picking up from the discussion thread

Harther Maol wrote:

After exchanging pleasentries with Havrin for a little while Harther sidles up to one of the crew members and asks:
"How's the ale tonight?"

Depending on the answer he may continue chatting or go for a quick survey of the ship before tucking in for bed.

A tall muscular man in loose white cotton tunic and pants answers for the thin aging man you queried. "Night shift goes on in a few turns, we'll be needin to stay sharp. Gleeful Tom don't talk much, on account of his tongue. Got eaten." The curt man motions to the thinner one, who smiles to show a mostly toothless, and tongueless, mouth. They walk out together, along with quite a few of the other desert folk, including a musician or two. Nearly as soon as they leave, another crowd enters and heads straight for the ale casks. More food is brought out and lain at tables near the kitchen. The mood changes palpably, as the quiet discipline of a crew preparing for work is traded for a work-worn but restless one. One crewman shouts "We works the day!" and in answer, many of his fellows toast and answer "We drinks the night!". They dine quickly, and join the revelry already in motion.

Havrin:

Spoiler:
The Dervish is a very large ship with enough crew to man three full shifts(nearly forty). You are not sure who the stocky man was, but his manner suggested urgency. The ship has seven decks total, and a hold. It takes you a bit to traverse the three decks during shift change, but you arrive on the weather deck shortly enough, Harther in tow.

As Havrin and Harther make their way to the weather deck, the music starts to slow as some of the crew and many of the passengers retire. Antal arrives on the weather deck with a pocketful of spare room keys, to find Harther and Havrin turning to leave, seeing that all is well as dusk cedes to night.

Male Halfling Sorcerer 3 (Water Elemental Bloodline)

Antal whistles quietly the tune of Dancing with Giants as he looks at the different keys he's wound up with. Seeing the Human and Gnome heading back in he gives a friendly wave. Then he begins scanning the deck looking for an out of the way place to lie under the stars for a bit.

Havrin nods to Antal as he heads back down to the mess hall. "Good hunting," he says with a grin, glancing at the keys in the halfling's hand.

Once back in the mess hall, Havrin approaches Sersi as she packs up her fiddle. "Another evening of fine music," he compliments the half-elf with a shy smile. "I shall miss your fiddle playing and singing once we disembark in Midsky." He wishes Sersi and Harther a good evening, and retires to his cabin for the night.

Havrin, Harther, Antal:

As Havrin is heading through the hatch, you hear a distant cry from the bow of the ship, then another, then more cries and steel. The spring assisted hatch door heading to the lower decks suddenly shudders and slams closed. Behind it stands a dark figure, almost indiscernible from the night sky. He pulls a shining blue knife and leaps over the hatch towards Havrin
Havrin roll a Reflex save please as the door hatch threatens to close on you

Regarding Initiative:

Spoiler:
In the interest of keeping things moving during combat, all enemies will share an initiative, and you will have one day to use your initiative. I will roll your initiatives to make things easier and post them, but for the most part the first post will take precedence, and initiative will be used to determine whether you go before or after the enemy. I'll see how this works and adjust as needed.

Initiative Order:

Spoiler:

22 Antal
16 Sirsi
9 Harther
7 Harvin
7 Dark figure
3 Barak

The assailant will receive a surprise round as soon as your trap is resolved Havrin.

Outie Awesome Mister Wizard 5/Science Guy 5/OT-8 10

All: Harther made a decent point on the OOC board, I think I'll be rolling saves for now to speed things along...if you have any concerns you know where they go =).

Havrin:

Spoiler:

You try to slip your leg out of the way but are just too slow as the hatch snaps shut on your leg like a bear trap, wrenching your leg something fierce and dealing you 7 points of damage. The assailant takes advantage of the situation, leaping over the hatch and slashing with his knife, leaving a blue incandescent trail of light. He easily jabs into your trapped leg for another 9 points of damage (poor leg!)

Harther, Antal:

I assume you would both be on deck, and everyone, it's your initiative

You see Havrin begin to descend the ladder to go below deck when the hatch slams shut on his leg and a dark figure with a glowing blue blade leaps over and stabs into his leg.

