Back at the Roadside Inn, Sandros watches Royl work the room like a trained bard, and can't help smiling. She might have missed her calling, he thinks to himself. After a moment, the smile fades. Brooding is going to change nothing. If Proteus cannot help, you need to find someone who can.

Just then, he notices Grond signaling to him and Proteus, apparently in response to the large warrior who just joined their table. Raising a curious eyebrow - Somehow, I didn't expect the half-orc to be calling on me for help - Sandros smoothly rolls out of his chair and strides across the room.

Roylenna Brenoien wrote:

"...and perhaps more importantly, why do you think it is us who will be able to do it?" Sandros adds, taking a seat at the table without asking. After Royl introduces him, Sandros nods a greeting, but impatiently. "Yes, yes. But this business of yours - what is it, and why come to us with it?"

It's a beautiful day, and you trudge effortlessly on, even if Sandros seems to be lagging somewhat. By the afternoon you reach the gates of Warwik.

Inns range from the posh Black Sheep Inn (3 gp or more a night) to the aptly named Ramshackle flophouse (2 sp). Of course, Sandros's relatives might be able to put you up for the night.

Indeed, Sandros turns to you all as soon as you enter the city gates. "My friends, blood shed together is a bond not easily broken, and it would be my great pleasure and honor if you would allow me to show you the hospitality of my family this night, and perhaps for longer, depending on the nature of our future business." Sandros looks oddly glassy-eyed, and he shivers occasionally, but he seems sincere.

Oh wait! It's a new day!

As the party approaches Warwik, Proteus will twice more offer the blessings of Aesculapius to restore himself and his companions to their wonted states.

Channeled healing (1d6=6, 1d6=4)
That should get everyone back to full, yes?

Grond to Proteus, Black Tom:

Spoiler:

At some point that next morning, Grond will approach Proteus and mention some ear infection he has been having. "I could really use some minor curing, if it be some in fernal plague. I can pay." He mentions the flask of healing.

Grond is in an excellent frame of mind. Other than the blaring sunlight scorching his skin, he keeps a lively pace, especially due to the fact the he keeps Bagbatana (or whatever) hopping along ahead of him, in the FRONT of the line. A little tap now and again with the bronze heft of his javelin (by accident of course) keeps Grond chuckling the whole day thru.

Roylenna gives him a concerned look, but says, "Sandros, that would be very generous of your family. Are you sure that you do not need to let them know before you invite three strangers into their home? I do not want to create problems between you and your kin."

"On the other hand, I would like to see the town of Warwick for a day or two and anything to conserve very limited resources is welcome. What do the three of you plan to do? Spend a day or two here? We could return to the Roadside Inn and look into Rana's job offer - assuming that you are still willing to travel as a group, of course. Lady DeVere winces ever so slightly at the sight of Grond, but her breeding immediately gets the best of her, and she welcomes you all cordially to stay at her estate. After you've left your equipment and washed off the dust of the road, you have a few hours to explore the city before supper (or the entire next day, of course).

Grond, you might want to look at some of the spoilers addressed to you earlier on.

Female Halfling Sorcerer (celestial)

I don't know that there's a lot to do in Warwick. Funds are low, so shopping is really out other than maybe getting some more rations for the trail. Maybe visiting with some learned fellow to get more information about the Heavenly Fire ability - "Have you heard of such a thing? Why does it heal some and hurt others?"

And some retcon since I didn't realize at my last post that we were assuming Rana joined us:

On the trail between the Roadside Inn and the city of Warwick, Roylenna asks the newest member of the group, "Rana, I should explain Grond's remarks about 'trial by fire' when we first met. I'm able to produce fire that heals some people, but it hurts others. I won't use it on you until I know how it affects you -- since we are not in the middle of combat, we could test it now with relatively little ill effect. I will let you think about it. Let me know if you want me to try it on you."

"I'm still curious what this task is that you mentioned last night. Did the quiet woman in the taproom have something to do with it? I noticed her watching you. She seemed worried."

Sandros waves this off. "Whatever problems there might be between my brother and I, my lady, need not concern you. There will be no stinting in hospitality to any of my guests." (He does look sideways at Grond for a moment, but doesn't say anything out loud.)

A whip has 15 foot reach, so I assume that Rana stayed out of Grond's reach during the disarm attempt.

M Half Orc 1 Rogue

Grond knows perfectly well about the ear infection (disease) and in fact mentioned it in a spoiler last night! (snark) Grond asked Proteus if he had anything that could help an ear infection. Honestly, with the pounding Grond has taken, he considers the earache a comfort...

