Favored class: +1 skill AND hp. Too much?

Homebrew and House Rules

Favored class currently grants players +1 skill OR hp / level.
This seems a little weak.

In order to give favored class more impact, our group is considering giving +1 skill AND hp / level.
Does this sound like too much?

Yes, it sounds like too much.

In theory the 11 core classes are perfectly balanced. That means if you take a level of fighter, then a level of barbarian, then a level of ranger, you should be very well balanced against someone else who simply takes 3 levels of fighter.

So, anything you do that tips the balance one way or the other will imbalance the system. Giving one SP or one HP, either way, you are imbalancing the theoretically balanced system. Doing both is twice as imbalancing.

OK, OK, you're going to argue that the system is not perfectly balanced. However, all that argument means is that if you start with the strongest (most imbalanced class in your favor) - whatever you think that might be - you are already motivated to not switch to a weaker class. Adding the motivation of one SKP or HP just makes you even more motivated to not switch, and adding both one SKP and one HP makes you extra extra motivated to not switch. On the other hand, if you start with a really weak class - whatever you think that might be - you are already motivated to switch to a powerful class, and in this case, you probably need an extra SKP or HP (or both) just to feel balanced against the strong classes except, of course, that they have the extra bonus too so you will never be balanced with them.

So, no matter whether you perceive the class system to be well-balanced or poorly-balanced, doubling the favored class bonus is just creating extra imbalance where it doesn't need to be.

Besides, what's so wrong with multiclassing that characters need to be punished by taking away their bonus cookies when they multiclass?

Emphasis mine! lol

Do characters get maxium hit points per level or roll them. If they don't get maxium hit points than two characters of level 10 of the same class can be unbalanced?

Giving someone and extra 10 hit points will unbalance the game in favour of non multi-class characters? I just don't see that an 1 extra hit point per level is creating a more unbalance game than bad dice rolling. But I do not yet have the rule book so I am not sure if you roll hit points per level, other than I know you start with max at first level.

I agree that the classes are fairly well balanced.

When characters multi-class or take a prestige class, they are rewarded with a wider variety of options and abilities.

The way I look at it, favored class is a reward for sticking with a certain class and seeing it through to the end.

In comparison to what? ... its pretty nice compared to nothing :)

We roll our hp each level, re-rolling 1's.

If somebody went all the way to lv 20 in their favored class, +1 skill & HP / lv would only give them 20 extra HP and Skill points. Would that really make much of a difference?

Very True. Just use the +1 Skill +1 hit point as a house rule. They can't stop you. I laugh at there army of pink poodles :)

True. We noticed a couple players with a "Meh, who cares?" attitude towards the Preferred Class bonus, so we thought that amping it up might increase interest.

But if +1 HP and Skill / lv is too much, we won't mess with it.

No it wouldn't I was agreeing with you or trying too :)

Depends on whether you want to bump up the power level in your campaign. 1HP/ level is roughly equal to the toughness feat. 1 Skill Point/ level is a bit better than the skill focus feat.

Skill points are worth a bit more than they used to now because there are a lot of feats that have more bang for the buck.

You are doing this to encourage folks to stick with their favored class? The rules all ready favor single class characters anyhow.

Oh sorry, I was replying to two different posts in the same message!

Yes, that was the idea.

Are there any specific rules that you have in mind that you could elaborate on?

Just pretty much all the classes now encourage you to stick with the class for the duration. Even fighters have higher level class features you miss out on if you multi class. Rogues get talents that improve as you level, etc.

Yeah, I see what you're saying.
