"Let's have a quick look at the provisions," says Larkspring. He casts detect magic and focuses on the pile of weapons. Are there any magical auras?

Seeing the healer's kit...

"Does anyone have experience tending wounds? I spent some time working in a hospital in Magnimar tending soldiers and helping with emergency care. I could use this kit to tend wounds in case my magical resources run out. Any objections to me holding on to this?"

"Yes, take it. I have not had much time to learn the ways of magic-less healing."
Need to wait for Zoom to post.

Arcane energies flow out of Larkspring seeking similar energies, they float about searching but find nothing but what the group already has on their persons. Tegid picks up the healers kit and finds the normal healer items needed to help folk, he also notices five carefully labeled bottles with the words arsenic on each one.

The boat pushes off of the dock and begins to make its way up river once again. You pass under the bridge and then into the jungle proper, rising like the wall of a green fortress, the Vanji River issuing from its dark greenhouse. A little less than ten miles into the jungle, Captain Esteban steers the wheelboat into a tributary he calls the Kurka River rather than following the main artery of the Vanji. He explains that this stagnant rill flows from Kurka Swamp, in turn fed by the Brimstone Falls on the opposite site. The swamp is fife with plantlife of all kinds, including mobile plant creatures that serve as hosts for the badly needed arcophages. He states it should take the boat a few days off of its schedule, and the only alternative is to swim or walk once the current arcophage gives out. At that he stops talking abruptly with a strange look in his eyes leaving the crew to go back to their duties.......

"Tell me Captain, do you happen to know why the people of White Bridge would carry bottles of poison in their medical kits?"

Tegid shows them the bottles of arsenic before stowing them back away in the kit and packing it into his pack.

"Good question Larkspring. I need to pray to Irori to refresh my daily allotment of spells as well and I would like to take a few moments to make a few notes in my journal."

Liberty's Edge

The Captain says to Tegid as you slowly turn onto the Kurka River, the poison is used as a rather drastic treatment for sleeping sickness.

Travel along the river is slow going, it takes most of the day and all of the night to reach the swamp. You leave the Vanji and travel some time on the Kurka River until you reach the swamp. It stretches out as far as the eye can see. Hummocks of tangled trees and plant life grow among hundreds of water channels overgrown with reeds and showing only the slightest trace of a current in their stagnant surfaces. The ever-present rumblings of the River Queen's engine suddenly ceases, leaving an unnatural silence over the scene, with only the sounds of the creaking vessel, the faint whisper of a breeze through the tree tops, and the occasional cry of some strange marsh animal. The boat slowly drifts to a halt at the very edge of this marshy labyrinth.

Triska turns to the captain. "So where do we find these magical creatures that power your boat? I hope you're not going to tell us to just wander through this swamp." She irritatedly waves away a cloud of mosquitoes.

Liberty's Edge

As the boat slowly comes to a halt the Captain calls for the crew to gather around him, We have stopped due to the tangled plants and drifting debris of the swamp, its not safe to use the sternwheeler lest it becomes snarled and damaged. Therefore the only way for the us to proceed is for all of us to take turns pulling the boat with ropes to our distination. The water level in the swamp is only about four feet deep so it should not be a problem. Two will pull while one will stand watch over the two from the boat. It will take us about two days to get to the falls where I know we can find some new arcophage. We will only pull the boat during the day and take our rest at night when it is to dangerous to be in the water. So who would like to take first shift pulling the boat? The Captain looks at each of you to see what each of you has to say......

Triska sighs and rolls her eyes. "So much for being a guard. I guess we're beasts of burden, too. I'll go too - maybe the water will cool me off." She peels off her armor until she is just wearing a loincloth, then makes sure her klar and kukri are firmly attached to her belt before diving in.

She's also keeping her belt pouch with her elixir of swimming in it with her.

Liberty's Edge

The hot days sun bares down on the boat and the group of warriors trying to brave the swamp with all of its nasty biting bugs, smells of stagnant swamp water and the suns heat burning flesh. Two brave the swamp by pulling it along for two hours before they tire, switching shifts with others on the boat before they fall of exhaustion into the putrid water. The day goes by like this each taking his or her turn moving the boat along to their goal, at dusk the Captain calls for an halt to the days pulling and has the River Queen moved up onto a fairly dry beach. Faruq gets off a luck shot as he went out for fresh food, coming back with a boar to feed everyone. While the boar is roasting over the fire the Captain breaks out a cask of grog from the hold to celebrate the kill and of the battle upon the bridge. As you take your ease the Captain says he has been on the look out for any mobile plant forms as they traveled but has not spotted any to this point. Once food and much drink as been consumed it is time to lay your heads down and gain rest for tomorrows boat pulling to continue. The Captain asks who would like to take the first watch, one person should be fine changing every two hours or so.......

