Does anyone have any suggestions on developing the Soul Pillars a little more? My players just discovered the lesser pillars last night.
The cleric cast detect evil on the pillars...and I wasn't sure what response to give. Luckily it was at the end of the session so I was able to beg off of an answer until next time in two weeks.
I'm thinking that the pillars would radiate evil...but how much? What about magic?
Anyone else come up with some ideas for these that I can steal...um, borrow?

I haven't played the chapter yet (but it is fast approaching). Based on the phrases "undead spirits trapped within" and "tortured souls" as descriptions, I would interpret that humans would find it evil. If I was going to put an alignment to it, I would say Neutral Evil (i.e. not destructive evil and not contractual evil).
The magazines listed the soul pillars as having strong necromancy and evocation auras.
Magically speaking, they are permanent "contact other plane" items. That would be fairly strong (there are no charges associated with it, so it is similar to an artifact).

Not having my books with me, I can only go on memory. And when my cleric detected on it, I recall saying 'You clap your hands to your face and shriek in pain as the monstrous power splits your skull.'*
I mean, it's a minor artifact if I recall correctly. Used to store undead souls. It is seriously overwhelming evil.

*The party cleric was not harmed, just given a REALLY bad headache.
