We need an economical, Golarion friendly version of campaign coins. They don't even need to be metal. They do need to be cheaper than real money. That's the killer right there. It has to be cheaper than using real money.
We just need copper, silver, gold, plat. But we need them in many demoniations (1,5,10,25,50,100,250,500,1000) and quantities such that it'd be enough for 4 players and a DM.
Come on Paizo, you can dooo eeet!
P.S. Gems would be sweet too!

This would be sweet :) I picked up a whole bunch of coins at Gen*Con West (their last year, darn it) at a great price, for my Serenity game, but not enough for the variety I'd like in a D&D game. I think the Campaign Coins are gorgeous, but a bit pricey for what I would normally pay ... I do like the feel of metal coins, it just gives the right sound and heft.

Well... from the response (or lack thereof) it appears that this idea went over like the proverbial lead balloon.

Not so... the gamemastery forums are less visited than the main ones are. I look at them all 3-4 times a day and didn't notice this post... I would love it if it were possible for a decent price... as long as it wasn't in a subscription

We could always try the McDonalds "Make fun of your neighbors!" promotion. Just acquire lots of coins from countries whose coinage is worthless.
Then sell it, saying a Peruvian centimo is a cp (made from brass), a Guatemalan quetzal is a sp (made from aluminum?), etc.

I think it's a great idea, but I didn't really have anything to contribute beyond a "me too" post.
I'll chime in and say that I haven't purchased any campaign coins because:
1. Cost prohibitive.
2. Not accurate coinage for my current campaign.
To be honest, it's 2 more than 1. Now, coins made specifically for a Pathfinder campaign? I could be swayed.

What the Nine Hells... I'll chime in too. :)
I'd like this idea, and agree with those that posted before myself, it would need to be cost friendly (not cost-prohibitive sp?), with a nice variety of coins (and if done well, buying multiple sets is always an option.) And I like the idea of gemstones too. (I take the time to roll them up on treasure, I'd want to have something to "hand-out") This could really do something fun. Again... if priced right, and done well.
Okay... that's two coppers from a dragon. :)

Ooohhh.... I never thought of using real money. Is that cheaper than Campaign Coins? I expect the main problem with using real money would be players making off with your change.
Really though, I am interested in the Campaign Coins product and just haven't invested in it because of cost to get a usable set.
However, if Paizo produced an alternative to the existing Campaign Coins, it seems like it would just split the market between those already using Campaign Coins and those adopting the alternative.
With the Pathfinder compatibility license, Golarion-specific coins from the manufacturer of Campaign Coins (I forget the company name) might be possible, but probably not cheaper than the existing Campaign Coins.

Well if it were Golarion specific coins, it would be cheaper... like FREE! if it came from some third party, without a special, unique license.
I have actually looked into buying a press, dies, and aluminum for making my own coins to sell. It can be done at a decent price, but I lack the start up funds.
Instead, I am just designing my own paper coins. I know, I know, not the same, and you are right. I too prefer the feel of a real coin. But the cost is just too high. Paper coins give me the variety I want, allow me to print as many as I could possibly want, and still make decent coins.
Paizo is selling paper minis (which look so darn cool!) so maybe someday they will come out with paper coins.

Somebody in another thread posted the idea of going through token companies, like the kind you get in arcades or pay toilets. I poked around a few site and they can do copper, nickle (= silver) and brass (= gold). The price per coin isn't bad but there are minimum orders of like 5,000, and there is a set-up fee for any new images they have to make a die for. But if there were enough people interested and everybody put in like $50-$100, you could get a whole lot of a few different coins. What do you really need? 1 and 5 cp, 1 and 5 sp, 1, 5, maybe 10 gp? Go with a super simple design like a large number on one side and crown or something on the other side. And if it were generic, Golarion folks could use them, but so could other folks, and the more people who we "in," the lower the cost would be for each. I think it's doable, but I haven't had the time to actually put together real numbers.

I think you'd definitely need more demoninations; 250 for each, 500 for each, 1,000 for each, and then you'd need platinum with the same multiples. Perhaps even 5 and 10K.

I found some neat acrylic gemstones that were three dimensional :)
Go here and take a peek. I'll be able to tell you how good later once they arrive :)
Enjoy!

Received my gems today, and they are as good looking in person as they are in the pictures :) Good mix of colors and types -- a large round, a teardrop, a rectangle, and a heart, in clear, yellow, red, green, blue and purple.

These are nice for cardstock coins.
$5.99 for the PDF?!?But you should get them from Paizo for the same price.
They are nice, I have them.

With the Worldworks coins there is a lot of cutting out and stuff but it isn't really hard or anything, just somewhat time consuming as you sit and watch TV or something. I like them a lot and having flowery elven coins that break down from a flower head type of shape into smaller denominational 'petals' is pretty cool as are the Dwarven axe-head shaped coins that have a ruin embedded into the coin that is visible when held up to a light to verify their authenticity.
5.99 isn't bad for something like that. There is also human coins and gold and silver/platinum bars. All come in a bunch of denominations and colors to simulate gold, silver, copper, platinum, etc....
try 'em out, they aren't bad.

I love tactile game aids, and I've looked at campaign coins more than a few times; but they are just too pricey for me to justify. However, if they were Golarion specific I would probably be debating my third or fourth set. Funny how affection for a setting will alter one's decision making.
I would not be opposed to plastic coins, like the ones we used in grade school. The denominations that I would like to see are 1, 2, 5, and 10 for each "metal"...then 20, 50, and 100sp; 20 and 50gp; and 20pp.
I've used plastic gems that I bought at a local bead/craft store, and they're grand.

Hmmmm, more wheels turning. Perhaps another Mapping Adventures expansion?
Yeppers sounds good to me!
