As did I. I have a good Wisdom score, too! <D

Master Grachius, is there something wrong with your meal? You seem to be upset.

Nameless GM wrote:
I'm fine with using a Tiefling, and you definitely don't have to pay anything more, I feel that Tieflings are already pretty balanced, and even though they do have a few extra abilities, I don't think it's anything unbalancing. I'm fine with this. The variant you chose sounds cool and thematic to me, so I'm fine with it. As for physical appearance, I'm not going to limit you in any way. Feel free to write what you wish, you're not even limited to that chart as long as it makes sense!

Okay, so that means I still have a starting feat to choose for her, which will help. I'll also revise her description to reflect her Barbed Devil heritage.

Nameless GM wrote:
As for the Hamatulatsu, I agree that the original feat is a bit too powerful, but splitting it into three feats makes it seem too costly. I like the middle ground option, where the feat progresses as you level. Seems reasonable to me.

Okay. This feat won't be available to her until second level anyway, so we have a bit of time to work out the specifics. Sometime soon, in the next week or so, I'll post the "middle ground" proposal for us to iterate from.

Nameless GM wrote:
As for how to integrate your character... All I need is for you to explain why she would be walking the street in the late evening, near Westcrown's curfew. Perhaps she's late coming home from work, or 'temple.' Also, if you could provide me a quick background summary and her alignment, that would be much obliged! I should be able to tie you in over the weekend if you can provide me with this.

Many apologies. I had a busy weekend and didn't see your response until just now. I'm going to presume that she is now living at a Westcrown branch of the Sisters of the Golden Erinyes monastic order. So, instead of returning home from 'temple', let's say that she is returning to the temple from an errand that took rather too long, leaving her in danger of being on the streets after curfew.

Here is a background summary, distilled from what I've already previously said. She was the child of some unknown, to her, Chelish noble house. Her mother, upon seeing the Infernal heritage obvious from the newborn infant's hideous face and disfigured body, knew that her daughter would be killed once the lord of the house returned from the trip he was on. So, the mother had the midwife smuggle the poor babe away to be left on the doorstep of one of the Sisters of Golden Erinyes monasteries, after which they conspired to concoct a story and "evidence" indicating that the infant had died during childbirth.

The Devil Nuns raised the child along with the other orphans, training her in their secret martial arts, keeping a close watch on the rather "special" orphan in their midst. Loba has recently been fully ordained into the order, and the monastery's leaders have started giving her errands requiring that she go out into the world beyond the monastery's walls, a radical change from her previously completely sheltered life. Although they understand that there is significant danger in doing this, they also know that the young monk needs to start coming to terms with interacting in a world that may often be outright hostile to her obviously Infernal nature.

Nameless GM wrote:

I'll finish up rewriting the description of her appearance and any other preparations over the next couple of hours.

Loba:

Spoiler:
While performing your day's errands, you've lost track of time, and now the sun is setting and Westcrown's curfew bells are about to strike. Just as you are quickening your pace, you see a young boy, no older than twelve, round the bend up ahead, running as fast as he can. Unfortunately for him, he steps onto a cobblestone at the wrong angle and you hear a very audible snap as his foot turns in an incorrect direction.

The boy cries out in pain and crumbles to the ground. As tears begin to form at the corners of his eyes and he visiby tries to fight them back, he notices you walking the street, not difficult since you're the only one around.

"Please, ma'am. You gotta to help me! I need to be gettin' home before it's too late! Can you help me?" At this point, he tries to support his own weight, but shudders visibly from the pain and returns to the ground, grimacing.

GM:
The young boy wrote:

Loba, always cautious, takes in the scene, trying to determine whether the kid is faking his injury (Sense Motive: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (17) + 7 = 24) and whether there might be others lurking in the shadows waiting to ambush her as reward for a good deed (Perception: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (14) + 9 = 23).

I believe that my character edits are pretty much done, other than the physical description that I still owe (although it is implied in some of the current race description). Please tell me what you think.

Do note that I tweaked a few more things here and there; however, this was not done with any power-gamer motive but mostly to make things "fit". In particular, you should note where I modified the racial skill bonuses (Bluff & Stealth => Intimidate & Perception, given barbed devil fear and awareness abilities) and fiendish resistances (cold, electricity & fire => cold & acid) to make more sense based upon barbed devil stats.

Loba wrote:

Loba:

Spoiler:
The stats look fine!

Sense Motive Result: As far as you can tell, he is not faking the injury, he seems to be in severe pain.

Perception Result: You hear faint clanking, as though someone wearing armour is running. You're not sure how far away it is, however.

The boy continues to plead: "Please help me, it's just down this alley, not far at all!"

