Sandros picks up the dagger, but finding it goblin-sized (Small), he hands it to Royl, noting her interest and that it would be more useful to her. That seems to make sense. A quick wipe later (Appraise d10+2=12) she notices that though the dagger is rusty, it is of good workmanship and quite serviceable (masterwork, even).

Sorry, that was a simulpost. Sandros is perfectly happy to pass it over.

Noticeably relieved, Neras nods and rises, saying that he will do whatever he can to help. He hopes to uncover some information on Kabbal Sharn, and possibly even a cure for the Taint, but he warns Sandros that his financial means are limited. He wishes you the best of luck on your new-found quest, and adds as an afterthought, his voice almost trailing off into a muttering: "After all, blood is thicker than water." But he brightens up somewhat and even offers you his hand as you rise to leave.

Spoiler:
Sandros waves away the warning about money. "I have no intention of draining your coffers for my search or my treatment. If you can tell me what I need to know, I will find the money I need to make use of it."

He gladly takes Neras' hand as he readies himself to leave, and Sandros departs the governor's residence with a small, strange sense of kinship, and even a newfound spark of hope.

We're missing a few initiatives, but I've got enough to handle the surprise round (no luck with those Perception checks).

Sandros warily proceeds, cursing the clattering bones. As he reaches the top of the stairs, he notices that the room is approximately 30 feet across and 60 feet wide (for tactical purposes, stretching from E15 to E21 to Q21 to Q15). There are two visible exits, a passage stretching northwards (ascending numbers) from J21 to L21 and one to the east Q16-19.

Flanking each of the exits are some sort of natural platforms with walls, reaching to a height of 18 feet. The floor is set with a mosaic pattern that forms a sort of carpet of stones in the middle of the room, stretching away into the north and east passages.

Suddenly a haggard-looking woman with dead eyes, grey skin and sharp teeth, obviously a ghoul, emerges from hiding in a natural alcove to the northwest and charges at Sandros, slashing wildly but clumsily with her sharp claws. A silver bracelet glitters on her arm, a remnant of happier days.

As Sandros reaches G16, the ghoul charges into G17 and misses. Assuming the same marching order, Rana would be in G12, Grond in I12, Proteus in G11 and Royl in H10.

Uh, thanks to both of you! I had no intention of taking it from Sandros, but thanks. I need all the help I can get!

As soon as Sandros is ready to relinquish the lead, Grond will step up. (Darkvision)

For now, Grond follows silently behind, but mentions to Sandros that he fears a tripwire ahead, and that Sandros should remember that no matter how foul and stupid orcs might be, they are always cunning.

He retrieves his javelin from the impaled rat, cuts off an ear as a souvenir, and watches Sandros stoop to pick up the rusty dagger. That is hilarious, as I too wanted the dagger -and was going to use Grond wanting a better door-stop than the 12gp silvered dagger he almost lost last time! Lol, but with ALL of us interested, there just HAS to be something special about it!

So, Dancing Lights are up ahead with Sandros and Light is back here with Proteus, is that correct?

Oops, surprise combat round! Hmm, surprised ok. Here are any and all rolls I may use:

Init: 3+3=6
Perception: 12+5=17
Stealth: 7+7=14
Melee attack: 2+5=7
Ranged Attack: 2+3=5

If possible, Grond will charge the ghoul on his turn. If that is not possible, Grond will move to a shadowy corner of the room and hide in shadows.

Just to make sure I'm understanding, "north" will be down on this map, correct? That would put the Q passage on the west wall, I believe. I'm assuming that the stairs end at F-J/15 and that Sandros is the only PC not currently on the stairs.

Just forewarning the DM: "Natural platforms with walls" I don't get. If we survive, I'll need to ask for more information there. And I will definitely be interested in the design of the mosaic on the floor. I like the imagery, and I don't know what the design is yet!

On her turn, Roylenna will try to hustle to her left 15' to J12 requiring an Acrobatics check to make it in one move:

Acrobatics (1d20+5=10)

Unfortunately, her footing slips and it's all she can do to maintain her balance. Any other action she had in mind is lost. Suggesting that either she fell and spent her second move action to get up, or her single move action was turned into a double move action when she lost her balance, unless the DM prefers a different resolution to missing the check.

EDIT: Oh, and the Dancing Lights are still at G-H/9-10 (one in each square). Not sure how many rounds would have passed, but they are good for ten total.

Female Halfling Sorcerer (celestial)

Second round actions:

Spoiler:
Realizing she's left the lights behind, Roylenna will move them forward to hover over the combatants (unless someone reminds her that they seemed effective deterrants for the last ghoul we met, then she'll "attack" with them) as her move action. She will attempt a Heavenly Fire attack against the ghoul for her standard action -- or against another foe if one is not in melee.

