Steampunk World Info

Other RPGs

Hey everyone. I just bought the Steampunk OGL book as a gift for my wife, but there isn't much for setting.

I was wondering if anyone knows of any resources for a Steampunk world to set a game in that wouldn't involve buying a completely new RPG or writing ALL my own material from scratch.

Scarab Sages

I think there is a GURPs Steampunk book.
Castle Falkenstein is a good book too. (A bit of fantasy in there too.)

I think we even had a thread here just like this.. but I didn't check...

Thanks Fray. I'll take a look at those games. I was hoping someone had something for free online that they had already developed, or at least enough world info of another game out there that I wouldn't have to buy anything.

There's also Iron Kingdoms (from Privateer Press) and my own Tales of Zobeck. Beyond that, not a lot of steampunk out there.

Well, there's Victoriana, but it's not OGL.

Thanks Mr. Baur, this looks really interesting. I may just have to pick it up :)

In OGL, there's also Etherscope if you don't mind a little cyberpunk and supernatural horror in your steampunk.

You may wish to check out the Imperial Age line from Adamant Entertainment. Its for d20 Modern, so its easily adaptable to any d20 system. There is a lot of good stuff. It split into a bunch of separate pdfs so you can cherry pick what you want and its actually pretty easy on the wallet.

Yep. He beat me to it. I wrote most of the magic stuff for the line (Magick, Grimoire, and Faeries) and if you are including any of that I would be glad to help. Both Magick and Faeries come with some short campaign settings - about 3 or 4 in each.

Very cool. Thanks for the info. And thanks for the offer of helping out. I'll have to check those out.

There is one called Fair Empire that is common to both, in Magick you get a discussion of how magic might work in a fairy dominated British Empire while in Faeries you get a couple of pages of more detailed setting, an advanced class, and few adventure ideas, and a table of comparitive ranks for the Imperial Military. Thats the most likely one for what you are talking about. Its largely going to depend on how much magic you want in a campaign. Overall the setting pieces are more detailed in Faeries, while the examples in Magick are simply to show how the new rules could be applied in different ways.

I have most of the PDFs in this line and really enjoy them. Good stuff.

Iron Kingdoms has an anime steampunk feel as well. I really like Tales of Zobeck, one of my best buys this year, in a year when I can't buy much heh....

Cool that your wife likes Steampunk too! My wife does too, we wish we could afford to do Steampunk costumes for Comic Con....I'm reading Perdido Street Station currently, and I have the Vandermeer "Steampunk" compilation that's next up on deck. Wish there was more out there...

I think you'll really like _Tales of Zobeck_, but then I was a contributor to it...

There' also _Ave Molech_ from Morbid Press...

and it's not d20, but there's _Unhallowed Metropolis_, which walks a line from Steampunk to Horror/Steampunk, but probably a lot on the Horror side. It's still awesome.

And there's a SteamPunk convention in Seattle this year! SteamCon will have Tim Powers (Anubis Gates) as its GoH.

Hey, I'm *going*. :)

Sorry about the thread-necromancy, but . . .

Hey, ShadowPavement, have you heard of the Forgotten Futures compilation?

It's got a rock-simple core RPG system (which is not the reason to pursue the game) surrounded by about 3.6 metric tons of Victorian/Edwardian era "setting material". Awesome source for a steampunk game, all the while reflecting a lot of actual terrestrial-history.

Forgotten Futures is billed as "a roleplaying game of Science Fantasy" (that odd genre of fiction Verne, Wells, Doyle, and the like wrote). Technically, science fantasy includes all those "science fiction" tales from the past that the future has not borne true. So, some of Asimov's early work could count. But then, I'm kind of fascinated with that strange flavor of fiction...

Anyway, I hope this gives your wife something to chew on while reading over the Steampunk OGL book. How did this book turn out, btw?

Off topic: Wolfgang - did you have a good time at SteamCon?

I've bought my ticket, but the con isn't until October 10. So, ask me again in about a month.

It is looking pretty sweet, with gaming, readings, masquerade, etc.

GAH!!!! My ex-wife hated Seattle that's why I left there...she threatened to divorce me if I didn't get transferred...

Man I wanna go to SteamCon!!! And PaizoCon...and all the other kick arse places in Washington...man I miss it up there...

Thanks Jean. I'll have to check it out when I'm home and don't have the internet filters making my life difficult.

My wife and I would love to go to Steamcon. Alas, the trip from Maine to Seattle is a long and expensive one and my inlaws wouldn't take our boy for that long.

Though my wife is running a small gaming con this winter (our second) and has planned a Steampunk Luncheon for that Saturday.

Understood - the FF stuff used to be freebies from their website. I long ago ordered one of the CD compilations, and they've sent me updated PDFs often.

I'm as happy with their service and materials as I am with Paizo's. High marks!

Ah, if only I were within a thousand miles! Sounds great!

Is your wife sticking with historical Earth (with appropriate steampunk tweaks) for her games, or is she cooking something original up?

Very interested in hearing more.

She's staying with historical earth for this one. There isn't much in the way of steampunk costuming this way and part of her doing this is to encourage others to give it a try.

If you can't sew, costumes are pretty pricey. It's too late now, but next year...if you're close. Maine Renaissance Faire may have Victorian costumes. Nerf guns and Super Soakers with a little paint and glue if you wanted to be armed. Nearly anything else can be purchased at a hardware store or scavenged at a scrap yard.

Pardon the thread-necromancy, but I was curious how the 'Con went?

Did you have fun?
