Unfortunately, no. There is not a way to exclude the backgrounds of the PDFs when printing (that I am aware of). We are not currently offering text-only versions of the PDFs.
That's too bad. That is a deal breaker for me for future possible PDF purchases.
Thanks for the quick reply, though.

It should be able to be done if the background is put on a deselectable layer...I agree, it is definitely a printer drain...
Paizo, please look into puttingthe background on a different layer which can be turned off...
That would be awesome and a great solution.
Thank you, Xaaon of Xen'Drik, for that.

This may not be what you had in mind, but until a better solution is available, try this: open the PDF in acrobat reader.Use the 'select' tool to highlight the text you want to print, then choose 'copy' from the 'edit' menu. Then open a word processor (I'm using OpenOffice Writer) and choose 'paste'. You can also copy&paste images, but then you have to arrange them on the page. So if you're wanting to print the core rulebook, it might be a lot of work! But if you just want copies of the player's guide for one of the adventure paths, then it's pretty easy.

There is a way to print only the text, but it involves third party software (free), and is borderline (at best) a violation of Paizo's intentions for PDF releases.
In other words, I won't explain how.

Another vote for layered PDF's!
I'm setting up a tabletop projector, so I have to use image manipulation software to remove text and secret door and such..... pain!
Is there any reason not to layer the PDF's? Seems like an easy thing to do for graphic design pros.....
We have been including interactive maps with our most recent Adventure Path (Jade Regent), that should help with those issues. As for the rest of this thread, please see this post.

Not to sound snarky, put Paizo does allow printing for personal use at commercial printers like kinkos, staples etc. That's cheaper than all the ink plus wear and teat on home printers.
They also offer beautiful printed versions of their material.
Again, not trying to be a smart arse, but they are two differet mediums.
