"Brace yerself lads," I say with some trepidation as the little monsters flow towards our position.
Has the 'nest' completely morphed into these things or is there still a structure there of sorts?
The three eyeclusters opened like clams but very quickly. They snapped open tearing the sinews that kept them shut and destroying any of the eyeballs that had grown over the seal between the clam shell like carapace.

Round 1:
Stalkercrabs
Kelborn
Klyndak
Hru
More than a dozen tiny crablike creatures leap out of the eyecluster nests or leap down from the ceiling of the elevator shaft. The majority of them target Hru who strikes them as being big and slow-moving. Several of them slide off your armour or get knocked aside before they can do any damage and attempt to scuttle down the side of the shaft between the elevator and the wall.
Klyndak is nipped by the claws of three of them. 6 points of damage. Two of these three hang on to Klyndak. The other is shaken loose.
Although six of them try to get a claw full of half-orc, only three of them manage to draw blood. 3 points of damage. One of these six manages to sink its claws in hard enough to hold on.
Kelborn gets the worst of it. Although only two manage to sink their claws into him, they sink both claws in hard. 7 points of damage. One of these two keeps its grip.
The crabs that fell off attempt to scuttle to the edge like their companions.
So, each of you now has one or more of these fleshy little things hanging onto you. There are several others trying to eat and run.
Rule note:
Anyone know any good rules for adjudicating a 'burrow' attempt on a creature? I'm going to run this like a 'grapple' but reverse the size modifiers as the bigger you are, the more room they have to burrow into you. The critters must make a successful attack before they can attempt to burrow though, so armour is taken into account. If you can suggest a better way of doing it, I'll change it for the next round.
Klyndak
I keep the flaming sphere on the 'nest' just in case there are any more in there and attack the one on me with my warhammer.
Attack: (1d20+7=17)
Damage: (1d8+3=11)
"Don't let 'em be eatin' yer 'ead's lads!"

Hardie har har. You wanna state your actions now that your shoes are spiffy?
Tarren the Dungeon Master
Reacting poorly to the creature hanging onto his flesh, Kelborn reacts how anyone attacked by creepy crawlie things might: by grabbing at the things and attempting to throw them off.
What should I roll? Grapple?
If you are trying to grab it, roll a grapple. If you want to hit it, roll an attack.

Hru deftly brings his sword around in a shaving-like maneuver to attempt to scrape the beastie off.
not this round
That's a 1 by the way...maybe I shouldn't have used the term shaved. I have been thinking about the grapple question (just to change the subject from my critical miss) Some creatures like an Ooze grapple if they make their normal attack (in that case slam) it's sort of an improved grapple. This would mean the crab would get automatic grapple which the opponent would have to break(or Escape Artist) or they burrow in next round. Or alternately you could do something fort save related. If they always attack in groups you may want to look into some kind of swarm mechanic, as it would be difficult to break more than 1 grapple per round
Orlan
For DM:
When you entered the cave the sun was still out. It's dark now and Quarrel isn't anywhere to be seen. He left more soup though.
Orlan shudders as he sees more of the soup. "Better be stayin' away from more o' that," the dwarf mutters as he rubs his rumbling stomach. Shuffling to his feet, he checks all of his gear and looks around once more for any sign of Quarrel. Finally giving up on the bugbear, Orlan decides to renew his journey and head back to the Spires.
From now on, Orlan gets +2 on knowledge checks on any question related to the spires or his clan's history. Call it a bonus trait.
Cool. Nice bonus trait.
Also, I noted the further explanation on the hallucination. A human led some giants against the fortress long ago. Seems like the dwarves were once slaves and used to build the Spires. Lots to consider there.
Final round of RPG Superstar. Remember to vote.
Somehow, I don't think I need that reminder. ;-D

I think a fortitude save is a good idea. The crab should have to make a CM check and if the grapple successful the opponent needs to make a fortitude save or else the crab is inside. (This would give things like dragons some defense.) Also, though it did not come up this time, crabs invading an opponents space to attempt a burrow cause an AoO.

