Thoughts on Little Lamplight

If there were only 82 original kids, all the adults were dead within months of the apocalypse, and they were kicking out the 16 year olds by the end of that first year...

How in the hell are there any kids in 2277 when I stumble in?

Bare minimum, you need 40/40 male/female to sustain the population for 200 years, and all 40 females must successfully give birth at least once a year for the first five years. Then the female offspring need to wait until they're about 35 years old before they have the next batch of kids; and let's just conveniently ignore the lack of appropriate medical supplies and skills, and the fact that everyone is living in a cave, post-nuclear winter...

Has anyone ever gone back to 87? There's one door that's locked and requires a key (it's just before the GECK labs, a large open room with high ceilings and exposed pipes). I've scoured the place and found nothing. My map shows what looks to be several rooms beyond that door.

I always figured it was the childcare centre of the wastes. That there was a continual influx of children from other locals because of safety concerns, food requirements, orphaning, etc.

The Fallout 3 wiki seems to indicate the door in Vault 87 might lead out to the incredibly dangerous and highly irradiated front door to the vault. I've tried to reach the door from the outside, and I've died every time. A high Endurance and level of rad resistance are probably the only way to reach the door but, since there is no key, you'll probably die on your way back to safety.

The wiki also doesn't explain how Little Lamplight repopulates with children, but the "wasteland orphanage" idea seems to be pretty popular.

I think that door is where the Enclave ambushed me.

Maybe when children are born in Little Big Town the parents bring them to Little Lamplight (probably at toddler age).
