Now that the contest is about to be officially underway, I wanted to let everyone know that I wont be making any more specific posts about what is good or bad to do or what we look for or dont. That is only fair. Everyone has access to all the things I have said, and all the things we judges said last year. If you want to review that stuff you can (and probably should). But I wont be making specific comments as the round progresses. I will happily join in general discussion. But if you are waiting for me to post more stuff, dont bother. It wont happen.
Why? Its the only fair way to do it.
I dont want someone to submit early and then read something I post and say they would have changed their submission. Or I dont want someone to delay submitting hoping to glean more nuggets of wisdom from me or the other judges as the round progresses.
So with that, no more specific comments from me. Other than this:
I wish everyone who enters the best of luck! I can't wait to read the submissions. And I promise you that the judges will be fair and unbiased, that we will give 110% of our effort to this and that we will do our steady best to find the top submissions to create the best and most deserving field to go forward for the rest of the competition.
Good luck everyone and I look forward to hours and hours of submission evaluation!
Clark

I intend to review stuff as it comes in to the best of my ability. If you get behind the curve, catching up on 800 items is a drag :) You can glean the process from our prior posts. I'm not going to violate my new "no advice rule" right in the very thread where I announce it :)
It wouldn't surprise me if you received a few more than 800 this year ;>
Merry Christmas ;>

Clark,
Should my tribe try sneaking into the Fortress of Doom!!! under the cover of daylight and killing everyone inside or should we try singing kobold opera to get them to surrender?

Fortress of Doom!!! is trademark of The Evil Overlord and use of it is not a challenge to their trademark.

Oho, wish me happy birthday! Today is my birthday and for my birthday treat, I am going to indulge in a mild panic attack now that I have submitted my wondrous item (I seem to remember a DUNGEON Editor doing the same every time he released the latest edition) for dissection and critique.
Hey, I may not win, but I can sleep soundly knowing that:
a) I have thought this item through carefully.
b) I have made sure that the submission is under 200 words
c) I have edited it
d) I have edited it some more
e) I have edited it some more
f) The item name is appropriate
and most importantly:
g) I gave it my best shot.
All the best people! Thanks again Judges and Paizo for this opportunity.

That one right there is the most important one. You never know what people will like and what they'll hate, what will make instant sense and what will confuse people, but the one thing you can control is whether you feel like you gave it your best shot.
One of the rounds last year I was really rushed for time because of a bunch of stuff IRL, but I managed to make it through even though I didn't feel like I took my best shot. Pretty much every other round, though, I felt like I did, even up to and including my "James Bond movie meets Al-Qadim" adventure proposal. I didn't win, but I felt like I took my best shot and let the votes fall where they may.
You can't regret how other people like what you did, but you can regret how YOU like what you did, so if you've marinated on it and thought about it and done your due diligence of research and come up with something that you think is pretty awesome, then that's what you do. Maybe it flies and maybe it dies, but you can walk away content (though a little disappointed) knowing you took your best shot.
Not that I'm complaining about finishing in the Top 4 last year, but it would be fun to revisit the contest again this year with a contest worth of hindsight. I hope everybody has a great time!
P.S. Happy Birthday!

I, however, will be more than happy to give advice based on my years of experience failing at Pathfinder Superstar entries!
This is only the second Superstar, and it's too early to have failed at it yet. How then can you have years, plural, of experience failing them? Have you traveled into the future and failed the Superstar 2010 - 2015, just to beef up on your experience at failing them?
If so, how'd I do on those years?
