Anyone add gnomes as a player race?

Since the MM includes them as a viable player race, are you allowing them in your campaign?

Yeah, but my players have to keep in mind that it's meant to be a monster race, and their tied ability is toned down and meant to be weaker than base classes. The new Warforged is the most current example of this, the one in Dragon magazine is a lot better than the one presented in the MM.

I dunno. Some races from the MM seem to pretty good - including the gnome, the drow, the shadarkai, the gnoll, and the minotaur. There are no racial feats or specific stuff, but it doesn't matter much, except if you are a powergamer. We have an orc fighter in our party and seriously, he rocks. It doesn't compare to the "abyss" that existed on 3.5E between "PC races" and "Bad guy races".

absolutely, gnomes are as important a race to me as elves and dwarves. I'm still irked they got bumped from the book, but at least they are in the MM. I'm hoping when the next add-on comes out they get a proper writeup.

Amen to that. The new level-less monster races are amazing. It's the best of the older editions, where you could play monsters without penatly, and the best of the new, where playing a human is a very smart option mechanically.

I am looking forward to the inevitable racial splat book, which will do a better job of detailing all these monster races up with feats etc.

It'll be weird when we switch to 4th ed, and my Gnome Barbarian suddenly becomes a Fighter, who can also "disappear" like he never could before, but yes, Gnomes will stay.

I'll try the 4e Rules As Written for a while, and maybe change them to suit taste.

addendum

my complaint about the gnome writeup, besides the obvious one about being only in the MM and only being one page is the fact that they turned them into freaking leprechauns or something. Fey tricksters

bleck

I always played my gnomes as illusionist pain-in-the-butt tricksters so not much of a change for me. The lack of racial feats is a bummer though, until they are released or I gin some up anyway.

If a player wants to play one, I dont see why not. I'm up for allowing most any of the monsters in the MM, though.

Cool. May I play in your game as a gibbering orb?

Who the what now?

When you say Dragon, you mean the WotC website? They've posted an alternate 4e warforged? interesting.

I loathe gnomes. I know of no one, personally, who has played one in over 20 years. But even I want to play one of the new "fade away" gnomes. Damn. That ability rocks.

Makes me want to write up a bunch of Racial feats to play off of it, like the other races get. Things like granting a bonus to your next attack after Fading, or a big bonus to damage, or a movement increase while using Stealth.

Not only did they make an alternate Warforged, that article is better than the racial write ups in the PHB. Warforged got some MAJOR TLC with that pdf. Here's the direct link to the pdf:

In the left hand feature column here you'll see the Dragon articles most recently released. Playing Warforged is a full racial writeup for Warforged, including Racial Feats, Paragon Paths, and Equipment! The Yeenoghu article is pretty cool too, I thought. Later this month we're supposed to be seeing an Illusion-focused Wizard Class Acts article. I always thought Class Acts was one of the better columns too!

Cheers! :)
