I'm looking to start running the Heroes of Rokugan "living" style campaign here on the Paizo PbP boards. I'll do a new thread for each module, and players/characters can rotate in and out with each adventure, but I'd like to try to build a fairly stable core of PCs to maintain continuity from one module to the next. I will need at least four players for each mod, and no more than six.
The setting of the game is several centuries after the Four Winds Era, but little of significance has changed in terms of the society or the Clans. (For full details, see here. Note that the timeline diverges from the CCG a fair amount, beginning from roughly the start of Lotus Edition.) Note that, because it is a global campaign, the game uses Certificates of Honor ("certs") to handle certain rewards. I plan to distribute these after each mod, but doing so will require some snail-mail means of contacting you. I will provide an email address at which I can be reached, so we can discuss this privately as needed.
Characters must be beginning level characters (see here for character creation rules and guidelines), and players must be willing to post at least once per day. I will bump this thread each time a new module is ready to begin, in case we get new arrivals.
We'll start with "The Tournament of the Topaz Champion" in the year 1499!

I was one of the players of the first, very ill-fated Topaz Championship PbP, and would like to take another stab at this. My profile is still up, but i have not had the chance to check it against your CG guidelines.
Since the character is pretty much "unplayed", I'd like to just make the necessary adjustments, and go with it. Unless you have objections, of course.

No, that would be fine with me. Just glancing quickly through the profile (and not checking the math, at this point), it looks like you'd have to drop or find points to pay for your dojo - HoR requires 2 CP for dojo benefits - drop the heritage bonus, and change Bitter Betrothal to something else; it's a restricted Disad in the campaign, because the Campaign Admin likes to make people work for their marriages. If you want to keep it, though, one means of possibly doing so would be to write a character fiction and email it in to him. I don't know how much of your concept is wrapped up in that aspect of your history, though.
Well, we have two... are there two more out there somewhere?

Like Michael, I would be interested in giving this a shot, but I've not played L5R, nor do I own the book (the closest I have is the D&D Oriental Adventures sourcebook). If you'd be willing to have another newbie, and if I can find the gameplay mechanics, I'd like to join. The setting information looks very cool. :)

Almost there...!
For those of you who are new, if you want a little primer on L5R (regardless of whether we manage to pull this off), take a look at this - it's a PDF of a rules quickstart I often hand out when I get new people involved in the game, and should cover a lot of the basic ideas.

Thanks Shisumo, but I can't seem to access it. When I open the link it asks me to continue and then states the page is not available. Maybe it's just me though?
Also like Mishi I have the D&D Oriental Campaign Setting book (and played in a Rokugan game) but from what I gather L5R and the D&D ruleset are two different creatures entirely. I've also read some of the novels in case that matters.
Finally if it's helpful at all I'm probably going to go with a Crane bushi, most likely Kakita because iaijutsu=win.
Is it possible to e-mail the document?

Mishi |

I've played 7th Sea a couple of times before - I'm not an expert on the system, but I know the basics of it. :)
I was actually thinking bushi as well, as I thought that would be easier to get the hang of the game with rather than a magic user (that, and I liked the sound of the Unicorn clan battle maidens :) ). If you really need a shugenja though, I can have a try.

OK I'll get to work on creating a character, might be a few days though, I have some school work to finish up to clear an Incomplete to get my degree.
I thought this was a OA one at first, I'll have to figure out if I have access to a 3e set of books, if not I know I have access to 2e and then I can use the conversion guide. Yeah I was checking out the info.

No problem. It's the end of the semester for me too. Maybe we'll get another player or two before we get moving...

We've got two complete novices going here, so don't sweat it too much. The Topaz Championship is designed to get people up to speed on the rules.

Perhaps you didn't notice, but we've only got one person in the thread so far who does have the books (not counting me)? If you want to come on board, come on board and we'll figure something out. You can start with the "quickstart" linked in the thread already...

If your not full up yet than I would like to make another attempt with this character. I think he is finally getting over that hangover from the August PBP. Let me know what changes need to be made if you would.
That would be fine - and if Ubermench decides to come along and everyone else is still up for it, that would actually be six, which would fill us up.
Looking quickly, here's the issues I see: Heritage rolls aren't allowed in HoR (that's the big one), so you'd have to give all that back. Painful, I know - you got some good rolls. Sworn Enemy isn't allowed unless you want to take it for a major NPC of the setting, which means it's pretty much always worth 5 pts, and still probably not worth it. ;) Neither Great Destiny nor Kaiu Blade is allowed at character creation, though I'll spoil things just a teensy bit and say that winning the Topaz Championship earns you the right to buy Great Destiny if you want it. ;) I'm not sure where Vanity comes from...? And, as I mentioned for Ume above, dojo benefits cost 2 CP in Heroes of Rokugan, which nicely cancels out the cost reduction yours is giving you. (sigh)
Still willing to give it a go, even with all that?

Cool, If there is still room i would like to play a Mantis bushi.
If yes I'll just use the Mantis bushi from the quick start. Just let me know if I need to add anything to the character.

You mean this guy?
Well, his TNtbH is actually 21 rather than 18, but otherwise, he looks pretty good.
Also, head on over to the discussion thread and say hi.

Man. Missed the boat on this one... I wish Paizo had a Private Message box heh.
Hold that thought. After we wrap up the first module, I expect we will have at least one empty slot - unless Ubermench changes his mind and decides to drop back in, you could get in for the second module.

Arcmagik |

I would be interested. I been following the recent movement in the pbp, and see that there is a Crab, Crane, Unicorn, and Lion for Samurai. I haven't looked in to where the Shugenja comes from but since the above are all represented I would probably go for a Dragon from the Mirumoto Bushi School or one of the Tattooed Order.
I noticed that you are using the 3eR rules which I don't have or plan on getting as I don't think there are significant changes from the original 3e rules to warrant me buying a completely new book or maybe they are but AEG are to tight-lipped about what exactly changed for me to worry about it.
I will keep an eye on things until it nears time to see if I will be able to get into the game.

DM Shisumo |

I will certainly take it.
Ubermench has first claim, so I'd like to give him another day or so before we give the final thumbs up and bring you in. In the meantime, are you still thinking about a Mirumoto or a Tattooed Man, or does something else strike your fancy now?
Also, have you read/played Treacherous Terrain before?

DM Shisumo |

If I get the spot I just wanted to say that I am still interested in a Mirumoto Bushi but I dunno that I will actually be part of the Mirumoto family yet.
Looks like Ubermench is passing on this, based on his silence, so you're in. Let's do this! Drop by the discussion thread and we'll start nailing down numbers.
