The current rules for round four seem designed to test not only the writer's flexabiltiy, but also their ability to write under deadline pressure.
All their work has to be tossed out!

I find this turn of events fascinating. Stat blocks aren't really my thing, so I'm happy to be able to get into this round. I remember that there was speculation that the judges would do this sort of thing (villain switcheroo) for the stat block round. Funny how it ended up coming to pass, but at a later timetable....
Sometimes we need to tap a freelancer to finish a project on short notice.
Sometimes we need a freelancer to revise a section of their manuscript on short notice (say, if the turnover was very late).
Heck, these sort of things take up about half of James' time. ;)
Being able to grab the ball, start running, and score is a mark of a true superstar.

Personally, I am really excited by the rules. I think it's a great twist and in all honestly, nothing gets the creative juices flowing like this kind of shock.
My only hope is that I do the villain I have chosen justice, and that it pleases the original creator.
...oh, and that everyone thinks it's great and votes for it.. too...
ahem.

For some I know it means tossing out stuff they have probably been preparing for weeks...but now we get to see the real creativity come out.

Very much in keeping with the reality show cruelty.
On the flip side reading a couple of those villains made me think 'it would be great if they had..."
I think that kind of inspiration is a superstar mark.

I think the stat block may be a big determining factor in which villain people chose enter in round 4. Alot of entries scored well with voters because the stat blocks were more detailed and better reflected the character concept from round 2. I think this alone means we may see the same villains popping up in several entries.
Not sure how well this will work....perhaps all Top 8 member villains should have been randomly dealt out, so that there was no choice in the matter. I would think of that as more of a freelance challenge.

I agree that it would be more of a challenge, but for the purposes of this challenge some would get front runners with built-in support and some would get neat, but less regaled villains. Letting people choose was the right move here.
heh, they should all choose the bard who makes heroes into legends :P

Do the entrants have to use the full stat blocks of the villains? Eg. if the average stat block submitted is 1,000-1,500 words, that doesn't leave a lot for the rest of the lair & other encounters. By listing the villain as [name], x hp, and maybe a few more bits of info (perhaps tactics), it will mean that the entrants have more room for maneuver.
I can imagine that otherwise, only the shortest villain stat blocks would be used. Just an idea, anyway.
We don't need to use the stat block. We are asked to mention tactics the villain uses if encountered in particular spaces when appropriate.