Sirsi:

Spoiler:
As the night winds down, most of the passengers and crew have retired to their cabins. You find almost 2g in silver and copper coins in your tip bucket. The few crew that remain are playing a drinking game in a corner they call "Spit the Shammer", but the rules aren't entirely clear to you. Needless to say, they are all plastered.

Male Halfling Sorcerer 3 (Water Elemental Bloodline)

Still smiling, Antal whispers arcane words and ice begins to cover his body forming a suit of armor.

"And here I thought the entertainment was winding down."

Cast Mage Armor.

Female Human Oracle 1

Sirsi picks over some left overs, she had a few bites between tunes but still feels a little hungry.
Since the sailers don't seem to be able to coherently teach her the game they're playing she'll retire off to bed.

am i on deck? i could be checking in on any patients before i go to bed

Grimacing in pain and anger, Havrin pulls out his kukri and tries to defend himself from his assailant [Total Defense, +4 Dodge bonus to AC] in hopes that others nearby will distract the dark figure enough to allow Havrin to extricate his leg.

Assuming Harther is next to Havrin, Harther will take a 5ft step to flank the assailant and sneak attack him.

Barak Ironstar wrote:

Barak:

Spoiler:

Patients would in no way be on the weather deck, but rather on the fifth deck(the infirmary) or in their cabins if they've requested treatment there. I assumed you were in the mess hall. The infirmary is quiet tonight, as Captain Stormborn keeps her crew and passengers well nourished and has helpful passengers like yourself as well as a small medical staff to keep those on board in good health. However, none of the doctors that usually attend here are anywhere to be seen.

Havrin Stahl wrote:

Havrin:

Spoiler:

Unfortunately you would lose any dodge bonus the moment you gained it as you are flat footed. However I will allow you to take the standard action to lift the hatch and slip your leg out which provokes an attack of opportunity from your assailant, and then stand up as a move action.

As you extract your leg, the shrouded figure slashes at your arms as you attempt to lift the hatch, dealing 5 points of damage. You manage to extract your leg and stand up as Harther comes to your defense.

Harther:

Spoiler:
I wouldn't think you were close enough to 5 ft around the hatch to flank but were you to hop 15ft behind him...

Harther blinks out of sight and reappears behind the cloaked assassin. The figure grunts and looks down, the tip of a slim sword poking out below her ribs. The sword slides out, and the wounded woman turns to retaliate. Her hood drops as she turns forcefully, revealing shock white hair and a face as dark as the night sky. She takes a step to put her back away from Havrin. Brilliant yellow eyes shoot daggers at you, Harther, as she brings her glowing knife to bear but the attack at your kidneys glances off your swordbelt.

Antal:

Spoiler:
You hear shouts from behind you as a thin layer of ice enshrouds your clothing. While small floating shards of ice grow out of thin air to encircle your body, a few of them form a crown to protect your head. As your armor finishes forming, footsteps follow the shouts and you see three cloaked figures running full out towards you.

male Dwarf cleric 3

should there be some medical staff around?

On the next round, Havrin will take a 5' step back from the assailant in an attempt to drink a potion of cure light wounds without provoking an AoO. If more attackers show up before he can do this, he will instead attack the closest enemy with his kukri, especially if he can use his 5' step to get into a flanking position.

(Too bad Havrin's greatsword and longbow are in his cabin!)

Harther:

As the dark skinned woman attempts to relieve you of an organ or two, your hand glows blood red, slamming into her chest with a sickening sound as armor clothing and flesh sear and melt. She screams in pain, direly wounded, but presses her attack. She attempts to raise her knife arm and stab at you, but as she does blood comes gushing from the gaping wound in her chest. She screams, falling to her knees, her breathing raspy and belabored.

Antal:
The three cloaked figures are coming right for you Antal. One of them charges you, slipping a bright blue knife out of an arm sheath. He attempts to slash at you repeatedly but each time he is rebuked; scolded by your revolving wall of icicles. The other two surround you on either side and make their own attempts to pierce your revolving armor. The first to approach watches for an opening and lashes out, hitting you with a brutal slash across the ribs for 6 damage [Critical: 19, x3]. The second attempts to wall you in, and attacks, emboldened by his partner's success. Following a similar strategy, he manages to get a slash through, dealing you 6 damage.

