Morons. I've never understood that mentality.

I know. Same as people who write Viruses and other assorted nasties. What could possibly motivate them to do that to people that they'll never even know they did it to?

Still, they keep me in a job...

Gah! WTF?! Why would anyone do this? Hey -- if anyone out here has the chops to help Nick figure out how to prevent this from happening again, your help would be dearly appreciated. Neither Nick nor I are skilled in that way. Consider this my plea for help!

Speaking of Sinister Adventures, has the Razor Coast shipped yet? Been looking for a copy in stores and on the internet but can't find one.

As for hackers, I'd like to find the person(s) and hold 'em for Nick to do some hacking of his own! Sick bastards.

Oh that just so sucks!

First thing I would do is contact your server provider. It was their computer that was hacked into after all.

Without knowing specifics can't really help..

But Hackers like taken advantage of un-patched exploits.. Most hackers don't have the skill to really do much damage to fully Patched systems.

Most likely what ever server the page is on just needs to be patched..

If he is using a company to run his page he should contact the administrators of the system and explain to them what is going on so they can fix it and make the system more secure.

Just looked at the Page... Tell Nick to contact me...We met at GenConUK.. Tell him it is the Air Force guy who's job is Computer Network Defense.. I took the hackers info and will look him up to see if I can get any info on common stuff he uses if it is available.

Also if he can give me what software he is using on the server and the versions I can find the exploits for them.

I won't be able to get the the info to him until after work hours.

He can contact me at dragnmoon at gmail dot com

Edit: Also I can't make any promises... Hard to work on things when you are not hands on..

I've pre-ordered my copy last June and it still hasn't been released yet.

Oh yeah, sorry. My bad! There I was trying to hack my way into the Zimbabwean Space Agency's system, and next thing I know...BAM...I'm in Sinister's site by accident. Oops.

Ugh. Yep, back up and running. Hopefully it stays that way now.

PDFs of Razor Coast should all go out aroudn Christmas, and the book should ship in January, unless we have some more unexpected delays.

Nick, I am glad you are up and running again. Nick, have you talked to Vic and Gary over here at Paizo? They might have some tips that might help you out.

Contributor

I'll hit them up for advice, for snizzle, but I think my hoster and I just took the necessary steps to avoid this kind of hacking again. We'll see though. :-)

How you doing Sharoth? Long time no chat! I can't wait to get my internet up and running in the UK so I can get on the chats again! Argh!

I think needs to look into getting a new server host.

Paizo Employee Chief Creative Officer, Publisher

That would be my recommendation.

Paizo Employee Chief Technical Officer

And less hackable software (assuming it's not provided by the host).

And a gang of firewall casting pirateninjas guarding the place...

I popped him an email suggesting both a different hoster and better software a while back, but since he moved to Pett-land, the man is harder to get your hands on than the communal hallucinogenic toad at a Greatful Dead reunion.

But just as tasty!

I don't understand how the hosts haven't sorted it out by now, or at least replaced the stupid freakish big-handed face with a placeholder. It's been like that a week and for a paying customers website, I don't see how that's acceptable.

Liberty's Edge

Nic really needs to get a new host for his site.

His current one sucks. Hard.

I would suggest www.carpathiahost.com. Good service, great price.

Contributor

Hey All!

Thanks for the support guys. Ugh. I definitely need a new host. Thanks for the recommendations. This happened at the absolute worst time, as I'm right in throes of starting a new term, and spending every other waking hour finalizing the edits to Razor Coast. I'll try to get this all sorted out pronto.

I need a button I can press that will track hackers back to their source...and then spray acid in their lap.

Liberty's Edge

I seriously don't know why they don't execute them.

Sweet Jesus what did you do to piss that guy off?

Anyway, I have a hackeriffic friend who tests security for commercial sites, I can try and get a freebie off him if you can't find anyone over there. It might be a good idea to get... errr... probed as it were, before running her again.

Nicolas Logue wrote:

What you need is not just a new host. You need someone to look after your site, be that a new host (that will be expensive), an employee, or yourself.

Sinister Adventures is powered by a popular open source software package called Joomla. As with all open source software, each new release fixes security issues; since the code is open, the very day a new release is available, hackers try to exploit sites that have not been updated. They have all the details needed to do that in the package update. It is mightily easy to find sites running Joomla using Google. It is just a matter of time before a site that has not been updated becomes the target of a guy who wants to play fun.

Looking at Joomla 1.5's version history, new releases are available every few weeks (sometimes two months, sometimes three weeks). You need someone to subscribe to Joomla's RSS feed and to update your site every time a new release is available, be that yourself, a friend, or a host that will make you pay for this service.

If you're not currently updated to version 1.5.9 of Joomla, you need look no further than updating using the package suited to your current install. If you are running 1.5.9, well… then there's something else going on (such as an outdated version of the forum software, or of another software package you're running on your web site).

I suspected you Jeff...I just didn't think you would learn Turkish just to pull this stunt off - that's dedication. ;-)

Thanks also for the suggestions everyone, I'm passing them on to my web advisor and weighing my options. Sadly, I have a killerific week, so I won't be able to tackle this until the weekend. Good thing is though we got the site back up at least - mostly. The forums still don't work, but we'll work on getting that sorted too.

Thanks for the support everyone!

Liberty's Edge

Hope it all works out Nick - I'm still hanging out for Razor Coast!

If you're at a loose end on Monday nights, I would recommend tuning in to the 18:30 slot (GMT/BST) on Monday nights on Radio 4. They are currently running a series of Just a Minute and although whatever occupies the slot only runs for 6 Mondays in a row, the series is usually fairly good comedy.

Hope you get sorted out soon. When are you coming to Birmingham??? (Okay, I had to give it a try.... :D)
