scattered, but Ekat suffered a mortal wound. He died 2 days later, on the 11th day of Neth, 4535.
In honor of their beloved founder, the townsfolk buried Kassen in the ancient crypt, interring his bones in a place of honor, above the simple sarcophagi used to inter Asar, his mercenaries, and the townsfolk that lost their lives in the bitter struggle. They placed an eternal fame above
Kassen’s final resting place, so that all who visited might find warmth in the wilderness.
300 years later, Kassen's Hold is now simply known as Kassen and is a small town ruled by Mayor Uptal, a fair, but mildly grim man. While most of the “townsfolk” actually live in small homes or camps in the woods and fields surrounding Kassen proper, the town is quite tight-knit. As with most of the folk in Nirmathas, they stand up for one another and refuse to be pushed around.
In the tradition of it's adventurer founder, Kassen has had a lion's share of fortune seekers born out this modest frontier trade town. The passage of goods from the rives coming down from the Mindspin Mountains and Southward to Skelt fill the coffers of far more residents of Kassen than dragon's hoards and treasures necromancer's tombs. Never the less, it is the adventurers of Kassen that bring it it's fame. A select few a retired treasure seekers fill there time teaching a hand picked selection of the village's youth their trade. In return for their training, these fortunate youths perform various tasks for their teachers, most of which involves drudgery of some sort. At the age of 10 you were picked by the village council to be trained to be a fortune seeker and brave protector of your community in honor of Ekat Kassen himself.
The eternal flame burns yet at Kassen's tomb and in it's honor the villagers light a lantern from its flame to signal the end of their harvest season each year. On most years, Mayor Uptal and the village council journey to the Crypt of the Everflame and return in a processional bearing a piece of Kassen's Everflame to burn in the city's hall throughout the winter. Once every 10 years, however, Kassen graduates a new crop of young adventurers and inducts another set of lucky souls into it's super elite program. As a final test of their training, these young graduates are given the honor of bearing the cermonial lantern the the Crypt of the Everflame and enter to reach Kassen's Tomb and light their lantern from the Everflame itself and return home victorious and be deemed ready to venture out into the world.
This year, you bear this honor. It has been 8 years of drudgery and hard, menial work with about 2 years of invaluable training sprinkled in amongst the pot, pans, and horse stalls. In less than a fort-nite, you and three other young adventurers will venture off to bring home the flame. Ahead of you lies a lifetime (be it long or short) of adventure and purported riches, with this one last task to prove your worth and your honor to your village.
Lianth of Mist Lake

Please submit a 100 word character concept below. Include a physical description, personality details, notable points in your characters history, and their disposition regarding their selection as an adventurer of Kassen and the training of the past 10 years.
In 100 words? Crikey! Here's an attempt;
Born to dark-eyed and black-haired woodworkers, Lianis was called ‘changeling child’ with her pale freckled skin, red hair and blue eyes. She discovered her divine gifts attempting to heal her dog, who had been her one true friend.
Trained by the ‘Witch of Mist Lake,’ she learned the arts of the druid, to respect the living world, to forage for food, to cure hides and carve bone, to sustain growing things, and to safely use fire to clear away harmful growth.
With a wolf cub as companion, Lianis seeks to prove herself.
Here's the haiku version;
Lianis, druid,
Born an outcast, ‘changeling child,’
Seeks to prove herself.

Having lost his mother in childbirth and his father not long after, it seems almost appropriate that the solitary young half-elf boy named Hector would be trained as a hunter. Trained by a hunter by the name of Galnar, Hector Belaric has learned to live with nature, killing only for food or for defence. He has learned to hunt, and to respect the natural world, but also to fight; his training mostly focusing on goblins and the like.
Hector is a very good archer, is rather nimble and is fairly good at sneaking around. Also, having been trained to live in the wilderness, he is good at reaching places that others might not be able to.

Me? My dad wanted me to be the best. Now I am. I can out fight any of the boys in town and most of the men too. I will admit to being a bit of the bully in the past but I don't like it when people try to push me around. Generally if you are good to me, I'll be good to you.
That thing? That's Smasher, my Earth Breaker. No one expects a little thing like me to carry such a massive weapon. It puts them off guard. Nobody makes that mistake twice though.
I just have a few things left to pack for my first big adventure and then I'm ready to go!