Female Halfling Sorcerer (celestial)

Does this help, or is it too much?

Initiatives, positions, actions for Round 1:

Sandros 22 G16 pending
Roylenna 20 H10 moving to J12
Proteus 17 G11 delaying
Grond 6 I12 pending

Rana ? G12 pending
Ghoul ? G17 pending

It looks like Sandros will have a go before Roylenna nearly falls down and Proteus brings the divine goodness to bear.

While we await further actions from Sandros and Rana, I'd like to ask for a Reflex save for Royl and an Acrobatics check for Grond. Also I wonder for how long Proteus delays, but maybe that will sort itself out.

“I specifically said I did not want to go back to the crypt!” Sandros shouts plaintively, his rapier dancing in front of him. Sparks fly from the thing’s claws as he parries her away. Seeing an opening, he thrusts with an almost textbook precision, then sidesteps to F17, clearing the way for the others to attack. He tosses Rana a sideways glance, gesturing with his off-hand in a “right this way” movement.

As the whip attack goes wide, Sandros smirks visibly, for just a moment.

I think Rana needs to make an Acrobatics check to get up for that short sword attack next round.

Male Human (mostly) Ex-cleric and Grumpy Cat

I'm not at home for the moment so I don't have access to my books, but I'll try to resolve what I can.

Sandros stabs the creature right through the lung, enough to give any living creature pause, but apart from a wheezing sound, the creature in undeterred. She throws herself at him and sinks her teeth in his neck, barely missing the jugular (6 points of damage and a Fort save, please).

Roylenna tries to move into a better position but trips and goes tumbling down the stairs(damage resolved later). Seeing the danger of rushing up the stairs, Proteus casts Guidance on Rana and carefully makes his way up to G14 or else risks sharing Royl's fate if he moves faster. Rana climbs to H14 for the same reason but fails to engage the ghoul with his whip. Dropping it he gets ready to draw his shortsword instead. Sorry, but you can't take a 5' step, attack and move in the same round, especially not in difficult terrain. Throwing caution to the wind Grond takes the stairs in powerful strides and charges the ghoul (moving to H16), but his sword goes wide.

Round 2 is up, first Sandros, then the ghoul and the rest of you. Roylenna is at the base of the stairs, with an action left to either stand up or heal herself.

Black Tom wrote:

Correct. Rana would drop the whip if he missed and was in danger of being tripped himself.

Sandros wrote:

Looking at Sandros with concern as the ghoul take a chunk out of his neck Rana advances on the ghoul with a hungry grin. "Are you gonna be ok?" he asks as he steps in closer to face the foul undead.

Sandros staggers back in pain, clutching at the bleeding wound in his neck. "Aaaugh!" he shouts.

Fortitude save (1d20+2=6)
(singing) Fever! in the morning, fever all through the night... she gives me fever with her kisses...

Still reeling, Sandros steps around the ghoul again, trying to expose her back to the assailants on the stairs. He attacks once more, trying to ignore the weakening sense of blood pouring down his jacket.

Once the creature dies, Proteus carefully makes his way down the stairs to make sure that Royl is okay. He helps her back up to the room where the group waits. Proteus moves over to Sandros bringing Royl with him. Holding out his glowing fetish, he says, "Vitae" (channel positive energy - take back 5 hp).

He then takes a look at the gaping wound on Sandros neck. He winks at Sandros, "Nice hickey. You should stay away from girls who bite." He pulls out his healing kit and attempts to treat for ghoul fever (heal check to treat disease 18+7+2=27).

Sandros submits to Proteus' ministrations gratefully, feeling the skin knit back together on his neck, leaving only a garish bruise, much like the hickey Proteus joked of. "My thanks once again, my friend," he says, gripping Proteus' shoulder. "You have given me many reasons to prove that I was right to welcome you to our group - and I have given you too many chances to offer that proof."

He bends over the ghoul's body, pulling the bracelet from its wrist. "It's the least you can do for me," he tells the body, a little defensively. He then starts poking around the rest of the area.

Sight-based Perception, as Aid Another to help Grond search (1d20+2=14)

Stealth (untrained) (1d20+4=18)
Initiative (1d20+4=5)

I would like to "take 20" (PHB pp.65) on all room searches. I don't think we are in too much of a hurry, and what with all the healing etc. 2 minutes post combat per room seems ok, right? So my total Perception with Sandros' aid should be 27, as the default highest perception possible when unthreatened, is this not correct? And can it also be used to 'stealth'?