With the pounding Grond has taken recently, the brash act of the travel-stained and arrogant warrior fills him with an orcish rage. As his javelin is suddenly yanked from his grip No human could weather this berzerk storm of wrath, as only Grond Half-human knows. He bites his tongue, literally, the droplet of blood drip onto his spiked leather chest-plate as Roylenna steps in to make light of the situation. Grond goes back to skulking only after stooping, slowly, to pick up his javelin. The fool's fate is sealed, in Grond's mind. And hopefully any more confrontations with Rana!

"Horseman without a horse," he is heard to grumble.

The evening spent at Proteus' Grond will be on his absolute best behavior. He even shakes out the nasty bits from his long greasy locks, and tries to scrape the worst dreck off his clothes and himself before entering the posh abode. He is all bows and cringing. It is rather distasteful actually, but the fanciest place Grond has been, previously, has been the Temple on market day.CHA 7.

He will also be on the lookout for antything valuable that wouldn't be readily missed. A bauble, piece of jewelry, etc. This of course, is to offset the cost of sending a gift to Thorak's family, their loss Grond partially blames on Sandros, or as he calls him [i]Deathwish.

Spoiler:
Wow what is the matter with Grond, he is making all kinds of enemies!

"My, Sir Highpoint, I never expected such opulence," Proteus says to Sandros as they make their way to the Highpoint estate. Practically gawking at the various topiaries that surround the main house. He points to one of a lion. I have never seen such fine work up close. As they approach the home, Proteus is in awe at the marble columns adorning the entrance. "I am not worthy of staying in such a place," he mumbles under his breath.

Proteus eats his meal practically in silence, with only the occassional pleasure filled utterance. It has obviously been a very long time since he has enjoyed such a feast. "Sir Highpoint, your family is in my debt."

Once he has completed his meal, apparently with no time for chit-chat, he excuses himself. "For myself, I should venture into town for errands of my own. I will join you all tomorrow morning to make arrangements for the day."

Proteus will thank each of the present staff who attended them as he makes his way out of the room.

I know there are some loose ends, role-playing-wise, but I'm still going to try to propel the story forward. I trust you to finish your business in Warwik (I like your use of the time fade), and that you agree to check out the old ruins.

After Sandros and Proteus return from their day in town, you get ready to go adventuring again. If you need to stock up on non-magical equipment, feel free to do so. You leave the next morning and reach the Roadside Inn without incident, where you spend the night.

The next day, as you are beginning to climb the hills towards the orcish ruins, Sandros spots movement to your right. It looks like a pair of orcs making haste to avoid you. You see them disappear beyond a ridge some 80 yards away.

"Royl, I like 'Order of the Orange' the most out of your suggestions. I fear that 'Raging Orange' could possibly misrepresent the majority of us." Proteus raises another eyebrow at Grond.

"Another interesting aspect of the name is that it is fairly innocuous. Nothing like running into the bastion of our enemy and calling ourselves 'Slayers of Evil' or 'Warriors of Blood.' I expect Sandros will have some things to say, but I am going to bed soon (it's past midnight here), so I'm going to push on. If anyone of you feels that you have something important unachieved in Warwik, we can hopefully resolve it in a final spoiler. Since Warwik is (probably) going to be your home base, you will be going back there plenty.

None of you feels up to chasing the fleeing orcs, so you press on and at midday you find yourselves back at the trail with the ancient orcish totems.

At the end of the trail there is a pair of dilapidated heavy wooden doors, On one of them there is a pair of orcish insignia: a pair of horn-like incisors beneath an orcish pig-snout. Above the portal, there is written in Orc: "Tread not or be crushed." That's orcish wit for you.

Behind the stairs you spy a sett of 20 feet wide crumbling stone steps twisting upwards, littered with pebbles, bones and other debris.

Now would be a good time to worry about such things as marching order, tactics and light sources. As a matter of fact, I'd like you to roll perception checks and initiative ahead of time.

I’m assuming here that Proteus takes my suggestion and preps light – he can cast it on a weapon, or even his holy symbol (nicely symbolic). I’m guessing, based on recent behavior, that Grond won’t be too enthusiastic about taking point, so Sandros will take advantage of his low-light vision to take point instead, about 30 ft in front of Proteus (who should probably come second). I’m thinking steady progress, moving at half speed and with Stealth as appropriate. Any other ideas/counterarguments?

After unstringing his bow and drawing his rapier instead, Sandros makes his way slowly onto and up the stairs, trying to divide his attention between the treacherous footing and any shadows or passages that might conceal an enemy.

