One of the things that Jonas was taught during his time learning the arcane arts was to have a fresh focus and not dwell upon failures of the past. Too bad that he had forgotten that little bit of advice when he attempted to cast his illusory spell a second time- a brief, fearful thought of "What if my spell fizzles out again like it did at the manse where we captured the cultist?" made certain that history repeated itself once again during the ambush.

Jonas supposes that it could be chalked up to stress during a combat situation, the second one that he's gone into, but it would be a small cold comfort if it earned him a belly full of steel- which the ambushed cultists have in spades, even if they were initially caught off guard.

"No sense in crying over spilt milk, even if that milk just happened to be a useful spell that could help tip the balance in favor of the ambushers- namely us..." Jonas thought to himself, as a momentary lull in the midst of combat affords him the ability to think back upon the events happening as the combat began in earnest.

Galvan shouts, "BREE-YARK!"

It all started when the minotaur sergeant gave the signal to begin the ambush.

Sunaj did his shadowy bit, as befitting of the darkness steeped within his drow heritage; it certainly surprised the tiefling female cultist- and his spiteful glamour certainly would be something that she wouldn't forget anytime soon.

Not to be outdone, the Minotaur sargeant comes barrelling into the fray, swinging his axe at two unlucky elves close by.

One of the two unlucky elves was unlucky enough to be crippled in the arm by the swing. The human cultists act, but due to the surprise, was unable to do more than to waste their efforts. "And I wonder why I have this sudden sense of deja-vu..." Jonas dryly notes to himself as he considered how "useful" he was with his own spellcasting during the past minute or so.

The other elf, more luckier than his fellow elf, manages to strike back at the minotaur sergeant with his own rapier slash. Jonas registers that tidbit in the back of his mind as a dwarf tries to strike Isari with a swing of his battleaxe, but is unsuccessful in the attempt- the mercenary swordsman deftly avoiding the charge. Having come to their bearings at last, the human cultist nearest to the drow assemblyman finally is able to connect and Sunaj is struck on his shoulder by a swing of the human cultist's flail.

The mercenary swordsman's silent but steely "reply" stops the dwarf briefly in his tracks. By now, another human rushes up to Galvan and lands a strike- a human that Jonas sourly notes was among the ones targeted by his spell- a spell that failed yet once again in the heat of battle.

Half wondering if he should stick to something more basic- something that he was able to cast successfully in the past, such as magic missle, Jonas' thoughts go back to the present- just in time to witness the crippled elf dissappear in cloud of smoke and reappear some distance away. "And here I thought only the Elves' elder cousins, the Eladrins were able to do that...".

With that, Jonas decides that once the battle is finished, he'll see if he should end up making a change or two to his spellbook- but only if he and his illustrious fellows survive the ambush attempt.