Grond snaps his fingers as yet another treasure is snatched from under his very nose. "All right!" he loudly whispers, "We need me up front, ahead of the light. My natural benefits will aid us all." he says, controlling himself.

Grond will search the room and then stealth as he moves to whichever exit the group chooses, always staying 10' in front of the 30' light from Proteus. He will wave the fireflies away if Roylenna buzzes them about his ears.

Rolls:
(Taking 20)
Perception: 27
Stealth: 27

Otherwise:

Stealth: 16+7=23
Initiative: 11+3+14

You can take 20 on searching the room, but when it comes to spotting foes in hiding and stealth you are going to have to roll.

Regarding Royl's damage from falling down the stairs, I am pretty sure that Proteus's channeling was enough to take care of it, since most of it was nonlethal.

Roylenna quietly agrees. "Yes, thank you, Proteus." She moves to the center of the room, moving the Dancing Lights around the room where they might aid those searching the room, especially Proteus and Rana considering their need for light.

Are the platforms by the exits accessible from the room here? Or are they entered from openings in the wall? Any markings on them? And is there anything that stands out on the mosaic on the floor?

I don't mind the time, but we always played that each Search check applied to a 5' square. So you are looking at 2 minutes per square, not per room. I have no problem with taking the time, even with that ruling in mind.

Roylenna tries to put the Dancing Lights where they are the most helpful for the other searchers.

Glad to hear it -- much more than that, and this little girl would have to be carried back up the stairs. Not that anyone would have trouble doing so, but that would be even more humiliating.

The balconies seem rather crude, possibly made by magic. There is no visible means of access from the floor nor any openings behind them.

There is nothing of interest on the floor, except for the mosaic, that forms a sort of red carpet to the north and east. It seems to be purely decorative, with a flowery pattern.

Roylenna is indeed correct. Taking 20 on searching the room will take you at least 20 minutes. And as I don't have Excel at home, I'm afraid I numbered the map the wrong way. That means that the exits are to the north and to the east. The latter is where the rat was heading.

I'm going to be obtuse to make sure I've pictured this correctly. If we are not changing any of the coordinates for the room, I have a long room with three exits. The stairs are at the top of the map, but they are coming from the southeast (upper left). A hall(?) exits the room from the rough middle of the north (down) wall. A second hall(?) exits the room from the rough middle of the west (right) wall.

Am I close?

He points to the exits. "Which way shall we proceed, then? Into the unknown?" He points his rapier to the north. "Or toward whatever squished that rat like a grape?" He points instead through the east exit.

What can we tell looking down each hallway? Any differneces? Otherwise I suggest following the rats trail, whay not! Yes. The trouble is that since I started numbering in the lower left, my map is a mirror image of yours. That means that the entrance stairs are actually coming from SW and the exits are N and E (more a hallway than a hall). My proposal is that we reverse my numbering, so that 21 should actually be 41 and 1 would be 61. The outline of the map is correct, so I hope that this won't change too much.

Cleaning up some other stuff, Royl did indeed suffer 5 points of nonlethal damage falling down the stairs, with Proteus's channeling took care of, and you all get 100 xp for the ghoul.

Except that the north passage is somewhat shorter (40 feet) before giving way to a room of some kind, the greatest difference is the pile of squashed rat that Grond thinks he can make out at the edge of his vision, at 60' of distance. Moving in that direction to find out what caused the rat's demise, Grond suddenly finds himself locked in a staring contest with an ogre, club raised. Though the bits of rat brain clinging to the club brings back singularly unpleasant memories, the ogre doesn't seem particularly aggressive (for an ogre).

Since Grond sees it before it sees you, he has a surprise round to act before anything else happens. I am assuming that Grond has his falchion drawn and searching the passage as he advances as stealthily as he can.

The hallway narrows down to 10' running from Q16-19 to CC17-19. The rat is at CC18. As Grond looks eyes with the ogre Grond is behind a corner at W17 and the ogre is at HHII1718. There is a sprung tripwire at BB17-19

(The revised coordinates would change 16 to 46 and 19 to 43.)

I have a simpler proposal. Your map goes from lower left up and right, anybody's spreadsheets will go from upper left down and right. As long as we use the actual coordinates rather than compass directions, we should have no issues -- our maps will look different, but as you say, they are mirror images and should be correct, relatively speaking. I think trying to change coordinates in midstream will cause more confusion than it is worth. Glad to know where the confusion lay, though.

Oh, I thought the Initiative you provided in the post regarding searching the rooms was your next init. That's what I used in my summary post earlier.