Relevant rolls:
Stealth (untrained) (1d20+4=16)
Perception (1d20=10, +2 if sight or sound)
Initiative (1d20+4=21)

Ouch I think we're being pun-ished! Btw I had been about to suggest a group name with Thorak in mind as a joke. Seeing that everyone was already thinking along the same lines is kind of touching (eyes begin tearing up). I would like to take this time to thank the Academy...j/k. Seriously it is a nice gesture thanks guys.

And now back to your regularly scheduled game...

Behind the stairs you spy a sett of 20 feet wide crumbling stone steps twisting upwards, littered with pebbles, bones and other debris.

Rana unsheaths one of his short swords and uncoils his whip. He moves into position behind Proteus and takes one last lookover his shoulder. The sun catches him in the eyes for a moment making it hard to see in the gloom of the ruins for a few moments.

Black Tom, I would like to work through my spoiler above, we can do so while pursuing the current plan of action as it should have little affect on what we are doing, however, it is important to Proteus that we get it resolved.

I took stabilize because I can use it as many times as I need per day whereas the domain ability is a once per day thing. Although, I wasn't sure when reading it if I can use that ability any time someone is below 0. I will take Sandros advice, in part, and remove create water and take light. As long as that is acceptable to you, Black Tom.

EDIT: One other thing I like about stabilize is that I don't have to touch the person possibly reducing issues with getting in a position to touch.

Proteus gives Sandros a questioning look, it is obvious that spreading out is not a keen tactic in his mind. However, not being well versed in battle formation, he will rely on those more knowledgable.

If approved by Black Tom

Proteus pulls out his holy symbol from beneath his leather garment. "Luminas," Proteus speaks the words clearly and suddenly Sandros' sword glows brightly. "Luminas." Proteus holy symbol also begins to glow with light. "Anyone else?"

M Half Orc 1 Rogue

I suggest the following marching order:

Sandros, Rana
Roylenna, Proteus
Grond

Obviously, the fighters take point, I put Proteus in the middle to be adjacent to all others. Grond in back will allow some hiding and sneaking to the flanks, hopefully.

I actually want Grond to take the point, but at first, here I say we stay together. If this dungeon is as big as I hear it might be, then I would eventually like to use Mialee's trick of being 40-60 feet ahead of the group, especially as Grond has darkvision, and with Roylenna's whisper trick. But for now, lets stick together. At least until we reach 2nd level and can survive TWO blows before going down.

But at least for the first few hallways, Grond needs time to gauge the area before taking the added risk of being on point. Sound tactics?

I also approve the use of Light orison (0 lvl) and suggest casting it on Sandros Sword, as front-line combat is where light needs to be, and Proteus might not always be up front.

Final Role-playing Spoiler:

Spoiler:
I wanted some money to pay for a cure disease prior to leaving the town, and I really was going to send Thorak's family some, Grond saw eye to eye with him, and if you'll remember, Grond actually tried to hurl him to safety, but the lout was too heavy. However, in light of seeing he is exiled from his tribe or whatever, that idea is out, so just skip the stealing from Sandros, although it does seem to me something Grond would consider. (not a bige deal meta-game-wise) However, DM, you better not kill me by this disease which I was trying to find a cure for!!!! I would even stoop to selling my cure light wounds for a cure disease if I had to.

"Aye," Grond grunts as they walk up the scrubby path. "Agents of Orange. I liked that idiot of a dwarf, I really did."

Grond, as usual, holds his javelin as a walking stick, but his eyes constantly shift to the tell-tale signs of orc about. he can feel them. His rage increases by the moment (and sometimes wonders why he didnt choose to be a barbarian) as his lust to slay these evil creatures fills him.

In battle, Grond will hurl his javelin, then attempt a move to a flank. He will always try to move towards the flanks for sneak attack.

Out of battle, I presume Grond will behave as a traditional rogue, and will check each door for traps, constantly scan for sectret doors and traps.

Perception: 5+5=10
Initiative: 14+3+17
Stealth: 6+7+13

A couple of thoughts to toss out from the little one: Roylenna's Dancing Lights are another available light source with some additional options to Proteus' Light. And with appropriate light, she has a very good Stealth bonus -- but she can't sneak if she can't see. And she can hardly withstand a surprise attack, so I don't propose her taking point -- just pointing her out as another resource. Also, in the "taking point" department, it would seem wise to keep Rana near the front unless Stealth is imperative. I suspect we want his swords in the mix as soon as possible -- and it is his task we are undertaking, after all. NOTE: Bringing lights into dark tunnels is going to make it hard to hide, so we will be limited in how stealthy we can be.

Roylenna would stick close to Grond, but she's aware that even if he's not taking point, he may chose to move away from the group to take advantage of his stealth and darkvision, so she proposes to follow closely behind Proteus, likely watching the party's back, maybe with her Dancing Lights.