Female Human (Shoanti) Barbarian 2/Ranger 2

Triska tosses back her grog. "I will watch first. Otherwise I'll stay up all night drinking and you may not be able to wake me." She lets out a satisfied belch.

Liberty's Edge

Triska takes the first watch on this humid night. Everyone else is busy chatting and drinking for awhile before deciding to bed down. Its quiet, the Captain is sound asleep and Faruq is about to pass out from the amount of grog he has consumed is such a short time. Triska standing watch sees a faint light in the distance bobbing up and down heading in the parties direction. As it gets closer she can hear a sound that resembles a hacking, chocking cough.....

Female Human (Shoanti) Barbarian 2/Ranger 2

Triska lights a sunrod and hurls it into the darkness towards the bobbing light. "Up!" she shouts. "Something is coming!" Triska readies her bow to aim at the approaching light. "Identify yourself!" she calls.

How far away is the light, and is it over the water?

Triska can see it but can't make what it is from where she stands, her words go off into the swamp with no responce. Larkspring can barely make out what Triska points at through bleary eyes, rubbing them does not seem to help. Tegid has similar problems rubbing his sleep filled eyes. The light gets closer to the group, continuing its bobbing up and down until it gets close enough to tell its ploy is not working. The thing seems to be nothing but a faintly glowing sphere of light. It halts hovering over the water about some thirty feet away as if thinking about something. Everyone stands at the ready not sure what the thing is or what it wants. With the added light in the area now, an unnatural patch of oily blackness on the water can be seen approaching the group about 15 feet away. Vaguely discernable are the lumps and protrusions, as if it were a tangle of bracken and flotsam. It has a slight sheen and most disturbingly of all, seems to be floating along against the slow current of the swamp....

Init order
Tegid, floating light, Sabriel, Triska, Floating mass, Larkspring and Fir

The light moves foward sending forth a blast of energy at the group on the shore of the swamp. As the floating mass of oil moves closer it's surface starts to swirl and undulate in a strangely compelling manner. Everyone watches in amazement as these unseemly creatures begin to threaten and attack you.

State your actions for the first round!

Tegid stands up and drawing on the power of Irori chants a prayer of power summoning forth a large fist of magical energy which streaks off to strike the globe of energy.

Tegid stands (move action) and casts Spiritual Weapon on the globe of light.

Spiritual Weapon:
Duration - 4 rounds (40 seconds)
Attack: +5 (+2 BA, +3 Wis)
Damage: 1d8 + 2

Spiritual weapon attack against globe of light (1d20+5=24, 1d8+2=5)

Seeing Tegid attacking the light, Triska focuses her attacks on the strange oil slick, firing two arrows in quick succession at it.

Larkspring summons a sphere of white-hot fire to his hand with a gesture and a few words(he's not wearing armor, as he was sleeping, so AC 13).
"Shien en!"
For Zoom:

Spoiler:
Casts produce flame (standard action), duration 4 minutes, melee touch attack 1d20+4 (1d6+4 damage) or ranged (120 feet max) touch attack 1d20+6 (1d6+4), -1 minute for each attack attempt, renews after each attack.
The spell sheds bright light in a 20-foot radius and shadowy light in a 40-foot radius. Larkspring moves to the closest edge of the ship to the oily thing.
Fir, roused by seemingly nothing, gets up and moves to the side as well. He is a bit shy of jumping into the water where the oily thing is.
For Zoom:
Spoiler:
Empathy link wakes up Fir.
Fir gets up {from the prone position} (move action) and moves to the side of the ship where Larkspring is (move action). He waits until the strange things move closer.

Female Celadrin Warlock 3

Sabriel finally sees both the Glowing Light and the strange Oil Slick. Deciding at this point that the Light is the more dangerous because of it's mobility, she directs her gaze towards it and fires a fiery beam at it.
Fiery Gaze (Ranged Touch Attack). (1d20+4=23)
Fiery Gaze Damage. (4d6=14)

Triska-

Spoiler:
The light is a creature of the swamp Triska remembers, she thinks is called......... something........ah..... wisp, has an immunity to magic and deals electric damage.

A weapon of magical energy comes forth from Tegid's holy symbol, a fist of fury streaks out towards the floating light, it looks like it hits it but its hard to tell is anything happen at all. A blast of electrical energy shoots from the light and heads staight for Larkspring, hitting him in the chest sending shock waves through his body(4 hps dam). Sabriel turns to the light and lets forth one of her eldritch blasts striking the creature to no effect it seems. Arrows streak out of Triska's bow and easily finds their target, the oil slick continues to swirl around and its hard to tell if the thing can feel pain or not but it does seem more agitated than it was. The swirling is becoming hypnotic to those viewing the oil slick as it circulates.Lark and Triska make will saves. As Larkspring tries to cast his magic he has an urge to approach the swirling mass as does Triska. Fir gets himself up slowly and makes his way over to Larkspring not sure what is wrong with his friend.

