Excellent stuff, MZ! I'm curious as to how you constructed the urgulstasta. Looks really good.

I'll admit I was extremely inspired by your work on the arena and the Blackwall Keep you posted last year, along with the fellow who made the Dragotha lair. Since then I've gone styrofoam crazy: I've constructed my own GH arena, the Dark Cathedral from TFoE and working on the Spire of Long Shadows. My players love it and its a lot of fun creating these sets. I have some pics I'd like to show but I'm not sure where I could do this. Is there some place I could post these, besides having my own website?

Nice Luz! I'd love to see the stuff you've done! I need some inspiration myself for some of those upcoming adventures.

I'm not positive, but I think http://photobucket.com hosts images for free if you just sign up.

Oh yeah... I made the Ulgurstasta out of stacked pink foam insulation, glued together and then shaped using a hot-wire foam-cutter. The legs I bastardized from a kit of Starship Troopers bug box from Mongoose Publishing. The eyes are round topped push-pins, and that's pretty much it. Slap on a coat of paint and you're done :)

By the way, after I posted this I saw the one made by Tasmanian_tiger at:

Awesome job Tas... now THAT is a gorgeous (and incredibly accurate) looking Ulgurstasta!!!

Thanks for the link, MZ. I'll try this and see if it works. Here are some shots of the Dark Cathedral and Champion's Belt:

Great way to make such an obscure creature. It has never occured to me to try and make monsters out of this stuff, just sets. Awesome work.

Yeah, I finally got smart and bought a hot-wire foam cutter and hot knife set. The arena and cathedral were cut out using lots of Xacto knives (Uggh! What a mess!)Much easier now. I've finished constructing the Spire of Long Shadows, still got to paint and dress it up though.

I saw that one Tasmanian_tiger made a while ago. Extremely well done!

Wow. Good stuff Trevor! Those long curved walls must have been a b%~&@! Nice touch with the fire in the arena too. I wish I thought of that!

Alas, the heroes have just left the city of Greyhawk and are about to get up close and personal with a nasty black dragon.

Post more pics if you make more. I love seeing this stuff.

Thanx, Derek.I'll do just that after today's game. My group opted not to play AGoW and instead went to check out the Lost Caverns of Tsojcanth for a diversion instead. Once they're done that I'll slide them back to SoLS.

Anyways, I made some of the main chambers for the caverns and have been painting figs like a madman to prepare. We'll take some pics and I'll post 'em later.

I feel like such a lazy DM now! :)

Have you guys ever thought of making a tutorial website?

No, I can't say that I have, Larry. Honestly, I'm not a very computer savvy guy and wouldn't even know where to begin. I just picked up some tips from guys like Derek who had done some of this stuff before me. Basically, for the arena I used:

-sheets of 1" thick insulation foam (found at any hardware store, the denser the better).
-a hot glue gun (normal glue works, just takes longer to dry)
-lots of Xacto blades
-standard house paint (greys and tan colors)

I have since discovered the hot-wire foam cutter, an invaluable tool for this type of thing. If you're going to do this save yourself some grief and a lot of time and buy one of these (craft stores sell them). An electric hot knife also works well. Finally, get some cheap masks to keep yourself from breathing in those nasty fumes!

You don't need an engineering degree, but it takes some planning before you start cutting it out.The amount of detail is really up to you, but I found as I went I kept adding more details simply because it got easier. All in all, the arena took about 20 hours of work.

Hope that helps and good luck!

So, so awesome.

Scarab Sages

Those are some great models; it would be a good idea to set up some curtain or backdrop to screen the shop walls.

The Ulgurstasa reminds me of the Black Beast of Aaaaargh, in Monty Python's Holy Grail!