A hoarse scream echoes through the first four or so decks of the ship, a cry of pain and frustration. Sirsi you hear doors opening and muttering outside your cabin.

Barak:

Spoiler:
As you are pondering on whether there should be medical staff attending or not, the ship's medic and two of his assistants come barreling through the infirmary, carrying a bleeding man on a stretcher between them. The Captain follows, carrying a wounded woman with the assistance of a dwarf in little more than his small clothes. A barefoot man in vest, sash, and baggy linen trousers comes in on the Captain's heels, carrying yet another wounded crew member. A gruff voice emits from a weathered face "You, healer, with me. Now." He lays his burden down gently on a table and turns quickly to leave.

Male Halfling Sorcerer 3 (Water Elemental Bloodline)

Despite the pain, the smile never leaves Antal's face. He reaches down and pulls his wand of Reduce Person out of his boot. Quickly he points it at himself and the world begins to become larger.

Draw my wand of Reduce Person and use it on myself. +2 more to my AC. Then if I can I will take a 5 foot step away from my assailants.

Antal: Your attackers flinch as you quickly draw your wand, while you essentially disappear from sight. As you step away your attackers are confused for a moment as their quarry has nearly vanished before them. Finally their eyes find you, as Havrin steps over your head and engages the confounded creatures.

The footsteps you heard were those of the attackers approaching Antal, I just like to keep individualized perspectives when possible or necessary, even when two players might be in the same room. Also it's not necessary to roll twice for a similar action, such as making an attack based on one contingency or another(but i'll take the 2nd one here).

Your leg feels more able as you leap to Antal's defense, easily stepping over the tiny halfling. Your kukri slices into the dark enemy's wafer thin armor, catching the port-most under the ribs.

Harther: You realize that the bleeding woman at your feet is -impossibly- still alive, and is determined to draw blood from you yet. She manages to dodge your thrusting blade and curses angrily at you in a guttural and unintelligible language.

You hear a scream, then the opening of doors and muttering outside. With your check you don't make any distinct conversation out, but one woman has clearly lost her composition. "What was that!" she asks fearfully "and where is the Captain!? She has to protect me!!!"

Spoiler:
The man is completely silent as he leads you down through the crew's permanent quarters and down again, into a vast hallway. Nearly as wide and half as long as the whole ship, many crates and barrels are stacked at the fore, near the stairs, though some are in pieces. The hallway ends at a dark stone door, etched in golden runes, a heavy wheel shaped handle featured prominently in the center. As your eyes quickly adjust to the dim of this deck, you realize there are bodies strewn about, though not all of them have flesh. Amongst what appear to be members of the crew are a few shapes that seem a mockery of the elven-kind you have come to know. One has dark purple skin and platinum blond hair, the other blue-black with hair the color of moonlight. Both have pale yellow eyes, dark cloaks and armor; both look like they were nearly torn in half. Finally, two pitch black skeletons lay shattered near the large stone door, their skulls wicked and elongated, mouths full of crooked fangs. "Some of the crew are still alive, this is your work". The stern man points to a small human woman with pitch black hair moaning on the ground, in a puddle of blood, at one of the assailants feet, her head half-scalped. "When you're done with the crew, the Captain would like one of the Shadows for questioning, if possible." He collects another injured crewman and ascends the stairs, leaving you alone in this nightmare.

Antal, Havrin, Harther: As Havrin enters the melee, the dark skinned woman takes another stab at Harther, but falls unconscious with the effort in a pool of her own blood. With Havrin locked in combat with the cloaked figure furthest to port(3), the fore most assailant(2) moves to join in, but trips over a coil of rope and fumbles his weapon, cursing again in that awful grating tongue. As he attempts to retrieve his weapon, Havrin strikes like a coiled serpent, slapping the assassin broadside with his kukri and slicing on the backswing. Havrin's target(3) menaces him, and moves to flank with his clumsy partner. Clearly taking his time with his distracted opponent, he finds an organ and strikes him in the back for 10 points of damage. The remaining attacker(4) runs to the aid of his fallen ally(1), and strikes at Harther with ferocity for 8 points of damage.

Havrin and Harther attempt to rally a counterattack, but Harther fumbles. Havrin turns and slices into the flanking opponent for 6 damage, and takes a step away to keep his back clear.

