Good RPG Podcasts

Liberty's Edge

Recently I've started getting into RPG podcats (I usually work alone in a room at my job; I have lots of time to listen to stuff). I've discovered several that I like, and I thought I'd share.

Sons of Kryos: I'll start with what I consider to be the best first. The Sons of Kryos are, to put it bluntly, flat-out awesome. Jeff & Judd (and later, Storn) are really serious about their fun. I have gained tons of great ideas from their podcasts. They don't play much d20 (well, Jeff does, but Judd & Storn don't, though Storn does post his art on the art forum over on the WotC boards), but it really doesn't matter much; the advice they dispense works well for pretty much any roleplaying. You can find them here.

Animalcast: A little bit lighter and more meandering, topically-speaking, than some of the others, this is still a fun podcast. These guys play Pathfinder, and have interviewed James Jacobs on one of their shows, which is pretty cool. You can find them here.

3.5 Private Sanctuary: These guys focus on a topic near & dear to many of our hearts: keeping 3.5 going. They've interviewed Wolfgang Baur, and have spent multiple shows going over the Pathfinder Betas. You can find them here.

These are the three that I've listened to multiple episodes of and enjoyed, and that I feel I can recommend right now. There will probably be more in the days & weeks to come.

<--chopped liver. ;)

Thanks for the list, Timespike.

Shoulda said FUNNY CARS! FUNNY CARS! FUNNY CARS!, Jade. You'd be the lord of that list right now.

Hey, you guys at Dark Whispers have only done ONE PODCAST! ONE! Once you have some episodes built up, you'll go on the list! ;) It was pretty entertaining and (true story!) I never would have found the others without you. For those interested, the sequence of events went like this:

Nick Logue announced sinister adventures.

I checked out the website and noticed a podcast.

Some days later, I got tired of listening to talk radio at work. (Hillary vs. Barack, round 74, and why you should care)

I fired up the Sinister Adventures podcast on a shift at work.

The podcast was entertaining and informative! Alas, it did not fill my 8-hour shift.

The podcast mentioned Goblin at the end.

I went over to Goblin, and listened to their in-house podcast.

Everybody mentioned Sons of Kryos.

I tried to use Goblin to listen to Sons of Kryos.

Goblin, to quote Eddie Izzard, Did Not Work.

I Googled Sons of Kryos, going through sevral misspellings. (Suns of Crios?)

I checked out Sons of Kryos.

I listened to nothing else at work for over two weeks.

I ran out of Sons of Kryos episodes.

I decided that rather than talk radio or music, podcasts were the way to go.

I started looking for more.

And here we are.

For thse interested in skipping a few steps in there, this is a much more user-friendly way to look for RPG podcasts than Goblin at the moment.

Excellent. Now Goblin shall see the power of the recommendation! Mwoo ha ha!

Wait until you see who we might have on the next show. I'm positively giddy. (either that or it's heart-rupturing dose of caffeine I just subjected myself to)

Two more I'd recommend:

The Tome Show

The Bear's Grove

Yeah, I need more razzle dazzle. Hey, what if I record the next podcast in a clown suit while bikini models pelt me with veggie sausage and lit firecrackers? Anything for the show, y'know?

Already been done. Some dude in Tenafly, I think.

Not to say you can't have a good time of it. Just don't tell the bikini models that the tape's not rolling.

I remodeled a modeling agency last year. On occasion, I was forced to engage in what some might call conversation.

Uch.

UCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCH.

Have an IQ or die. Yeah, I said it.

Sorry for the threadjack. Back to good podcasts!

Haha, All right! A musician who doesn't have a model fetish. Every so often, I run through all the rock stars who married (mostly later to unmarry) models, and all the songs that have been written about pictures of models.

No offense to that British fellow you like a lot, and who appears to still be happily married to his Mrs. It just got kind of overdone for a while. ;)

Uptown girls, they's all lookin fer them uptown girls....

Bowie has a thing for the beautiful people, and there just isn't enough time to get them all bedded while Iman is sleeping. If Bowie is playing your town, lock your doors, folks.

See now Joel and Springsteen are sharp guys with deep lyrics, so when they go and marry semi-cognizant size one lemurs, you've got to wonder if it isn't coming from a place of insecurity because they couldn't get those prom queens way back when. Then again, there's always that animal brain directive to secure the fittest mate for breeding. This explains why women like the guy who is:

a) Rough and Tough -- because he can protect the young from Smilodons and Michael Jackson and such.

b) Affluent -- because he can provide resources for the young, like a McMansion, college tuition and a Volvo during sophmore year.

c) Intelligent -- because the young might have better tools for their own survival. Ie, they won't be the kids who get tricked into climbing powerlines or setting themselves on fire in order to win Jolly Ranchers in a bet.

d) Gorgeous -- because cute enough kids won't have trouble securing mates with any or all of the above. The world is their playground. They're too sexy for this list... too sexy for this list oh baby, I'm pissed...

e) A D&D player -- hey, seriously... what's sexier?

I don't mean to slag models. I've been paid to wear things and be photographed (weird guy in the city... an assless duck suit... lots of nudity). Cindy Crawford was the Valedictorian of her high school. I can truly respect that. But cheating on faithful husband Richard Gere for a night of crusty textured, monosyllabic grunting fun with Sly Stallone? That girl don't sound like no kinda jean-yuss to me.