Next Round!

Damnit! Had my post all written, and it got eaten :(
Lessee...

Larkspring tries to fight the impulse to touch the black oil.
Will save: 1d20+7=17.
If he makes the save:

Larkspring shakes off the compulsion, and flings his ball of fire at the swirling mass. Before anyone can notice, another sphere appears in his hand. He then moves to his bed, where he may have a chance to grab his wand.
Standard action to make a ranged touch attack against the oil: 1d20+6=17, 1d6+4=10 fire damage, range 120 feet (the spell lasts for 2 minutes and 54 seconds longer). Move action to head for his bed, 20 ft. per move. He has 15 AC thanks to Tegid's spell.
If he fails the save:

Larkspring has an intense need to know what the oil feels like on his skin dives over the railing and starts swimming towards the oil, if it's more than 5 feet away.
Move action to jump/swim, another move action if not already touching the oil. Swim check (if too deep to stand for a 4-foot tall gnome): untrained, no Strength bonus, no armor check penalties 1d20=3. He may start going under.
If Larkspring fails his Will save:

Fir tries to grab his friend in his teeth, ignoring any harm that may come to Larkspring.
Nonlethal attack, -4 on each attack. I think Larkspring would snap out of it after taking damage. Full-round attack action (all attacks dealing nonlethal damage): Claw 1d20+2=18, 1d4+4=6; claw 1d20+2=5, 1d4+4=8; bite 1d20-3=-2, 1d6+2=6. Total 6 nonlethal damage.
If Larkspring makes his Will save:

Fir, seeing another of his friends acting oddly, charges at Triska and tries to bowl her over.
Fir charges, trying to overrun Triska and knock her prone (or at least make her wake up from the trance). Rules details:

Spoiler:
Move/coupled with overrun (move action to get close enough, standard action to overrun): Triska gets an attack of opportunity; Triska has the chance to avoid entirely; if Triska chooses not to evade, she gets a Str or Dex check (whichever is higher), vs. Fir's Strength check: 1d20+4=7, if she fails she is knocked prone; if she succeeds she can make a Strength check to knock Fir prone, versus his Dex/Str (Str, being higher) of 1d20+8=23 (he gets a +4 bonus for 4 legs).

If Triska has already jumped in, Fir charges off the prow of the ship and tries to grapple the glowy orb. More contingency rules:
Spoiler:
Run action (x5 speed due to feat), grants a +4 bonus to jump checks, runs off prow of ship (from where he stood next to Larkspring. Jump check (if his 200 feet of movement is more than the length of the ship): 1d20+12=27 (enough to jump 27 feet horizontally [midpoint 13 feet out, having a midpoint of 6 3/4 feet above takeoff point], before descending at a rate of x=4y [when y=vertical distance and x=horizontal distance] and landing on the ground [a minimum of 53.75 feet traveled]. Can Fir try to "hug" the orb while in midair? If he can, I think he'd take a -4 penalty to a melee touch attack (treated as a grapple), since he won't be able to maneuver much once in the air: 1d20=17. If the deck is more than 10 feet above the sand (or water, in which case he takes no damage at all), Fir attempts a Jump check to land without taking as much damage (the +4 bonus from running is included since it's easier to take a fall if you've got horizontal velocity): 1d20+12=17 (makes the DC 15, so he takes damage as if the height were 10 feet less).

Tegid's spiritual weapon attacks the oil slick again, the slick recoils from the assult on it by the divine. While his spell is taking care of business he whips out a scroll and begins to utter words off of it. Soon a bright light flashes off in the water somewhere with a splash. From behind the floating creature, Tegid's aid arrives to help by attacking it, it really hard to tell if the thing is taking damage of not but by the swirling keeps starting and stopping everytime it is hit. Lighting like energy flies from the floating light arching out directly at Triska and Faruq as they wrestle. It zips past as Faruq pulls Triska to the ground and foils Sabriel's attack as she halts to miss the two on the ground plus the bolt of energy shoots just in front of her. The oil slick tries to grab at Triska again but she is to far away now thanks to Faruq. Its having a hard time focusing also as it keeps getting attacked from different directions. Lark continues to try and swim towards the foul floating monster but he keeps wanting to sink with each stroke, his friend gives a helping paw to keep the little one a float. Faruq continues to hold down Triska while the captain slashes at the water bound monster, he strikes it easily but seems to cause little hurt as the thing does not even pause.
