Female Halfling Rogue 2

Looking up at Ka'Kara, "My thanks to you, my fast and strong friend."
and in a hushed tone to Roylenna, "They don't bathe often in her culture, do they?"

Sandros smiles, his half-elven ears apparently enough to pick up the conversation between the halflings. He lets the comment pass, however.

Once they have returned to what he has come to think of as "Ka'kara's cave," Sandros turns to Proteus to talk strategy. "We can rest until you are ready to proceed once again, but I think we should spend some time thinking about how to prepare ourselves for a rematch against the mephit - not to mention whatever it was that attacked Hella and Royl, if we even want to consider such a thing."

Black Tom wrote:
You get 100 xp for the mephit encounter and 80 xp for the dragon, which should be enough for Ka'kara to level up. Also I'll give Roylenna a hero point for being Roylenna.

Is this in addition to the 100 xp you gave us for the mephit before, or just a repetition?

"You have read my mind, friend, I have already begun to consider arrangements for the mephit. I wonder if Ka'kara's nets would come in handy in our attack against the mephit. Perhaps we could use such an item to impede its progress or maybe even pulling it ashore."

"I agree that one of the two should be the focus of our next assault on the denizens within this cave."

Female Halfling Rogue 2

"I wonder if the acidic nature of that creature would damage Ka'Kara's net, though?

Let's split the difference. You can have 50 xp in addition to the 100 xp for the first encounter.

Roylenna takes 11 points of acid damage. And by dragon standards, this counts as indifferent, so the Diplomacy was working after all. ;o)

Except for the odd medium monstrous spider that comes climbing up the shaft and is used by Ka'kara to practice her swing (no, you don't get xp for it), your rest is uneventful and Proteus even gets to prepare new spells.

Roylenna tried to dodge the dragon's breath, but she was pretty much in the middle of the spray with nowhere to go. She staggered back as the pain assailed her, but Ka'kara is there to snatch her and Hella up and run. She hangs like a limp doll for a moment, but the halfling blood won't let her spirits stay down long...

As Ka'kara's strides slows to a walk and the halflings are no longer bouncing her grasp, "Wow! I talked to a dragon! Did you see that Hella? What would Grandmother say?" She points a finger at Sandros, "And don't you say a thing about talking to enemies - you weren't fighting with him yet, so it was still an option. I thought maybe I could distract him while Hella made her escape. Another mistake. Mean old dragon, anyway. Oh, this hurts. Ka'kara, can you set me down yet?"

Once she's on her own feet, she tells Hella, "There's something I've been meaning to ask you. My Heavenly Fire doesn't always harm - for some people, it heals. Watch."

She poses with both hands before her, palms up. Small flames appear, flickering in her hands, then growing brighter and taking on a definite green tinge as they move up her arms. Where the fire meets the acid burns on her skin, the fire burns a brighter green for a moment before continuing. When it's done, it's obvious that the fire hasn't healed all of her wounds, but some of them are definitely lessened.

Heavenly Healing (1d6=5)

"The problem is, I don't know who it helps and who it harms. It seems like mean people, it harms -- the kobolds or the mephits, for example. But others like Sandros or Ka'kara, it helps. The only way I can know for certain is to try it -- let me know if you want me to try this on you. I won't force you."

When we settle in to rest, is Proteus going to channel positive energy, or would he save that in case we are attacked overnight again? If I recall correctly, my Heavenly Fire won't affect our newest member, so I would use my last CLW on her. If Proteus was going to heal her, I would use it on me. Either way, here's the roll:

Cure Light Wounds for Hella or Roylenna (1d8+1=6)

Before Roylenna settles in to sleep, she will use her Prestidigitation and Mending cantrips to clean herself and her gear (and anyone else's, should they ask) and mend the holes left by the acid in her clothes and Hella's. (Again, sharing with anyone that asks.)

Male Human (Alryan) Cleric 3

Before they rest for the night, Proteus casts his final spell. "Vitae,"and energy fills the group. For a whopping 2 hp.

Proteus then pulls his healing kit out and begins to treat the wounds of the others. Heal check to double recovered hit points. Heal check = 12 (forgot +2 for healing kit). But, either way it is unsuccessful.

Can I aid with that Heal check?

Aid Another on Heal check (1d20+4=20)

Does a 16 make it?

Roylenna will apply her CLW to Hella after discovering, much to her disappointment, that her Heavenly Fire has no effect on the other halfling. "It's easier for me to remain at the back of the group and avoid injury." 6 points of healing for Hella.

Unfortunately, I require a 15. However, you can use your roll to care for the party.

Also, I really don't see anything that will directly aid us against the mephit. So I need to know how certain we are that that is the direction we want to go. Otherwise, I think we need to avoid both the mephit and the dragon until I have some other resources.

Having watched Proteus' ministrations on previous occasions, she does her best to ease the injured and hasten the healing process. I believe such healing would not apply to her, though because you can't make a heal check on yourself. Is that correct?