This post is the most jacked I've ever jacked. Timespike, I owe you.

Woo-hoo! :D

Yeah, sorry, Timespike. I would put the conversation elsewhere, but even I would be embarrassed to launch a thread called "Musicians who marry models." I'm pretty shameless about OT, but I'm not that debased yet.

So, yeah, podcasts, when's the new Sinister Voices going to drop?

Trey wrote:

Well we're forming the guest line-up now, but we know what our topics are and we're just trying to secure an interview with a guy I can't wait to talk to. I really hope we get him.

Thanks for asking, Trey. :)

No problem guys, at least it was an amusing threadjack. I will say this, if one looks hard enough, one can find women who provide beauty AND brains. My very lovely and VERY intelligent (smarter than me, and I'm no idiot) wife is proof of this.

Absolutely, Spike... I've just found that the beautiful and brainy women I've known haven't been models. And by known...

Ha! Well played. Anyway, back to podcasting.

I've tried out a few of the earlier episodes of the Bear's grove (and the more recent blight elves interview). It's not bad, and I liked the interview he did with you guys on the blight elves. (I may have to get that product, my word that sounds [censored] up...) But I have to admit, I rolled my eyes a tiny bit when he referred to roleplaying as a "spiritual experience" for him, and I have no desire to game with anyone under the age of 16. Ever. Still, not bad. I'll definitely plow through his stuff like I did with SoK. The tome show I listened to the one episode about Pathfinder, and haven't gotten back to yet.

Timespike wrote:

Two episodes ago (I think), there was an interview with Ed Greenwood. Ed Greenwood has the best speaking voice I've ever heard in my life. The guy should just talk for a living.

Timespike, is the audio quality on the ones you've recommended up there? Like you, the Dark Whispers thing is the first one I listened to, but then when I moved on to try a different podcast, the person hosting was interesting, but the sound was coming off like RealAudio circa 1997, "Thratghts rghight, yourgh lghistghing tghoo mghusicgh oghver the Intghernet!" I'm all for computer nostalgia, but I can't hack a half hour of wow and flutter.

No naughty jokes on that last phrase, Jade. It's too easy a target, and I hope you're embarrassed for even considering it.

No kidding! The Sons of Kryos interviewed him a while back, and they have a bumper of him speaking as Elminster. That guy should be doing voice over work or something. I wish my own voice sounded half as cool as his does. I'd love to get him to do readings of... ...something. I'm not sure I'd even care what it was.

Sons of Kryos is really good (especially the more recent episodes; the way older ones are a bit less so). It's actually the most professional-sounding podcast I've found so far, both in terms of content and sound quality (and considering some of the others, that's really saying something!) The others are also pretty clear. I keep hearing about "Have Games, Will Travel" being really good, too, but I haven't gotten around to listening to them yet.

My best advice on podcasts is to listen to the most recent one and see if that's okay, then go mining in the archives. But I'm still new at this whole bit; I'm hardly a leading expert or anything.

'Unleshing' isn't to be confused with 'unleashing'. It's a Welsh word meaning, "To compulsively engage in sophomoric humor."

Did that sound believeable?

Well I've always found you a bit lesherous.

So yeaahhhh, podcasts... They're real, you know. Yeah.

LOL

Sons of Kryos is people all in the same room together, thus their impeccable clarity. Ed and I interview over the net but we've figured out the dodgy sound quality issues and I can assure you Dark Whispers episode 2 will be crystal clear -- crystal that's been heavily scratched up by silverware anyway.

Everyone who listens will get a free house salad and an honorary degree in animal husbandry from our unaccredited university. So stop on by. You'll come for the French herb croutons but you'll stay for the robotic turkey baster sow imsemination.

I actually thought yours sounded pretty good. I think it's mainly the podcasts that use really low bitrates I have difficulties with.

Thanks! I'll sound so there next time around you'll want to check your ice cube tray for yellow cubes.

"Uh... why would I associate your entry into my home with such a base prank?"

"... no reason?"

I'm looking forward to another podcast.

But know this - my expectations have been raised. I expect much pig lovin'. Sure sure, I initially came to the site for Logue, but I stayed for the swine molestation.

Interviewing Ed Greenwood? Yeah that's ok I guess.

Humping bacon? Oh yeah. That's where the brilliance lives.

Oh not to worry, we will certainly be makin' bacon. Healy's been working his cardio and strength training every day so he doesn't embarass himself out there.

I love bacon. It's sah-weeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeet....

In case anyone is mystified by all this talk of pig love. It owes nothing to the podcast itself and everything to the promo for the podcast.

Follow this link then scroll down until you can click on Promo 1: Travel the Razor Coast. It's a 51 second ad and it's goofy. If anyone needs a commercial, gimme a call. I need gas money.

You can actually find a listing of various RPG Podcasts at http://rpgpodcasts.com/.

I also post a list of new episodes (on a weekly basis) of the various RPG Podcasts over at my blog. Here's the link to this week: http://charles-tan.blogspot.com/2008/05/2008529-tabletop-rpg-podcasts.html

There is So much to love about bacon.

Anyway, to bring this back on topic, yes you can find all kinds of RPG podcasts at the aforementioned website. I still maintain there are some that stand out as being particularly good.

Almost as good as the Sons of Kryos is Fear the Boot. Seriously. Good stuff.