Sirsi O'Bannon wrote:

Antal:

Both of the figures hear your muttered words of power and manage to shield themselves from the worst of your wave of piercing icy daggers. Havrin is sprayed with icy dust and snow as he steps out of the spell's path, snowflakes sticking to his whiskers. As the storm emits a windy burst, their hoods flutter back, revealing a marked resemblance to the woman who first attacked, in a masculine form. Dark purple to blue-black skin and shocking white hair frame piercing pale yellow eyes and the slightest hint of elongated canines. Almost elven, but longer and only slightly more sinewy, the creatures seem eerie and wicked in the moonlit night.

Assassins:
Icy daggers riddle Havrin's original quarry(3), and he falls to the ground with a large but quickly melting shard piercing his kneecap. His partner moves around to Havrin's back and attempts a flanking maneuver, but Havrin proves vigilant against the pincer attack, managing to fend off both attackers. Harther is not as fortunate, as his attacker manages to turn the battle in his favor, slicing Harther open from shoulder to hip for 9 damage(Critical 20, x2). In a smooth motion following his cut he moves around Harther to stand over his fallen ally, the dark-skinned femme.

Do you really mean to kill everyone? I will allow a one time concession as it does not seem you fully understood Selective Channeling, and let it do what you intended.

A wave of sickly red light bursts from Harther, sweeping over the deck but washing harmlessly over Havrin and Antal. The invaders, however, are not so lucky, as it appears to gather and implode upon the helpless creatures. The woman almost seems to melt away, and another is rendered unconscious from the attack.

You wouldn't need to use stabilize if you healed everyone...healing automatically stabilizes.

A burst of pale blue light sweeps through the room, concentrating on many of the bodies and delicately settling in their wounds. Some of the injured gasp as they return to consciousness, but most show little change. One of the dark creatures bolts upright and dazedly searches for his weapon, and, finding it, picks it up, scanning the room for threats...or victims.

Perception (search) check if necessary to find anything interesting on the bodies: 27 (17+10). Havrin is particulary interested in examining those glowing blades, and in finding any signs of who/what these creatures are and why they are here.

Havrin turns to Antal and offers his hand "By the way, my name is Havrin. It is a pleasure to meet you, Antal. Harther," he continues as he turns to the gnome, "thank you for saving me from that dark-skinned b!%@#. She would have had me for sure if not for you. That was very well fought, both of you."

14 to Hit (9+5) [without flanking; 16 to Hit with flanking]
4 to Damage (2+2)

Havrin:

You pick your way over fallen enemies, and aim a slash at the assailant, taking him in the arm for 4 damage. He retaliates, but unable to get past your defenses, bolts for the nearest upright. He is not fast enough and is caught between you and Harther. You are able to apprehend him and put him down. You may choose to leave him alive at this point but all enemies are defeated...at least on the weather deck!

Sirsi:
As the last enemy is falling, you makes it to the hatch heading to the weather deck and blood is dripping through it's seams...

Barak:

Spoiler:
The man grins at you, showing perfectly brilliant blue-white teeth, elongated canines flashing dangerously. He moves to throw a wicked blue knife at you but you shoot first, and he falls back to the ground where you found him. His knife clatters harmlessly near your feet. The wolf growls at him, takes a sniff, and pads back to you with a victorious swagger.

We'll be moving out of initiative, good job everyone, that was a tough fight }=D. I'm still working out my experience system but if I am awarding classical experience it will be posted by the end of the week. In the mean time...there are questions to be answered aboard the Dervish! All posts will again be taken as they come, rather than in a grouped initiative order.

Barak will start checking on the wounded, when he has confirmed that they are stable, and that any bad guys will not recover too quickly he will then leave and see if he can help anywhere else, if he meets any concious crew or passengers he will ask them what is happening

Okay, now:

Havrin secures the one surviving assailant for further questioning, then wipes the blood from his kukri on one of the dead attackers as he bends to examine the bodies, listening for other signs of battle on the ship. "Well, friends," he says to Harther and Antal with a grim smile, "I wonder what other diversions the night has in store for us?"

Perception (search) check if necessary to find anything interesting on the bodies: 27 (17+10). Havrin is particulary interested in examining those glowing blades, and in finding any signs of who/what these creatures are and why they are here.

