Scarab Sages

Wanted: A Self motivated Crime reporter who is willing to write freelance concerning some bizarre cannibal trucker murders in Arizona. No guarantee of pay but plenty of opportunity. Photography and Writing Skills are a must.

My PbP game, The Chronicles of the Sunlight Scoop could use another player. The character in question would be a freelance reporter trying to break into the big time. The game is a Call of Cthulhu d20 game, but it is not necessary for you to be overly familiar with the system (provided you have experience with d20 games). Our current players include Kenny (a cautious reporter) and Carlotta (a pilot with aspirations to photography).

If you are interested in invesatigating some creepy, quirky mythos fun, please let me know.

I would love to play but I don't have any Call of Cthulhu or d20 books. I do have an ancient copy of Call of Cthulhu first edition.

So long as you understand the d20 core rules (skills, feats, BAB, etc) then I can probably talk you through character creation pretty easily.

Also, the D20 modern SRD is a pretty close rules set except for classes and sanity rules.

Scarab Sages

Isn't the d20 system the same as D&D 3.5 but just easier to read and use.

It is the same. D&D 3.5 is just a variant of the d20 system. In modern (and Cthulhu d20) some (but not all) of the skills and feats are different. As well, in Cthulhu d20 there are only two character 'classes,' Defense or Offense. You basically get to pick your own skills, feats and Good Saves.

Edit: And let me add, this is not a combat oriented game. Combat in Call of Cthulhu, regardless of edition, is often a good way to die. A good gather information roll will often do more to save the day than a good attack roll.

Allright I'll give it a try. What are the character build peramaters.

Welcome aboard. From the discussion thread for the game.

There are two “Classes” in Call of Cthuhlu d20. They are "Defensive" and "Offensive"

Defensive 1st level has 2 good saves (choose from Fort, Ref, Will; good saves are +2, the other is +0), +0 BAB, and +2 AC.
Offensive 1st level has 1 good save, +1 BAB, and 1 free weapon proficiency feat.

Each character recieves 2 feats to begin with (+1 weapon for offensive characters)

Each character picks a profession which allows for eight associated skills +3 skills of a characters choice.

If you pick a profession, I'll give you a list of skills associated with that profession. Typical Professions include Antiquarian, Archaelogist, Artist/Musician, Blue collar Worker, Criminal, Priest, Soldier, Technician, Businessman, Writer/Reporter.

If you want the writer/reporter profession – the associated class skills are:
craft (photography)
craft (writing)
Diplomacy
Gather Information
Innuendo
Knowledge (any one)
Knowledge (any one)
Research
Sense Motive
+3 of the players choice.

Characters start with 32 skill points (+int. bonus x4)

Abilities are either 4d6, drop the lowest, arrange as desired; or 28 point buy.

Each character will have $12,000 starting cash to buy this or that. (laptops, cameras and the like would be appropriate). Assume modern prices. This may take a little googling or “shopping” on Amazon or the like.

Scarab Sages

If you get all that, I will tell you about your sanity score when the rest of the character is completed. And if you want a specialized background (military, police, medical, etc.) let me know and I'll tell you what the available skills are.

The character, as stated before, needs to be interested in breaking into the profession of journalism, self-motivated, and in the process of investigating some strange murders in Arizona. Further details will be filled in when you are ready for them.

Here I am, I still need to add equipment though. Tell me what changes I need to make.

Stat rolls

Scarab Sages

You did your sanity almost right. Your Maximum Sanity should be 99.

Also you need to fix your skills to match your current bonuses. Other than that you look pretty good.

May I recomend you buy a car. And as soon as you're ready to enter the game thread, I'll give you some background information concerning the story you are looking into and you can tell me where you want to begin your investigation.

I think I'm ready now.

Synopsis for your motivation:

Overview of the Crimes:

Spoiler:
You have become aware of a rather gruesome set of crimes, all committed by perfect strangers along a route of interstate in Arizona. To summarize, they are as follows.

All of the crimes occurred on Interstate 42, which runs east to west across the state of Arizona. The road runs south of Flagstaff and avoids any major population center.

