Note that it's dusk.

Elohir is likely only more spurred on by the fact, and will make no mention of it, preferring the night sky anyway.

female half elf cleric/ranger 7

"Anyone object to not falling over in the dark?" asks Hasnett, reaching for a sunrod.

Male Half-Elf Warlock 7

"We are fated to find this place, Hasnett. You could blindfold me and I could still find it. But if you insist...."

female half elf cleric/ranger 7

"We may be fated, but I'd rather meet my fate with an unsprained ankle."

Sorry for the delay; I'm in England and there's no internet in the lodgings, so online time will be scarce between now and Sunday. Hasnett's cracking a sunrod and you all are proceeding into the night through the jungle toward the volcano, right?

Female Halfling Rogue 7

When will they civilize that country? ;)

Hoku's all for proceeding with the proceeding.

OT:

Spoiler:
I gave a talk today in the School of Pythagoras, which actually predates the founding of Cambridge University. Very cool.

Male Half-Elf Warlock 7

As night approaches, Elohir decides to make conversation.

"Why do you suppose all the males of their race are so similar in appearance? Such invariability is rare among most species. I suppose we may just be so unfamiliar with them that they seem identical...hmmmm. A magical origin would seem likely in this case, assuming we are just not picking up on subtle differences. Also, the larger size of the females would seem to suggest a genetic predisposition towards matriarchy...." Elohir continues as the party moves on into the night.

"Perhaps they breed to produce those features in there young. I know some cultures use similar processes today. It could be what ever energies made this place causes twin births to all the more common aswell"

female half elf cleric/ranger 7

"Or they might just reproduce differently. Could they just bud, like plants?"

Male Human Barbarian 7

Irawaru spits.

"All youse ever do is yack." he growls to the group, "Less talk, more lookin'"

Sovereign Court

M Human Expert 7

There is a very well-traveled path leading from the north side of the (village?) toward the volcano. Take it, or strike out through the jungle?

female half elf cleric/ranger 7

Path until proven to be a bad idea.

Male Human Barbarian 7

Irawaru heads down the path.

Male Half-Elf Warlock 7

Elohir follows the barbarian down the path, completely oblivious to the barbarian's earlier outburst.

"You both bring up interesting possibilities. I had not considered an increase in twin births. I am, however, doubting the plant possibility without further inspection. As I know of it, plants are not typically divided up so characteristically by sex. They are self reproducing. If they do, in fact, sprout up from any plant, it would need to be magical in nature. Unless, of course, it is just some completely new plant that we have not encountered before," Elohir continues and then sighs. "It is not important I suppose. I could come up with endless theories. All questions will be answered at the volcano, I'm sure of it."

Perception (active or passive) 18:

Spoiler:
Rustling up ahead, as of several Small creatures, not yet in the light range.

Perception 1d20+3=23, great I feel the bad rolls coming >knocks on wood<

"We've got movement ahead"

female half elf cleric/ranger 7

"Small things from the sounds of it. Stay alert."

Male Half-Elf Warlock 7

"I could toss a bit of fire into the brush. This jungle is damp enough it would likely be contained and it might frighten them off."

Sovereign Court

M Human Expert 7

Response to Elohir? Other actions?

female half elf cleric/ranger 7

"Let's get a little closer first. If they're nervous, hearing us approach might be enough."

Male Half-Elf Warlock 7

Elohir shrugs, but nods and continues to move forward with the rest of the group. A small whisp of flame is at the ready in his palm, however.

Sovereign Court

M Human Expert 7

The creatures making the noise do not react in any way to the party's approach. As the light reaches them, you see that there is a stream of black ants crossing the trail, east to west. Ants the size of small dogs.

female half elf cleric/ranger 7

"And now let's get a little further away. Before they think we're interesting."

Male Half-Elf Warlock 7

Elohir is fine with this, and allows the flame in his palm to dissipate.

Sovereign Court

M Human Expert 7

The ants keep marching past, as ants on a trail are wont to do.

female half elf cleric/ranger 7

"Let's just let them cross the road first."

Hasnett watches the dog-sized ants for a while in silence. "I'd hate to see what they can do to crops."

"I'd hate to what a swarm of those things could do to living prey"

female half elf cleric/ranger 7

"I was trying not to think about that Aden."

Female Halfling Rogue 7

Hoku grimaces, "It's not pretty."

Male Half-Elf Warlock 7

Elohir shrugs dismissively and looks about with impatience.

"There are worse things."

Sovereign Court

M Human Expert 7

After a while, the ants marching West are paralleled by a second line marching East along the same path, each carrying small chunks of something bloody.

Y'all have seen ant trails, I assume, and you realize this could go on for a while?

"Well boys and girls... Question answered!" Aden watches as the second line brings in the bloody pieces

"Who's up for walking around, FAR around on insectoid friends?"

Male Half-Elf Warlock 7

Elohir sighs.

"If you all insist. Lead the way Master Aden."

Any I.D. on the bloody bits? Elohir is unconcerned but someone should probably check.

female half elf cleric/ranger 7

As the bits pass by, Hasnett hopes they don't belong to anyone they've met.

Spoiler:
Reptilian

female half elf cleric/ranger 7

"Looks like they did better with the lizards than we did... Can we go around them?"

Male Half-Elf Warlock 7

"It is no concern of ours then," says Elohir and he begins making his way around the ant trail, looking for its end.

"You do realize, though, that depending on which way we are going, we may just be walking to their nest before we find an end to this line."

Sovereign Court

M Human Expert 7

Apologies, folks, but there will be some delay. I might be able to update properly later today, but will be only minimally online Wed. & Thurs, so it might not make much difference. I'll do my best.

Sovereign Court

M Human Expert 7

Given that you were able to tell when the line started doubling back, you can make a good guess about which end of the line is not the nest. The party starts traipsing through the night jungle, which is full of odd noises and things moving through the undergrowth. Eventually, you come to the end of the ant trail.

You find there the mostly-eaten carcass of another large reptile. It is difficult to tell much about it without approaching the ants closer, but it looks as though it was somewhat larger than a man, with an enormous head topped with a thick dome of bone.

Looking again at the giant ants "I can only imagine the size of the mosquitoes around here. And me without netting"

I shall henceforth call this land... TEXAS! Because everthing's bigger in Texas

female half elf cleric/ranger 7

"Well thank you Aden for that happy thought." Hasnett looks around for any signs of immediate danger.

Just using passive perception for now.

Male Half-Elf Warlock 7

"That would be a troublesome creature indeed. Most likely it would prey upon larger game than us, however. This jungle seems fairly safe as long as one minds their business and makes the occasional show of strength."

Male Human Barbarian 7

Irawaru goes to inspect the dome-headed creature's teeth.

It may not have been clear, but note that that involves getting rather close to the ants that are dissecting the carcass. Confirm?

female half elf cleric/ranger 7

"Irawaru - we've just gone to some trouble to move away from the ants ..."

Male Human Barbarian 7

"Eh."

Irawaru moves away again from the carcass.

"Was interested, that's all."

Sovereign Court

M Human Expert 7

Time to roll some dice, people! Initiative, Perception (minimum of passive or roll) and tell me where you are on the map. You're approaching from the southwest. Green is dense foliage (cover and concealment), but can be climbed (or treated as difficult terrain with a DC14 Athletics or Acrobatics check per move action). Brown is the carcass. Light is from a sunrod, so you're fine there.

female half elf cleric/ranger 7

Perception; init (1d20+11=12, 1d20+3=13)

Ahem. Use my passive perception of 21 if you please, Mr DM sir. Place the clueless cleric at Y23 on the map.