And as far as the mephit is concerned, let alone the dragon, I have little to offer. We do have a pair of corridors in the direction of the dragon that we have not explored, though -- we don't have to go all the way to his lair to find something to do...

I think we should work in the direction opposite the dragon. That means either north of him, or west of him. We can either run past the mephit, or we can go through the east entrance.

Female Halfling Rogue 2

With a wry smile to Roylenna, Hella says,"You have my gratitude, your kindness is appreciated."
She then speaks up,"You all have my apology. I will be more careful in the future, and try not to stir any more dragons."

"You are sure it was a dragon, then?" Sandros asks.

Female Halfling Rogue 2

Hella replies to Sandros, "I had never seen a dragon before, but it did fit the description I have heard from the legends and old bedtime stories from my childhood. Granted this creature wasn't nearly as big as I had expected. Perhaps it is a baby dragon?"

Female Halfling Sorcerer (celestial)

Black Tom, I'm not sure exactly what I determined from the knowledge checks earlier. Please correct me if the following is wrong.

In response to Sandros' question, Roylenna pipes up from where she's been sitting, humming a little tune to herself and practicing her magic.

"Aye, from what I could tell, it is a relatively young black dragon. The breath weapon of that species is acid, and Hella and I can vouch for that is what he used on us. Also, a dragon's breath weapon gets more powerful as it ages. Since I'm still standing here, I suspect its breath has not reached the strength of a mature dragon."

"I also thought that dragons enjoyed discourse, if only to tease their prey. I was hoping a little flattery would give us enough time to make our retreat. We are alive - that's more than most can say after their first encounter with a dragon - but ouch!"

Male Human (mostly) Ex-cleric and Grumpy Cat

That's about right, and I'm afraid I rolled badly enough for you that it's about it.

Not sure where you want to go next, so I'll try to sum up some possibilities. If you want to risk an encounter with the mephit, you could go along either the north or the south bank of the lake. There are also some unexplored passages near the ratmen and some to the east, one to the north if you want to avoid the dragon. Or else you could try and confront it once and for all.

By the way, the Con bonus and penalties wear off about now.

Female Human Barbarian 7

It looks like we are going to have to deal with the mephit one way or another as he is going to be a constant nuisance for us to get anywhere else. Ka'kara is still down 2 h.p. if a healer watched over her as they rested or 4 h.p. if there was no healer to do that. Does Lenna know what goes through the mephits Damage Reduction? If so, can we do something about that?

Ka'kara looks up from the constant sharpening of her sword, "That water demon is a pain in the ass. Let's take care of it. I can try and catch it in my net but I think just hitting it really hard once is going to be more effective. I imagine it's as slippery as an eel in the water for a net to try to hold onto it."

Female Halfling Sorcerer (celestial)

I believe my Heal check was sufficient for you to gain the extra hp from the night's rest. Roylenna's the only one that did not benefit since she's the one making the check.

As for the mephit, the knowledge check only revealed that it has fast healing, nothing about the damage reduction.

The tiny sorcerer replies, "I'm afraid I don't know a good way to address the issue with the mephit. He's going to be hard to catch as long as he's in the water. I do think that if we can punish him each time he shows his face, he might gain enough respect to leave us alone. Some bullies are like that."

Female Human Barbarian 7

Taking out and readying a javelin, "Well, lets make sure it hurts alot if he decides to show his face again. Might as well use the kobold entrance since we have to do less climbing that way." She heads off in that direction. "So which passage would you like to head towards?" she asks as she is walking.

She keeps the net ready in her off hand just in case

I'm not clear on where the fire beetles are, but it appears that if we bear right as we enter and bear right at the lake, we would have some unexplored areas on the north side of the lake. Of course, that takes us directly to our friendly water demon. On the other hand, we left a passage unexplored way back by the ogre's cave a very long time ago. Maybe we should take this opportunity to go back and complete some early explorations...

Female Halfling Rogue 2

Hella decides it wise to follow the big lady with the big sword, her logic being that she might even escape notice if Ka'Kara makes enough of a commotion. If she can remain stealthy and keep up, she will.

Stealth: 1d20+12=19

Sandros, after discussing the matter with Proteus, makes a suggestion for dealing with the mephit:

"We could just grab it."

If that suggestion does not meet with approval, however, he indicates a preference for going somewhere else and coming back to the mephit and the dragon a bit later, perhaps.

"Perhaps we can learn more about one of the creatures if we delay our return for a time. There might be strategies that would help us that we are unaware of."

Female Human Barbarian 7

Reacting to Lenna's words, "Surely, you don't think the little demon stands a chance now that we are prepared for it? If it shows it's face you can burn it, I can hit it with one of my javelins, Hella can hit it where it hurts like last time, Sandros will shoot or hit it, all while Proteus heals any wounds we suffer. How much more dangerous could it be?"