The first murder occurred about a year ago. The last was only a few days ago. Seven of the eight occurred within a hundred and twenty mile span of the road. It is not quite clear where the other occurred.

The crimes and dates are as follows:

4.12.06 The first of these murders involved a fuel truck and a hitchhiker. About two in the afternoon, Darla Vickers, steered her truck off of the right lane and struck Carlos Richardson just west of Mile Marker 140. When State Troopers arrived five minutes later, Vickers was in the act of trying to eat the remains of Richardson. Vickers had been going west, delivering fuel to gas stations along 42. Vickers resisted arrest and was killed

4.30.06 In the town of Rio Dona, located at exit 97 (Mile Marker 97), Jerome Eloy, a westbound trucker carrying a truck of livestock to Utah, pulled into a gas station and shot Gus DeCortez with a shotgun. Eloy was shot and killed by a local deputy who arrived and found Eloy bent over the body of DeCortez, ripping off chunks of the body with his teeth. The deputy was placed on leave while the shooting was investigated but was subsequently cleared.

7.13.06 Exit 23 (Mile Marker 23) leads to the small town of Santa Darla. A young newlywed couple, Juan and Susan Domingo were discovered dead in their trailer. They had been killed with a knife, skinned, gutted and partially eaten. Police have not released many details but the crime is listed as unsolved.

9.24.06 At the rest stop around Mile Marker 44, Doug Halsbrooke, a computer software salesman, who regularly traveled from his home in New Mexico to California broke into a RV and killed the family of three inside. Phone calls from eyewitnesses insured that the State Troopers were on the scene within twenty minutes. They discovered Mr. Halsbrooke in the process of eating the family. Halsbrooke attacked them with a fishing fillet knife and was shot in the head, though not killed. Halsbrooke is currently in a coma.

12.25.06 At Mile Marker 240, a little after midnight, a large semi drove off the road and struck a large rock. The driver, Glenn Sanchez, was killed on impact. The partially consumed bodies of two men were found within his cab. Police have not revealed the names of the victims.

1.09.07 Again in Santa Darla (exit 23) an old man was killed and partially eaten. While on patrol, Sheriff Carl Clinton saw what he thought to be a suspicious person entering the home of Joseph Tucker, an elderly and long time resident of Santa Darla. The intruder was a trucker named John Wilson. Clinton shot and killed Wilson, who had killed and partially eaten Tucker. Disturbingly, parts of the Tucker’s body were missing and have yet to be found. John Wilson drove produce from California to Texas. While Clinton has claimed publicly that he believes Wilson to also have been responsible for the Domingo murders, subsequent investigations reveal that to not have been the case.

3.27.07 Again in Rio Dona (exit 97), George Smith, carrying lumber, plowed his truck into the local McDonalds. Police found an unconscious Smith inside the cab, along with the partially consumed body of a juvenile girl. Smith was taken into custody and is awaiting trial in nearby Washington, Arizona.

5.15.07 In Washington (exit 128) an axe wielding Juan Clinton (of Santa Darla), who drove a tow truck, servicing areas between Santa Darla and Rio Dona, broke into a local home and killed the family. Washington police shot him over thirty times. The remains of at least two bodies were found in his truck, each bearing signs of having been eaten.

Preinvestigation calls reveal:

Spoiler:
1. The sheriff of Santa Darla has been reported by the State Police to have been acting fairly strangely in their recent interviews with him.

2. The entire section of road is pretty sparsely populated. There is one major truck stop along the route (containing a hotel, restaurant and gas station) and there is a hotel and some restuarants in Washington, but that's about it.

3. There were no traces of narcotics found in any of the murderers, ruling out, in the mind of the medical examiner, that these were drug related crimes.

4. None of the murderers had any significant prior criminal record.

You can decide with the information given where you want to begin. When events warrant it, your PC will be introduced to the other PCs and you can play that however you want.

My publisher usually gives me the "weird" cases (cults, animal mutilations, UFOs) to investigate and debunk.

I was sent to find out the real story behind the murders.

My first step would be to get a room at the hotel in Washington and use it as a base and asking the locals about the murders.

I'll start you here shortly. :)

edit: Here's where you come into the story. Hope you have fun.
