Haha, this one's fun. Juice Newton covering Dave Edmund's pop-a-licious Queen of Hearts. My mom took me with her to see Juice playing at West Point when I was a kid.

Trey |

Oops, sorry Hank DeVito, Edmunds was just the first to cover Queen of Hearts.
Wait, Dave Edmunds? Covers? How about Elvis Costello's Girls Talk? And who's that in the background? Nick Lowe, who penned What's So Funny 'Bout Peace, Love and Understanding that did so well when covered by Elvis Costello himself.
That's Nile Rogers playing with Lowe, but if I start in on a six degrees of Nile Rogers, I'm never going to get out of this post. :-)

1980s synth-pop bands haven't fared all that well since then - when was the last time you put on anything by Thompson Twins, Human League or Kajagoogoo?
The main exception is these guys. BTW, am I the only one who thinks that Johnny Cash's version of "Personal Jesus" is terrible?

Trey |

In 1980, the fading fad of roller skating and the rising fad of music videos overlapped for six minutes and forty-one seconds.

Trey |

I'm going to throw something into the mix. Here's a video about a pet moose with a cute song. Wishing everyone a silly Sunday.

Linked 'em for you.
Face To Face
Curiosity Killed The Cat
Also, while we're at it, let's add some Orchestral Maneouvers In The Dark.

Trey |

Heh, just heard this one on the radio. Frida knows there's something going on. Welcome to the thread, Bling Bling, thanks for the videos and birthday sympathies, and Vattnisse, thanks for the linkification and the OMD!

drunken_nomad |

Oh hell yeah on the Frida! and OMD. Forgot bout them. Never heard of either of Bling Bling's entries. WOW! Crazy stuff.
How about The Gap Band with You Dropped a Bomb on Me.
or
Josie Cotton with Johnny Are You Queer?

Bling Bling |
You know Frida wasn’t the only former ABBA babe with a hit in the 80s. Here’s one from the blonde, Agnetha, called Can’t Shake Loose. Actually, the same guy, Russ Ballard, wrote this hit as well as Frida’s hit plus had a minor hit of his own you may remember called Voices. BTW, read the info for Ballard’s video, if you're interested. I had no idea that guy worked with so many people. Whoa…

Ugh... Gap Band, eh? I'll raise the stakes with the one and only Billy Ocean - featuring the dodgiest backing singers in music history. Nice suits, guys.

Trey |

Time for soul overload. From his tragically interrupted 1982 comeback, the one and only Marvin Gaye. What a voice.

Trey |

I remember getting told to turn this one down on the bus on a school trip. No way, man! It's a hammer in my heart, pounding out your name!
Is this my girlfriend's favorite Utopia video because she is an entomologist? Hmmm....

Drugs! I want a new drug! I thought these guys were the epitome of cool. What the hell was I thinking???

![]() |

Nice Robert Plant link, Trey. Though Led Zeppelin was gone, Deep Purple were still semi-operational in the year 1984.

Trey |

Yeah, that Deep Purple album was some good stuff. I just re-bought Principle of Moments yesterday, after watching the video a few times.
I have to say, though, I don't appreciate YouTube putting in the "related videos" column for Perfect Strangers--Whitesnake. No way, man. Not related at all.
Destination Unknown by Missing Persons was cute (featuring Mrs. Frank Zappa's Drummer), as was the first song I ever heard from another Aussie contribution to band alphabet soup, INXS.

Haha... saw them in concert. "Hey, they sound exactly like the alb....Zzzzzzzzz zzzzz zzzz"

The 'related items' on Youtube sometimes seem pretty weird; my oddest one was being recommended an Aqua tune as I was looking through the catalogue of Swedish black metal geniuses Dissection. All Scandinavian music is apparently alike...
Having said that, I really like the Bernie Marsden/Mickey Moody-period Whitesnake. After that - not so much...

I didn't even know the song you linked to was them. I mostly just associated them with the heavy Zep-ripoff mode and Tawny Kitaen.

Trey |

Just so no one thinks I'm just a retro-80s video guy, I wanted to mention I also like brass bands.
ROCK!
Edit: and a very nice one from the German Brass, as well.

Trey |

Drippy paint cans were really big in the early 80s. At one point, I think like about a third of Canal Jeans' shirt stock had drippy paint cans on it.

MTV way back when was kinda hit and miss.... there was ten tons of crap.
Ooh, I don't know.
When your PCs come back to town, like Mr Billy Big-Balls, you can go "Oh, you want a parade? I'll give you a parade! Gotcha Victory Parade right here!"

I think I got more out of Henry Rollins. His stories were more down to earth - Biafra's was mostly a clever rant about political issues I was already aware of.
But then I always liked Jello's vocals better than Henry's.
When I first went round my girlfriend's house, I saw a copy of 'Plastic Surgery Disasters'.
OKay.
"Bet you haven't got 'Bedtime for Democracy'?"
'Yes'
"With the HR Giger poster?"
'Yes'
<initiate competitive streak>
"Bet you've never heard of 'I Blow Minds For A Living'?"
'Yes'
"Last Scream of the Missing Neighbours?"
'Yes'
"The Sky is Falling (and I Want My Mommy)?"
'Yes'
...and that's one very good reason we're still an item...

One of my favorite videos was Sledgehammer by Peter Gabriel...Where else can you get dancing poultry?
erm...Trixie's Chicken Shack?

![]() |

I had Bedtime for democracy too, but none of the other ones. On the bright side, Joan's looking real good these days!
Here's a great song, posted by some guy who doesn't know how to spell 'fought'.

Poor Christopher Cross is generally regarded as MTV's first victim - he didn't have the looks to keep up with the video kids... Judge for yourself.
Disclaimer: I love this song.

I hear you... it's a crime that pop rock is now handed to cute karioke kids with more hair spray and gel than actual artistic talent. Chris Cross and Carole King couldn't even happen these days.
A CRIME.
I remember hearing Chris on Stern talking about his inspiration for Sailing. He mentioned that during his unhappy teenage years there was this guy that took him under his wing and acted as an older brother... taking him out on the guy's sailboat. Sailing took him away from everything. That someone took the time and showed him something so amazing blew him away, and so he wrote the song. Pure nostalgia. On the show he lamented that he'd lost touch and the guy called the show and they had a conversation and took down each other's info. What a feel good moment. How often do you get the chance to fall back in touch with those you've lost?

Trey |

Hey, and the link to Ride Like the wind got me thinking about Michael McDonald, which got me thinking about Steely Dan (I was going to link Do It Again, but I think McDonald sang backing vocals on Peg, so what the hey.
Am I immature for finding it amusing that the beginning of this Karaoke video credits "What a fool believes" to the Doodie Brothers?

The Jade wrote:How often do you get the chance to fall back in touch with those you've lost? Not often, which is not too surprising considering the number of times I doubled back through the creek.
I discovered Tom, my best friend from my early teens, on the net. He's a brilliant and talented guy and he's successfully pursuing his great talent for music. After reconnecting it became obvious that whatever friendship we had as kids didn't translate to present day, and we politely send emails to one another about once every two years. Still, I'm happy to know he's alive and well.

I recall McDonald sang back-up for Kenny Loggins albums and Loggins sang back-up on McDonald's album as well.
McDonald made Peg with those backgrounds.

I like these. They make me smile.
OK Go doing the treadmill thing.
Machinima of some Warcraft undead rocking the Twisted Transistor
On the subject, I thought this Backstreet Warcraft production was pretty cool, too, if you've seen the original.

Suddenly, I'm thinking about Carl McCoy. One thing leads to another and all that.
What a fantastic opening... pulls you right in.