Roylenna shrugs, "I do not fear the physical attacks of the mephit. They seem to be well within our abilities. My concern is its ability to evade us in the water and, more importantly, its magical attacks. We do not know if those are limited in nature, as mine are, or if they come back faster, perhaps after a minute rather than after a day."

"I am more than happy to participate if the group seeks to pursue the creature, but now that we are not in imminent danger, I am not sure what the purpose of such a combat even is. He has angered us, but that does not mean we cannot walk away." Another shrug, "As the party wills. I am casting no vote."

Female Human Barbarian 7

Ka'kara smiles at Lenna, "Angry? No, I have had a chance to calm down." She shrugs, "The creature seems like it will try to get us again and when that happens we need to be ready for it. I would avoid it entirely as it is probably not worth the trouble but that it seems to be in the way of our further progress." Her grin widens, "Now the dragon on the other hand seems like a worthy opponent. That! I wish a chance to face again." Her excitement rolls off of her as she takes a practice swing with her blade.

"You know," says Sandros idly to the air, "there are those who claim I have a reputation for overconfidence." He glances sideways at the barbarian. "I think such people overestimate me - or perhaps underestimate my associates."

With a grin, he turns toward Royl. "You said you remembered a passage near the ogre's cave that we missed before? Why don't we start there, and see what treasures we might have overlooked."

Looking at WorsT's excellent map, there's an unknown at the bottom, right of the legend (off the ogre's cavern) and an unknown on the right (east?) side of the orc's room, as well. I was referring to those. Did we leave the rope tied to the statue, btw?

Female Human Barbarian 7

As Sandros indicates the direction, Ka'kara begins heading off in that direction. "Good, it's decided then. Let's start with the nearest one, the orc cave."

Roylenna Brenoien wrote:

We did. We didn't really have any way to untie once we all climbed down anyway.

We've had some personnel changes since the last marching order. How about Hella (taking a longer lead when stealth is desired), ten feet of lead, followed by Sandros (for his eyesight), Ka'Kara (so she can get to the front or the back quickly), Roylenna (to direct the ever-present Dancing Lights, and Proteus?

Sounds good to me. I'd be happier with it if I had Quick Draw, so I could cover Hella with my bow and still get to my rapier quickly, but I'll make do. For the moment, I'll just have to assume I run up on any attackers quickly (which, to be honest, is what Sandros likes to do anyway...).

Male Human (mostly) Ex-cleric and Grumpy Cat

Following the passage from the orc cave you soon find yourselves overlooking the lake again (at the ledge 10 feet up just south of the passage to the west).

Having resolved that loose end, whereto next?

Loose end #2 was off the ogre cave, I believe. Do we want to go there next? Might need to be careful in case the ogre's returned.

Now we have a cleric with comprehend langauges prepped, however. We might be able to negotiate with more effectiveness, if it comes to that. I say we go for it.

"I'll go with you. I don't think he felt threatened by either of us, and I was trying to talk to him." And I now have Giant in my list of languages spoken. Yay bard level!

I'll take it you have an agreement to send in Proteus and Roylenna to try to speak with the ogre, keeping Sandros and Ka'kara (and Hella) within charging distance (or something like it).

Proteus and Roylenna cautiously approach the ogre's cave, and indeed he seems to be in. Most of a deer carcass lies slumped on the floor and a javelin carrying an impaled kobold stands against a wall.

Seeing you, the ogre breaks into a grin, points at Proteus and says something in Giant:

Spoiler:
"Ah, healer man. Grosh fine now, thanks. Found nice food outside." He points to the kobold. "You can live on it, but it tastes like s**t."

"Protjuice good man. He want piece of deer?"

In Giant:

Spoiler:

"That is very generous, Grosh, and it is a splendid deer, but we have just eaten. Perhaps we may join you another day?"

She looks at the impaled lizardman, "We were attacked by the kobolds. They nearly killed me, but Protjuice saved me. We went back and attacked them. I don't think there are many of them left. I'm glad we could kill the deadman, too."

She looks around the cave as though looking for something, but without walking around, "Grosh, have you seen a human man in the caves other than my friends? We came to the caves looking for such a man when we stumbled into your home here."

Is Royl translating or not? (Trying not to read spoilers...)

Male Human (mostly) Ex-cleric and Grumpy Cat

I think Royl should be able to translate, but I'll leave it to her. Sorry for this, but I think the conversation is drawing to an end.

Spoiler:
The ogre scratches his head. He says: "Oh, Grosh not know. They dressed in leather. Wise guys, keep distance from Grosh. Grosh not get very good look. They not bother Grosh, Grosh not bother them.

Since it seems the ogre is not attacking you on sight at least, do you still want to try the passage to the south?

Female Halfling Sorcerer (celestial)

Roylenna was translating the conversation for Proteus because I thought he was the only one present. I thought the others were waiting out of sight. If the others were present, consider the conversation translated. Any questions you would like me to pass on to the big guy?

In Giant:

Spoiler:

Pointing to the tunnel to the south, "Grosh, do you mind if we explore this tunnel?"