I was going to make it a 'burrow' check (similar to a grapple) and on the second round it has to sustain it's 'burrow' (with a +5 modifier similar to a grapple. Escape artist, damage, or your own grapple check could prevent that. A fortitude save would give you less of a chance than what I described since the DC is 15+CMB and your fortitude save is 1d20+FORT. I think I'll stick with the one that gives you the best chance.
Hru, you rolled a 1 while running a sword against your own flesh? You know I gotta do something about that, right? Roll a DC 10 reflex save to avoid slicing your own boobie off.

Klyndak kills one stalker crab but another remains. The remaining stalkercrab hanging off Klyndak finds it difficult to discern beard and body hair from flesh and ends up burrowing into his beard. It is getting closer to your neck though.
Kelborn and Hru both fail to rid themselves of their stalkercrabs. The two crabs begin to claw away and burrow down.
3 points of damage each. You get one more shot before any attack on these guys does damage to you as well.
Klyndak
Though the angle is ackward, I attempt to sweep the crab in my beard away with my hammer.
Hammer Attack: (1d20+7=15)
Damage: (1d8+3=5)
"Argh, itsa goin' fer me throat lads. Use me fire to burn them off iffin' ye can."
It might be worthwhile for a really tough individual to plunge himself into the ball of fire, assuming the monsters will die first... Not that I'm keen on trying that myself... But it beats catching crabs and being zombified.

Do you lose your dex bonus to AC when you are trying to burrow? Can you attack a tiny creature in your beard with a giant hammer? Does the beard provide cover? Too many questions!
Hru Gorumgrag
Hru cries out to Gorum "Cleansing blade of Gorum, rid me of this foulness!" as he once again attempts an intricate shaving-like maneuver with the huge blade.
To his mind unbidden comes a random thought "I wonder if my brother Golg ever had crabs?"
Shaking off the thought he concentrates again on the task at hand.
attack, damage on crab-spider-burrowey thing 1d20+7=10, 2d6+6=14

You're keeping track of your hit points, right Hru? This could get painful.
Kelborn
Tarren the Dungeon Master
Klyndak manages to knock the critter out of his beard and send it flying. It smushes as it hits the wall. Maybe Hru will find out if stalkercrabs are edible later. For now, however, Hru has a more serious problem. The stalkercrab attacking him has burrowed beneath his flesh. 4 more points of damage. Removing it without hurting Hru is going to be impossible. Kelborn's stalkercrab has mistaken leather for flesh and has succeeded in burrowing into a belt. Kelborn's pants may fall down but he suffers no more damage yet.
Kelborn
Seeing the creature burrow into the belt allows Kelborn a moment of relief, which quickly disappears when he realizes that the creature is still alive.
Attack & Damage: 1d20+6=12, 1d8+3=9
Damn you, Invisible Castle!
Hru Gorumgrag
Being both raised by orcs, and a warrior-priest of Gorum, Hru quickly realizes what must be done. His eyes flick quickly from his belt where it seems like eons ago, once hung a utilitarian dagger.
Jumping back from the spider things, he scans the area for something useful. Reigning in the pain with his iron will, he calls out "A DAGGER, BY GORUM! I NEED A DAGGER.....ARRGH!!"
Then turning his sword skillfully (perhaps as no other, with such a cumbersome weapon)he plunges it into where the thing has burrowed in!
this is going to hurt 1d20+7=8, 2d6+6=15
NOOOOOOOO!! Ouch I'd imagine that I take ~cringe~ 15 damage plus whatever the crab does... ~shakes fist in air~ "CURSE YOU! INVISIBLE CASTLE!"
Tarren the Dungeon Master
Kelborn's crab finally manages to tear a hole in his flesh to burrow into. 2 points of damage, Kelborn.
Hru, seeing a bulge in his chest stabs at it but injures himself badly. 15 from your own sword plus 2 from the crab.
Bet you wish you could channel negative energy now, eh? Oddly enough an evil priest would be a great healer at this point. Maybe you want to switch out for a smaller weapon.
Hru Gorumgrag
I realized that I had lost my dagger (if I ever had one...but who doesn't-me that's who) a while ago hopefully one of my comrades has one...but I didn't want to wait til one eye was goggling out like that kobold...sometimes you just have to take your lumps
Hru drops his greatsword, the pain of that seeming even worse than the pain he had just inflicted on himself.
Blood-foam flecks shoot in all directions as he struggles to control the pain and rid himself of the evil parasite. "Aaaargh! a dagger! Someone!!"
Kelborn
Kelborn's crab finally manages to tear a hole in his flesh to burrow into. 2 points of damage, Kelborn.
Is it beneath my flesh now? Regardless...
Kelborn drops his sword, realizing that he will need more finesse for the task ahead. He pulls his dagger from his belt, and turns it toward himself, just as he hears Hru screaming for a dagger.
For a moment he considers.
Then, after a sharp pain from the crab-thing, he mutters "Sorry, Hru," just before a last-ditch effort to stab the crab within.
Attack & Damage: 1d20+5=13, 1d4+3=5
I posit that Invisible Castle is broken! I haven't rolled over 10 with either of my PbP characters in over a week! ;P