Thorvin Firemane
Class: RangerSorry, a bit longer than the 100 words!
Unlike his underground brethren, Thorvin became enamored with the outdoors. As soon as he became of age, he left his home in Janderhoff to seek adventure east of the Mindspin Mountains. He wandered into the forest of Nirmathas where he spent several years as a hermit, living off the land and enjoying his own company. As time went on, he began to crave adventure and always wishing to help others in need, he traveled north to Kassen where he settled just outside in a small hut. He has found a living working as a river guide and also for the local Woodcutters guild, but still longing to eventually travel the world and seek adventure as an explorer. The leadership of Kassen recognized his skills as a woodsman and as a combatant and so he was chosen as an adventurer to represent the hamlet to his humble appreciation.
Thorvin wears traditional woodsmen garb; a brown-colored cloak stained with mud and dirt at the bottom and slightly tattered; a belt containing a variety of pouches which hold tea leaves, herbs, pipeweed, and other assorted paraphernalia. A strap runs down his torso which holds his bow across his back, and he wears weathered brown boots which have held up considerably despite their heavy use. His face is covered in a thick but well kept dirty-blonde beard. At rest, one is hard pressed to not see him carrying a pipe in his mouth, laughing jovially. Thorvin's Character Sheet

Hmm. I just realised he spoke up for the bard first (if in a different thread). Depending on if he's after dual wield or archery (I'm planning on archery), I don't mind changing class to something else. That said, a party made almost exclusively of nature-based characters could be somewhat interesting...

A Ranger isn't terribly far from counting as a skillmonkey, particularly if he uses his Favored Class bonus for yet another skill point. It would be interesting to see both the d10 HD and skillmonkey roles filled by Rangers. :)
And to complete the nature theme, we'd just need an elemental or fey sorcerer!

I'm interested, magic users are my game.
Sorcerer can be filled by me, don't know the bloodline yet.Let me know if you need anything else.
Namaste
I am currently considering Lianth for the divine caster slot. I am considering, Thorvin, Hector, and Vallindra for the warrior slot. I am also considering Thorvin and Hector for the skill based slot. I currently have no submissions for the arcane caster slot.
Plent of time and room to get a submission in. Create an alias with character portrait for your character and use the alias' profile as your character sheet. Then post on this board with a 100 word character description/background. This Tuesday I will select characters. Stay tuned!
| Narsel Fachey |
I would like to submit my evoker Narsel Fachey.
As a son of a succesfull travelling merchant Narsel had no opportunity to go to school anywhere, since he would often leave the place after a couple of weeks. Therefore he has been trained and educated in the basics of magic by his father who was a minor wizard. He quickly took to the art, and at the age of 7 he was able to change the color of his hair with a simple cantrip his father had taught him.
When he was 8 years old his father was visiting the small town of Kassen, as much to sell spices as to look in on his dear old friend and mentor Nathaus Stakeim. After a month in Kassen, Narsels father had to leave on an urgent trip as one of his offices had been robed.
Nathaus was impressed with Narsels skills with magic and offered to watch out for Narsel as his father took care of his bussines, and after that he could come back and pick up Narsel again.
As Narsel would probably have been a liability on this trip, and since he seemed to be so interesseted in Nathaus strange magical things Narsels father agreed.
A couple of months later Narsel and Nathaus received a letter explaining that Narsels father had been killed by highway men. Nathaus took him in and raised him as his old son. When Narsel was old enough he became the apprentice of Nathaus, just like his fahter was before him.
Narsel impressed everyone with the rate of wich he was learning. So much that when he was 10 he was selected by the city council to become a fortune seeker in honor of Ekat Kassen.
Carrion Hawthorne
|
My arcane submission:
Carrion was born to peasants and learned early in life that, no matter the task, circumstances always worked out well for him. When a fire engulfed his home at the age of 6, it was miraculous that Carrion survived; his parents and livestock weren't so lucky. To Carrion, such was their fate, their strings having been cut according to a design too intricate to imagine.
Alone and on the streets, Carrion left it to his fate that he would be cared for; he was interred into an orphanage for a short time, then a wealthy family visited and were taken with him. Carrion knew that this was the natural course of his life and never despaired, even in the darkest of times. Carrion's adopted family, the Hawthorne's, took him to Kassen soon after, to live and be educated. It is the Hawthorne's greatest wish that Carrion become the man they see, to take his destiny and embrace it, to whatever end it may be. The tale of Kassen was told repeatedly to Carrion, to inspire him, so they said. Carrion examined the stories he heard, not fully believing hearsay. He had heard of the specific individuals that could find the crypt of Kassen himself, to find the truth and understand how this ties into his destiny.
After diligently diving into his powers, many of which protected him, Carrion came away with a new understanding, perhaps he could accelerate his destiny, the Hawthorne's (Dennis and Deidra) gave him full support (the best teachers and guidance) and access to much of their library. His hard work was noticed by the village council, he was elected to be part of the destined few to enter Kassen's crypt; all is going according to the grand design, a design Carrion looks to, one day, being able to alter at his whim.
| Moog |
Please submit a 100 word character concept below. Include a physical description, personality details, notable points in your characters history, and their disposition regarding their selection as an adventurer of Kassen and the training of the past 10 years.
When the village council found Moog, they found a naive, cowardly, humble, half-orc begging on the streets. From his many fresh wounds, it was obviously he had seen worse days.
In the years that have passed, Moog has gained more confidence and assertiveness while developing his arcane aptitude in the sorcerous arts under the guidance of the council. His mixed heritage and unusual allure to the element of water has left many unanswered questions in his mind. Easily confused though, (gaining him the name "Moog the Confused" in his earlier years), the village council is still uncertain if all their efforts in training him have been for naught. Only time will tell.