GM:
Nameless GM wrote:

Loba hesitates a moment longer, as if uncertain, then nods wordlessly from deep within her cowl. She strides over to where the boy sits on the ground, picks him up, and starts walking swiftly in the indicated direction.

Loba

Spoiler:
Supporting the boy, it doesn't take you long for him to start that the both of you move faster, and soon enough, you arrive at an old tavern, clearly not seeing much use these days. The boy bursts through the door and yells... see below

Loba, please describe your character to the rest of the players in your first post.

In the tavern, Janiven grows more and more tense as no news arrives, and finally begins clearing the table. Not long after, the door bursts open, revealing a teenage boy being supported by a tiefling woman. Janiven looks immediately concerned, and the boy yells "They've got Arael!"

Out of breath as he is, he begins coughing and trying to regain his breath.

Loba, make a Perception check. Everyone else can try as well, but you get a -4 penalty for being inside the tavern.

And now, we begin in earnest! :)

Male Tiefling Wizard 5

"What?" Zareth reaches down to his pack, where a small snake crawls out onto his arm as he picks the pack up. "Oh, and the Watch probably followed you here, didn't they? Janvian, is there a back entrance to the building?"

Perception, including the +2 from Alertness for having my familiar within 5 feet. 1d20 + 2 - 4 ⇒ (9) + 2 - 4 = 7

Male Halfling Paladin 1 {Init +0, Perception +4, HP 10/10}

Oh, my!

<Rushes over to ensure the boy is OK>

Heal check: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (18) + 2 = 20
Perception check: 1d20 + 4 - 4 ⇒ (2) + 4 - 4 = 2

Female Goblin Ranger 1

1d20 - 2 ⇒ (5) - 2 = 3 (counting the penalty)
Tenze brandishes her sword, ready to fight. "Excuse me, Miss Janiven, do be a good, polite woman and tell us what is going on."
She sneaks towards the door, staying to the side. She peeks out, if possible.
Stealth, not counting any abnormal modifiers like concealment: 1d20 + 20 ⇒ (1) + 20 = 21
Yes, I know my Stealth skill is really good. I'm going to go over it and make sure I didn't make some mistake. o.0
EDIT: Man, it's hard to believe, but it's true. Go goblin racial bonuses and small size!

Nameless GM wrote:

Perception: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (3) + 9 = 12. *sigh*

I'd like to beg all of your indulgence to allow me to (continue to) postpone a lengthier physical description until tomorrow evening. This week has been back-to-back 14-16 hour days, and I just can't spend the time until tomorrow evening.

Until then, though, I'd urge you to contemplate the possibilities from crossing a human with a barbed devil (p.72 of PFRPG Bestiary) in such a way that it results in a 5 Charisma score. Also, I should at least leave you with the following.

The figure escorting the boy through the tavern door is fully covered by robes died a drab dark burnt umber. Her face is mostly obscured in the shadows of a full cowl pulled low, but you can just make out that she is also wearing an even darker scarf tied across the bridge of her nose just below her eyes.

Grachius will unfurl his black cloak and put it on while sliding into the shadows near the closest secondary egress to the building whether it be window, backdoor, or firewood dropbox.

Stealth 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (18) + 7 = 25

I think the dice hate me.

Ben moves towards the door, noting that Tenze wants to hide. He tries to get to the door, not hiding at all, and tries to see who or what may be following the new arrivals.
"Were you followed?" he asks in the confusion.

Yeah, I know.

Camris:

Spoiler:
The boy appears to be fine aside from a broken ankle. You quickly tend the wound, wrapping it tightly, allowing the boy to limp. He'll still be slowed down, however.

The boy catches his breath, and continues: "Arael was taken by the dottari just an hour ago. The hellknights are trying to convince them to hand him over." He looks sheepishly at Benicio. "Yes, I think I might have been followed..."

Benicio:

Spoiler:
You hear the sound of clanking armor emanating from outside the tavern, as though a group of humanoids in full armor are running full-tilt here.

Janiven sees Grachius looking for another exit, and addresses him. "Unfortunately, this old tavern's exits are all boarded up. The only open windows lead out into the street, where the hellknights are fast approaching."

Janiven runs forward and bars the door to the tavern. Responding to Tenze's question, she replies, "I apologize, but I've no more idea than you. All I know is that the last thing I want is to be captured by a group of over-zealous devil worshipers."

At Zareth's question, she brightens. "There's no back door, but there is a passage in the cellar that leads into the city sewers. I think that's our best chance."

She begins moving towards a trapdoor located behind the bar. She opens it, and gestures. "Come! We need to get out of here!"

Female Goblin Ranger 1

Abandoning any attempt at stealth (mainly because she kept rolling 1s, Tenze leaps away from the door. She pauses by Camris. "Come on, Camris, we have to hurry!" She turns to the boy. "Boy, do you think you can manage without help?"