Having thought this all out loud, how about Sandros, followed at 20' by Rana, directly by Proteus (with Light), directly by Roylenna, followed at 20' by her Dancing Lights. Grond will be free to float around the periphery that way.

EDIT: And now, seeing that everyone else has made a proposal, I want to point out that I'm happy with whatever order we use. This just made sense while I rambled.

I definitely agree with investigating the stairs first. Or am I incorrect in thinking that we had a choice between doors or stairs?

M Half Orc 1 Rogue

Oh wow, I read it as the stairs were inside the doors leading into darkness. We have a choice of doors into the hill or stairs up the hill I vote stairs.

Male Human (mostly) Ex-cleric and Grumpy Cat

OK, let's try to sort all this. I'll run Proteus's Warwik interaction in parallel in spoilers. Regarding changing prepared spells for Proteus, I'll allow it for now, since you have had ample in-game time to discuss it. In the future, Proteus prepares his spells at dawn, and can leave slots open to be filled but prepared spells can't be changed.

The stairs are actually inside the door and leading inside the hill. It's perhaps a little unusual for the stairs into the dungeon to lead up instead of down, but such is indeed the case here.

Sandros goes first in the lead. Because of the cluttered state of the stairs he can only progress at half speed, or else risk stumbling and falling. He proceeds carefully, stepping over bones and debris as he goes and checking for suspicious cracks or other signs of a trap or secret door. The rest of you follow at a distance of 30 feet.

It's a natural cavern, so I'll try to describe it as well as I can. The left wall is running from A3 to G11, where it twists slightly to the left. The right wall runs from I1 to I7, then twists toward L10, then to L13 and back to J14 and then straight ahead to J17. I hope that makes sense.

As Sandros reaches H10, suddenly three ROUS (rodents of unusual size) appear out of the midst of the garbage and lunge at him. Their positions are H11, I11 and I9. Fortunately their eagerness gets the better of them and their crusty teeth snap at empty air.

Suggested positions: Rana G6, Grond I6, Proteus G5 and Royl H4. Feel free to adjust slightly. Moving at more than half speed or fighting on the stairs necessitates an Acrobatics check (DC 12) or risk stumbling and falling. Initiative order is Sandros 21, Grond 17, rats 14, Rana 6, Royl 5 and Proteus 4. Please post your actions.

Edit: added Royl. Sorry, got all those R:s mixed up.

Flashback to Warwik
Proteus:

Spoiler:
A shadow falls over the acolyte's face and he motions for Proteus to come aside. "Yes", he says gravely. "I assume that you are not referring to halflings. Any city the size of Warwik has its share of rumors, and you are well advised to take care at night. But I don't know what kind of advice you seek. The walking dead can be battled by magic or by channeling the sun. Weapons aren't always effective, since some of them are resilient to blows and some are simply incorporeal, so that weapons pass through them. But exactly what did you want to know?

Grond:

Spoiler:
Since even a casting of Cure Disease costs at least 150 gp, it would be far too risky for Grond to attempt a theft of that magnitude, so I presume that he'll resign himself for now to hoping for loot in the dungeon. (Of course, he might want to steal something lesser for Thorak's relatives, but I doubt that you'll be able to track them down.) The disease, though annoying, doesn't seem to be progressive, at least.

Spoiler:
Proteus chuckles, "No it is not halflings of whom I speak. I do not pretend to be knowledgable of the resources available to this temple but, I can give you some information. There was an awakened tomb just one day along the Fool's Pass. Me and my allies lost a member of our group to those within as they tried to infiltrate. I leave these facts with you for whatever action you feel appropriate.

Additionally, it would seem that some of the group is experiencing some reactions to their encounter with the dead. Could you help me in sharing what would be required to clear such an ailment?

I'm assuming we're still on the stairs? I can't tell where the stairs are on the map. If that is the case...

Sandros' eyes go wide as the rodents appear from what he thought was empty space, but he is already sidestepping their attacks and bringing his rapier to bear. Shifting to his left to G10 for a better attack angle, Sandros stabs down at the vicious creature in front of him in H11.

Acrobatics (1d20+8=17)
Rapier attack (1d20+5=21, damage 1d6+2=6)

Also, just a reminder: I too had business in Warwik we can finish in spoilers...

Thanks, I see her now. Questions: In the map, which squares are stairs? What is the general ceiling height in this area?

Regardless, assuming something does not happen to drastically change the wisdom of this move, Roylenna will cast Dancing Lights, four torches style, to hover one each in G-H/9-10, at ceiling height. She will also take a 10' move to F5.

