Need some class suggestions

4th Edition

Now I am usually a DM, so I don't play often, when I do I usually like to play off archetypes.

So that in mind, I have started playing in a 4e campaign, and the character I want to run is the sorcerous sword-swinger, are there any suggestions for this build?

What ratio of sword-swinging to sorcery are you looking for? Also, what kind of sword-swinging do you want to do, I mean are you looking to be a tank or more of a swashbuckler?

It completely depends on what sort of spellcasting you want - anyone can take the Ritual Caster feat and thus use rituals.

I take it you want to be a melee combatant? In which perhaps Fighter multi classed into Warlock or Wizard. Or maybe 're-skin' the Paladin to be an arcane warrior.

If your game doesn't start for a couple of months, you could wait for the FRCS and the swordmage class (arcane defender).

The Exchange

Duskblade from the PHB2. It does sorcerer/fighter mixes proud. You also really don't need to multiclass either for a solid build, just go Duskblade 20 and concentrate on what type of feats and stuff you need to fill out your idea of what type of weapon/armor/gear you want to use.
Shouldn't be too hard to convert over to 4E, should it?

There are ways to make a weapon your implement, but nothing that specifically allows you to channel spells through the weapon, so capturing the main schtick of the duskblade would be somewhat problematic.

Unfortunately I can't wait for the swordmage class, though I may try to talk my DM into letting me change when it comes out, but for now I'm definetly looking for more of a swashbuckling caster, not a tank. If we were in 3.5 I would do a Duskblade, that's really what I'm aiming to emulate.

Personally, I would go with a Charisma-based rogue multi-classed with a fey pact warlock. Racially, go with the half-elf and pick-up one of the wizard at-will powers as an encounter power for some extra sorcery goodness (I'd go with scorching burst so you have an AoE spell in your back pocket). Try to find yourself a pact blade for some extra synergy between your warlock and rogue classes.