Female Human Oracle 1

Sirsi will push her way up through the hatch, take a look around and realise it's all over.
"Missed the party did I? Well, let me at least help with the clean-up."
Sirsi will use Cure Light Wounds on anyone that looks beaten up (won't bother on anyone just a little bruised (i.e. 2-3 hp down)), before asking, "well, is someone going to tell me what's been going on or shall I just be returning to bed now?"

Havrin grins upon seeing Sersi. "Well, Miss, we could certainly use a bit of help tidying up - I would hate for the Captain to see the mess we made of her deck. And if you could help us find a bit of healing," he gestures to Antal, Harther, and himself, "we would certainly appreciate it." Sersi notices that the tall human is bleeding from wounds in his leg, arms, and back. The halfling is bleeding from chest wounds, and the gnome bears a deep wound running from shoulder to hip.

"By the way," he adds as he trusses up the surviving dark-skinned assailant, searching for hidden weapons, "have you ever seen creatures like this before? As you can see, we were attacked by four of them, and I would guess by the sounds of things across the ship that more attacked elsewhere."

Havrin has taken 26 hp of damage, and I believe that Harther and Antal are down significantly as well. Any healing will help!

Outie Awesome Mister Wizard 5/Science Guy 5/OT-8 10

Barak:

Spoiler:
Anyone living has already been stabilized by your positive energy, but the creature you had to put down is bleeding out. You stabilize him and his breathing regulates. There are a few conscious, moaning crew members among the dead. When you query them about the melee, you are informed that these creatures, as well as another group, sawed their way out of a number of crates and barrels the crew had picked up in Syldonar. "They comes up into our quarters they do, and just starts stabbin and slicin! It was madness, we tried to fight them back, it's lucky for us Ah'tar wasn't downstairs or we'd all be done fer!". The man briefly describes how the ships Sidhat crashed into the crew quarters and forced the attackers to retreat into the engine deck. A group of the attackers quaffed potions and disappeared from sight, while the two attackers you found smashed open a few more barrels and out came the black skeletons, who did most of the damage seen on the deck. As the crew came to engage them, they were torn to shreds on their teeth and claws. During the melee a dwarf came from below, in the hold, and with Ah'tar managed to dispatch the attackers, but most of the crew were already dead or dying.

Sirsi forces the hatch open, displacing the bloodless dark skinned woman and dousing herself in the red liquid.

Sirsi: You see the bodies of four dark-skinned figures laying on the ground, and three men bleeding profusely.

I'll let you guys figure out your own healing situation =)

Havrin you find the following on the bodies of the assailants, and realize that another of them is still breathing:

Spoiler:

91gp
26 glittering gems collected in small pouches
1 orange potion
10 or so empty bottles
4 of the blue knives they wielded against you
an ornate scrollcase, seemingly air- and watertight

barak will go searching for any otheres who may need healing, he will start with the infirmary

Male Gnome Cleric - 2 Levels, Rogue - 1 Level

"Does anyone know, what the heck that was about?"

"Oh yeah, miss I could use a little in the way of magical recuperation"

"You don't owe me anything Havrin, just remember this is how I react when startled"

Barely pausing to take a breath as he addresses everyone in short order, he then taps his foot impatiently waiting for a response.

"Be that as it may, friend Harther, I believe that you and Antal both deserve an equal share of the spoils." After securing the second surviving assailant, Havrin hands Harther and Antal each:

Spoiler:

30 gp
9 glittering gems
1 blue knife

"Also, my friends, I discovered these items on our attackers." Havrin displays an orange potion, 10 empty bottles, and an ornate scrollcase, seemingly air- and watertight. "Do any of you have any idea what these may be?"

Havrin only speaks Common, and has zero ranks in Linguistics.

Male Halfling Sorcerer 3 (Water Elemental Bloodline)

Sorry, I only speak Common and Halfling.

Antal with a pained smile on his face bows before the bard and begins to grow in height as his Reduce Person fades.

"Some help would be most appreciated beautiful lady."

He then looks to Havrin as he is handed some wealth.

"I could take a look at those other items."

Antal begins casting another spell and his eyes begin to glow softly.

I cast Detect Magic and look over the other spoils that were found.