M Half Orc 1 Rogue

Argh I jist have a few second here, but can I make it to a flank? I would like to sneak attack with Javelin if that is ok, if not I would like to charge or move up and attack while dropping jaevelin and equipping falchion.

To move and flank sneak attack with jav.
Acrobatics: 10+7=17
To Hit: 18+3=21
Damage: 4+3+6=13

If I can move and attack w/ falchion:
Acrobatics: 10+7=17
To Hit: 18+3=21
Damage: 3+4=7 (no sneak attack, add 6 if I can sneak)

I hope that is clear, as I cant do the grid thing at work easily. I want to sneak attack with javelin if possible, or move and melee attack if I cant do the former.

Proteus:

Spoiler:

The acolyte frowns and says: "That is serious news, friend. At present we do not have the strength to clear that place out, but we'll mark it on the map and hope some brave adventurers clear it out. I just pray that they won't add to its ranks.
Regarding the symptoms, I am afraid that you might have contracted Taint. Unfortunately it takes powerful magic to remove, so you would have to consult with High priest Thaban about it. I can teach you a simple spell to monitor it, though:

DETECT TAINT
Divination
Level: Cleric 1
Components: V, S
Casting Time: 1 standard action
Range: 60 ft.
Area: Cone-shaped emanation
Duration: Concentration, up to 10
min./level (D)
Saving Throw: None
Spell Resistance: No
You can sense the presence of taint in nearby objects and creatures. The amount of information revealed depends on how long you study a particular area or subject:
1st Round: Presence or absence of taint within the area.
2nd Round: Number of tainted creatures in the area and the strength of thestrongest tainted aura present. If you are free of taint, if the strongest tainted aura is overwhelming (see below), and if the strength of the tainted aura is at least twice your character level, you are nauseated for 1 round and the spell ends.
3rd Round: The strength and location of each tainted aura. If a tainted aura is outside your line of sight, you discern its direction but not its exact location.
Aura Strength: The strength of a tainted aura depends on the corruption
or depravity score (whichever is higher) of the creature you are detecting, or the amount of taint bestowed by an object, location, or creature without a taint score.

Sandros:

Spoiler:
Since the governor's mansion is in the Noble's district, which is a walled community, you need to make quite a fuss before the guards agree to let you in. Eventually you confront Neras, after a rather cool reception by the governor, who leaves the two of you alone. Neras looks a little fidgetty and restless, and demands rather imperiously what you want from him.

Male Human (mostly) Ex-cleric and Grumpy Cat

Sorry that I was unclear. The map is all stairs.

Sandros skewers one of the rats in disgust and then deftly steps over a ribcage to the left. Moments later Grond's javelin pierces another rat. The last rat, seeing itself outmatched and acting true to character, runs off up the stairs, disappearing somewhere to the right.

105 xp for everyone. Go you! Also, I'd like to use the opportunity to give a hero point to Proteus for coming up with a name. Generally I don't want to give out points for good role-playing because you are all excellent role-players and I don't presume to judge your play. Still Grond must have a hero point for careful roleplaying, staying in character without disrupting the party. Remember, hero points are given for anything that enhances the game.

A moment later, a bell rings out and you hear a roar and a wet "thud". The skeletal remains that Sandros is standing in seems to be what's left of a goblin, which is still wearing a gold ear-ring. Beneath it you catch a glint of a rusty dagger.

The ominous sound is followed by an equally ominous silence. The only movement is the twitching of the dying rats. “Let us be frank,” he begins. “You don’t care much for me, I know; I have done little to earn your ire, but just as little to earn your respect. That latter point is something I hope to change, however.”

“When I left, I was at something of a loss for a worthwhile ‘project’ such as you suggested I find. It soon became clear, however, that just as you have followed in your father’s footsteps and proven yourself a worthy figure, so too must I follow in mine. I set out in search of my father, to learn where he had gone and why. In my travels, I learned little – but one thing I did discover. When he left, he did so with an adventuring group lead by a Sun cleric called ‘Kabbal Sharn.’ I have found nothing about this man – indeed, I don’t even know that he is a man – but I had hoped I might be able to call upon your contacts to seek out any information they might have. I would ask them myself, but I did not wish to… tread on unwonted terrain. If you think any of your associates might know something, I would appreciate it if you would ask them on my behalf.”

Sandros pauses for a long moment before continuing. “There is another matter on which I seek information. I have recently… contracted some kind of disease, something called ‘Taint.’ I have been told by a priest of Aesculapius that it can only be cured by potent magic, magic far beyond anything he knows. He tells me it is not dangerous to me yet, but it may become so. For the sake of our shared blood, I ask your help in learning anything you can about who or what might help me.”