M Half Orc 1 Rogue

My bad.

No worries. I'm just hoping the attack roll hits and you get a second attack before the beast loses his flat-footed condition. I'm assuming you've got sneak attack going on, of course.

Ironically, this is one time when Sandros might have tried diplomacy over combat. (sigh) Will we ever get our kill/talk signals worked out?

As Grond sees the ogre he instinctively raises his javelin and hurls it at the hulking brute, but the distance is too great to aim with accuracy -2 attack and no sneak possible. The javelin bounces harmlessly off the ogre's armor. The ogre roars in fury.

Round 1 is up.

Proteus hears the ogre scream with rage from the javelin attack. He quickly lifts up his holy symbol and reaches an open palm up towards the heavens. "Benedictus Asclepius," and holy courage fills his allies. Bless: +1 to all attack rolls from allies, +1 to fear saving throws.

M Half Orc 1 Rogue

Oops, didnt realize Grond was not within short range. (Sigh) I also noticed the 'not too aggresive" stance of the ogre, but I mean, he's an ogre after all. Chaotic evil? But ya, mebbe I shouldn't have thrown down ((shrug))

Grond readies another javelin, but will wait to hurl until the ogre is within 30.'

I'm going with the "mirror image" map rather than trying to convert everything. I'm trying to wrap my mind around the locations for the ogre encounter.

The hallway narrows down to 10' running from Q16-19 to CC17-19. The rat is at CC18. As Grond looks eyes with the ogre Grond is behind a corner at W17 and the ogre is at HHII1718. There is a sprung tripwire at BB17-19

From the above, it sounds like the ogre occupies squares H17, H18, I17, and I18. That would put the ogre behind us at the top of the stairs. When you count out to the far right, did you by any chance go X, Y, Z, AA, BB, CC, DD, ...? In the spreadsheet, it goes X, Y, Z, AA, AB, AC, AD, etc, which would explain my confusion. I'm going to assume you did the former as I try to map this out.

I show Grond at W17, as stated, and the ogre at AH-AI/17-18, a range of 55'. From the previous discussion, it appears that Sandros and Rana are 25' feet behind Grond with Proteus and Royl following, maybe Rana in R17, Sandros in R18, Proteus in Q18, Roylenna in Q17?

Yes, that's exactly what I did. The ogre is in AH-AI17-18. I tried to give your positions as stated, but the messageboard ate my post.

Proteus calls upon the power of Ascelpius to help you stand firm and strike true, while Grond readied a javelin to throw as the ogre comes within 30 feet but since it won't be flat-footed at that point, no sneak damage.

Royl and Sandros to go.

In the shadows cast by Royl's lights and Proteus' holy symbol, Sandros can just make out the hulking form of the ogre. He grits his teeth as he watches Grond's javelin fly, then winces as the shaft skitters sideways. Oh, this is going to hurt...

Sandros declares total defense - AC 23 until the beginning of my next turn - and then moves up next to Grond, at W18.

Female Halfling Sorcerer (celestial)

At the sound of the roar, Roylenna moves the Dancing Lights forward (they should normally be hovering above her and Proteus) to a point forward of Grond AC-AD/17-18. She moves forward to T19 to see what's going on better.

Male Human (mostly) Ex-cleric and Grumpy Cat

Sandros moves forward to W18 with his rapier weaving a complicated pattern in front of him. Roylenna moves her flying torches forward to illuminate the scene and follows Sandros at a distance, moving to T19.

This battle is tough enough as it is, so I'm going to NPC Rana so that he won't lose an action.

Seeing Sandros advance, Rana snaps out of his stupor and follows him, drawing both his swords and taking a fighting stance at V18.

As the ogre charges, Grond's second javelin hits it in the stomach, but it keeps going anyway. In a bout of rage it brings his club down on Grond´s head with a fearsome blow. Stunned, Grond falls backwards and blacks out before he hits the floor. (16 points of damage, ouch!)

I'd like a Fortitude save from Grond, please. Round 2 is up. Proteus, Sandros, Royl, then Rana.

Male Human (Alryan) Cleric 3

Proteus carefully moves up within 20 feet of Proteus. Ensuring he is out of the ogre's reach he chants, "Aequo animo." Stabilize on Grond.

Realizing he can't get past the ogre to strike at it from behind, Sandros maintains his defensive stance, ducking and weaving. "Royl!" he shouts, pointing at Rana. "We need an ogre of our own!" He then starts a measured withdrawal, trying to lure the ogre out into the room.

Total defense once again.

Man do I wish I hadn't wasted that! Oh, lost crit possibilities...
Sandros moves back to T18.