I have three submissions and would be enthusiastic to play as any of them in your campaign. Please follow the links for a character sheet and picture. (The first character was created with a class from Adamant Entertainment's Pathfinder Compatible The Tome of Secrets. It is essentially a cleric that trades armor and weapon proficiencies and a lower hit die for extra spell slots and skill points.)
Nicolai Shukhov
LG Human Priest 1Coming from a line of successful barristers, Nicolai learned early that knowledge is power. Attending the finest academies, he made great success. Scholarly life, however, did little to prepare him for the harsh nature of the physical world. An encounter with bandits in a secluded alley left him battered and pondering his limitations. Fate intervened in a kind passerby, an evangelist of Iomedae who tended his wounds and taught him faith. Nicolai learned that science gives man knowledge, which is power; but religion gives man wisdom, which is control. Now a priest of Iomedae, he brings light and judgment to the unrepentant.
Shortform: Divine crusader and knowledge vault.
Virgil Longstreet
LE Human Fighter 1Virgil is not a nice person. People would say ambitious, focused, determined, and maybe even polite. But never nice. Part human and part something else, he experienced a childhood marked by adversity and opposition. Taking to the sword, he used his physical talent to forge his body and mind into a disciplined student of combat. Virgil firmly believes that misfortune comes only to those not strong enough to resist. Likewise, those not strong enough to grasp their own fortune do not deserve pity or assistance. Virgil now seeks perfection through mastery of the sword, mastery of himself, and mastery of the world.
Shortform: Swordsman and athlete.
Yelena Lazenkova
LN Human Fighter 1Yelena escaped an abusive childhood though enlistment. Finding solace in the ordered regimentation and camaraderie of military service, she flourished. Her natural dexterity and lithe form earned her a placement in the marksman corps of her battalion. After discharge, Yelena found transition to civilian life uncomfortable. One violent incident with a tavern drunk later, she found herself on the run from the very forces she had served. She now makes her living as a mercenary. She prefers jobs that serve honorable purposes, but she realizes that she cannot be too picky and only turns down those that are overtly immoral.
Shortform: Long-range combat and reconnaissance.

Many, many thanks to all who have taken the time to submit a character concept. It was a less than easy decision, but I have come around to my four choices. If the players are still available I would like to use the following four characters, listed in no particular order.
1. Virgil Longstreet Human Fighter
2. Thorvin Firemane Dwarven Ranger
3. Lianth of Mist Lake Human Druid
4. Carrion Hawthorne Human Sorcerer
Congratulations! I ask that the four of you finish off your character sheets and pick two character traits, if you have yet to done so. They can be found here: Character Traits Web Enhancemnet as a free download. Please select no more than one trait from each category and no more than two total. If you have any questions, please ask. Also, do not give yourself starting gold or purchase starting equipment. Place all character sheet information in your profile. Here is an example of a character I am running in another game... Character Sheet Expample
After doing so, just chime in below to let us know all four of you are with us and I'll put up a link to what will be our normal game thread tonight with the introduction.

"As fate would have it, I am continuing on."
I'll remove the equipment and gold, equipment will be what I plan on collecting, to cover all bases.
Carrion Hawthorne

Have 2 magic traits, they fit. Would I still need to drop one for another type of trait?
Carrion Hawthorne

Nothing else really fits, as far as traits. I'll find the closest approximation.
EDIT: Traits of different classifications complete

Tanner, your site for online character record keeping is really nifty, BTW. If it wasn't that the character sheet in the alias method wasn't so darn handy while playing on these boards, I would definitely use it and will use it for record keeping for my tabletop game.

Lianth meets regularly with her mentor, Olimira Treesong "The Witch of Mist Lake", in a secret grove North of the village.
Is this NPC male or female? I wrote up her mentor as a 1/2 Elf named Ambrosius Byrne, but am fine with that being swapped out for a pre-existing NPC in the town.
If Olimara is a woman, it will certainly make the bit about having a sexual relationship with her mentor a bit spicier. :)
Only she's really old and wrinkly, in which case it's oogy...

I absolutely love them. When the new Pathfinder core rulebook came out, I was one of several volunteers who helped update the SRD website. The character sheet site is hosted on that site. Anyone can create a profile. You can just post a hyperlink so anyone can view a public page of your character.

I will leave that choice up to you. If you would like to continue with the male mentor mentioned it will not be difficult. If you would like to use the female NPC I have provided that would be fine. If you'd like to have had same sex relations with with this NPC, that is fine too.
And, yes, there is a thread started for the actual game that I put up this morning. I was going to direct all of you that way tonight... Set does his homework though. Thanks.

I'll go with the female NPC, for ease of using whatever material is in the adventure about her. But I think I'll skip the hawt girl-on-girl action. I'm not feeling like 'going there' at the moment. :)
Should we start up in the play thread?
