Miniature Playing Surface Mats etc.

Miniatures

I have been using wet erase square grid mats for several years now and I was thinking about upgrading to something new. I am a bit out of touch with what's new for miniature playing surfaces though, so I thought I would try and get some unput here.

As many know, I've moved on to super-heroes vs. D&D; with that in mind let's talk playing surfaces. Here's what I would like....

1. Something that I can add all the detail I want on.
2. Something that isn't messy.
3. Has a very large playing surface (approx. 4' x 6' in size). I would be ok with buying two mats or two whatevers to cover such a large area.
4. Something that might be good for overal superhero play.
5. Expense.....well I am more interested in the above factors first, so give me a variety to choose from.

One thing I would like to have is something that could "somehow" handle miniature use for flying superheroes. I know this is propably impossible but I'm looking for ideas. How can I accurately measure distance upwards between characters (as in this her is 100' in the air and this one is 80' feet in the air and 45' to the left", well you most likely get the idea. Does anyone have any suggestions here as well.
