Google leads me to this web site that claims to have the answer.

So long as that was indeed the song played...
I have two copies of that Rachmaninoff CD. It's the 18th variation on a theme from Paganini... a nocturne. It featured very prominently in Somewhere in Time, a film written by my early pen pal creative writing mentor, Richard Matheson (Twilight Zone episodes, Poe screenplay adaptations starring Vincent Price in the 60's, I am Legend).
I also have Paganini's Caprice no. 24 in a minor... the piece I believe it's based on. Not half as sweet. Paganini said he could play the violin piece on guitar and no one believed him, but Eliot Fisk proved it by doing it. If you can find the Eliot Fisk Paganini CD, CHECK IT OUT.

Hi Chris & Jade, thanks for your help. I found that MASH website before but thought that the information was incorrect as the videos on YouTube playing that piece didn't sound like the song from MASH. I'm guessing that the part played on the show is just a few bars in length.
Hrm... You've got me so curious.

Hopefully your curiosity will lead you to the tune in question. Thanks again for your help.