As Kelborn fails to stab it, the crablike creature slips under his flesh. 4 points of damage ... Now, like Hru, any damage you do to it, you also do to yourself.
Klyndak can see the crab like creatures sliding beneath the flesh of his two compatriots. The crabs are working their way up to his friends' necks.
Kelborn
Grimacing and trying as hard as he can to fight the pain, Kelborn will tell himself that stabbing himself will hurt significantly less than the crab tearing at his insides, and attempts to get at the thing through his own flesh.
Attack & Damage: 1d20+5=12, 1d4+3=4
I only succeed at doing 4 damage to myself. Kelborn is starting to look very cut up.
*sigh* Go to Invisible Castle and search for Kelborn. Hilarity ensues.
Hru Gorumgrag
Hru draws a ragged breath and calms himself. The voice of Gorum rippling through his the canyons of his mind.
"Lay thy hand on the neck of thine enemies......"
Then it comes to him and he focuses the power of Gorum on the creature within him.
It is true that I don't have negative channel, but I had forgotten completely about my DOMAIN POWERS (mostly cause someone wielding a greatsword doesn't have much use for touch spells) Hru will cast Inflict Light Wounds on the creature. Just let me know if I have to make a Concentration...er Spellcraft ck. 1d20+7=10, 1d8+4=9 that's a touch attack, (and a crappy roll at that)
Orlan
Before you take any more actions, maybe Klyndak has an idea.
I certainly hope so! Or Orlan's going to get back to the Spires and find all his friends dead from self-inflicted wounds!
Reminder:
Just a quick reminder for anyone who hasn't voted in the RPG Superstar competition. Today's the last day. And the exit polls still look pretty close. So, if you like my entry, please consider casting a vote for it. Thanks. :-)
Klyndak
I don't have a dagger... just a ball of fire.
"Burn 'em off lads," I suggest again, this time with a little more urgency, "Like ticks!"
I direct the ball of fire to a spot between or next to both Hru and Kelborn.
Meanwhile, I attempt to attack one of crabs on Hru which has not yet managed to burrow in but my subconscious fear of hurting him holds my hand back from effectiveness.

Not entirely fond of the idea, Kelborn hesitates at first. Upon feeling the next sharp pain, however, he realizes that at this point, he is willing to try anything.
He jumps in.
Reflex Save: 1d20+7=9
Ouch...
Kelborn
Letting out a blood-curdling scream as the flames engulf him, he lets out another cry as the thrashing inside him gets more intense for a moment.
Then a the deepest sigh of relief escapes his mouth when he realizes that the thrashing has ceased.
Are there any crabs that are not attached to Klyndak or Hru?

Nope. The crabs that fell off fled. They're probably around somewhere.

Only one crab managed to grab ahold of Hru. You're swinging your hammer at an imaginary crab. I do the same thing with spiders.