The boy puts on a brave face and grimaces in pain when he puts weight on his bad foot, but he nods slowly and limps towards the trap-door.

Rolling ones isn't so bad when you have a +19 mod, though. ;)

Good point. But with rolls of 20, I'm not quite invisible, so it's still dangerous for me.

Male Tiefling Wizard 5

"Going through the sewers? How... distasteful." Zareth pauses for a moment before moving to the trap door. "Still, better than letting the hellknights get a hold on you. Let's get going before they arrive, shall we?"

From beneath the cowl, Loba says her first words since entering the tavern. "It seems my good deed has placed me in an awkward spot, with curfew now fallen and Hellknights on their way." She tilts her head as if pondering for a moment (player fudges fumbling a Wisdom check). "I don't suppose you'd allow me to follow you through the sewers rather than having to stay behind and face potentially cruel questioning? I won't be a nuisance and can certainly take my leave of you once we've avoided this complication."

M Human Fighter 1

"We've got company! I heard armor coming this way, fast!"
Ben waves the others towards the trapdoor.

Male Chelaxian (Human) Bard 1

At Lady Janiven’s attention, Grachius’s shoulders un-hunch and his face slides into a relaxed smile. As her attention leaves Grachius, something hard and emotional gazes out of his eyes and a hand tightens briefly on his rapier. Before anyone can even attempt a double take, Grachius has a radiant grin he says, “Well, my lady… If we must leave this stage, perhaps a grand finale is in order.”

“Quickly everyone into the cellar!!!” Grachius orders as strides into the kitchen.

Spoiler:

After striding into the kitchen, Grachius grabs the first empty pot he lays hands on and begins using it to shovel burning wood and coals from the fireplace to anything in the room that looks like it could burn… While keeping an eye open for a bottle or jug of oil.

Perception 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (15) + 6 = 21

If he hears anything banging on the door, he’ll take a final scoop of burning coals and the oil, run to the exit to the cellar, toss the oil in front of the door and the last scoop of coals about the room, and finally dance down into the cellar… closing the door behind.

Perform (Dance) 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (11) + 7 = 18

Male Halfling Paladin 1 {Init +0, Perception +4, HP 10/10}

Camris provides whatever help he can to the boy so he can limp more quickly. He looks at Loba as he passes.

If you're in trouble too, then you need to come with us. I don't want to have your blood on my hands.

Tenze follows Camris.

M Human Fighter 1

Ben sheathes his weapon, and brings up the rear, watching the barred door.

Loba nods once and then silently follows Camris and the boy down into the cellar.

My thin rationale for having her follow is that Loba suspects, given that she's a Tiefling, she's unlikely to receive "fair" treatment from Hellknights during questioning. As I said earlier, as a player I'm kind of fudging a "failed Wisdom check" here, since it seems rather unlikely such a wise individual would follow fools she never met down into this cellar. In other words, I'm viciously skewering Loba on the GM's hook and dropping her into a villain-infested future. Poor, poor character...

Male Chelaxian (Human) Bard 1

I believe Ben and I are the last two in the building by the time the Hellknights begin banging on the door.

I come running out of the kitchen with a jug of oil and a pot of flaming hot coals. I throw the jug of oil in front of the door, scatter the coals about the room, then as the room begins to blaze I dance down the stairs with Ben close behind me.

Perform (Dance) 1d20 + 7 = (11) + 7 = 18

Standing tall with his chest puffed out and fists at his belt, Grachius announces: "Let us hurry to the next scene! I have an entrance to make!"

And yes he actually says it just like that.

Perform (Acting): 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (18) + 7 = 25

Hey guys,

I apologize profusely for this, but I just can't continue to run this PbP in the new year. My work schedule has grown too much and I just can't deal with it. I underestimated how much work running a PbP would be, and for that I apologize.

As for this game, I'd be sad to see it die, what with all the cool characters and such. Warforged Gardener, would you still be willing to take over for me? I know it's a lot to ask, but I do hope you guys can keep this one going, hopefully with a trustworthy GM who can actually keep things runny.

Once again, sorry everyone.

M Human Fighter 1

No worries. This isn't the first game I've played that got off to a great start, but didn't get too far due to real life's way of getting in the way. GM-ing takes a lot of time, and if you don't have it, you don't have it. I'm extremely impoverished at this time (got my worries, too!), or I'd offer to buy a module and GM something for all assembled.I wish you good luck with your family and work, NGM. The rest of you, too! :o) It was fun while it lasted, and that's good.

For hire: Brave, ugly fighter seeks adventure with likeminded dreamers. Armed to the teeth, little experience. Inquire at the nearest tavern.
