Excellent! I choose option 2 btw. My live action group will go Pathfinder RPG and an online gaming group with my childhood friends will go 4E.

"I may rise, but I refuse to shine!" ;)

j/k. :) Hooray for being awesome!

Wait, Sebastian is being the voice of reason and moderation? *Blackdragon wanders off to find his ice skates now that Acheron has frozen over.*

(In all seriousness, Well said.)

Very well put. These are words our community MUST live by.

We are better than what other boards accuse us of being.

Wow Sebastian, I'm impressed. This post of yours is more hippie-hug-a-tree-love-thy-neighbor-esque than both my roommate and my mother combined.

(Okay well it wasn't quite that sappy, but the compliment still stands.)

Great post, Sebastian. Just to tell you, it has even been linked to a german board (where it will hopefully lead to a bit of thinking :) )

best regards,
Wormy

Scarab Sages

all right, who spiked the cool-aid?

Sebastion, you scare me. A lawyer preaching for peace, love and understanding? shudder.

As for your post, I guess the only responsible thing to do is to shine. But if the naysayers on EnWorld or Wotc get too out of hand, can we at least up the wattage and shine in their eyes for awhile? :)

Hate to say....I don't really like bashing but I sure feel stupid holding all those 3.5 books after spending an untold fortune. I am left with no desire for 4th Edition, purely on the fact that I am so vested in another game system (that its creators abandoned).

Thanks to Paizo!
I feel like a rusty robot that has been refurbished and described as being a better robot for having the stronger "nuts & bolts" of my next generation version.

I have no love for 4th Edition because it seeks to isolate and alienate the value and versatility of what I have already spent my hard earned cash on. I can be upset, because I paid these people to much money for a way of life that they decided to end abruptly. So yeah, good will to all and may 3.5 conquer so I may share my rich library with all those younger sets that would appreciate it, or not.

I don't see this as an alternate gaming system, it is the gaing system.

This was not a rant, but rather a way to describe why one should feel the desire to rant, and be right in doing so.

Er... did you read the first post?

Shine, please. Shine. :D

I will shine... like a big fat sun....

Eer, yea, I did. Sorry, but I am hoping for 4th Edition to go down in smoke (though I know it won't by the shear momentum of money behind it). I guess you would have to say that I don't want to be like those 1.0/2.0 guys that talk about, "How 3.x ruined their ability to play the game because everyone else was playing 3.x".

"Do you hear that Mr. Anderson? It is the sound of inevitability. The sound of your death."

Me too, pass the tissue dammit!

Let's decide to shine? COME ON!

One passionate, insult-fueled rant might get a post pulled and start a long thread of people trying to keep things civil. But a touchy-feely post like that creates pages of people saying "Ya, what he said. Go Seb!" That's 50+ posts of people with absolutely nothing to add to the conversation.

Give me passion and give me vitriol. Am I the only one that feels this way? Call me a WoW-playing miscreant if you have to, but at least invest yourself in the cause.

It's great that Paizo is breaking off and releasing their own game. I wouldn't want to gamble my existence on the WotC release schedule either. Seriously, I'm happy for everyone who invested heavily in Pathfinder-related material that Golarion will survive. Personally, I'm more of a core rules guy and don't buy into all hype over accessories and background info. I don't see the big difference between running a game in Greyhawk or Golarion. If the adventure path calls for a race of Ewoks, I'll just throw in a new continent and a reason for them to migrate over to Sasserine. Every Greyhawk is a little different anyway.

I'm excited enough about some of the changes in 4E that I'm planning to buy the PHB in June and was hoping Paizo would send me an adventure path, but I guess that's not to be. Hopefully, I'll find a reasonable substitute so I can actually try the new system. Not that it's Paizo's fault if I can't. If my group does not enjoy 4E for whatever reason, I'll go back and play another 3.5 AP. Even if 4E is great, I might go back anyway if there are just no viable campaign-length adventures to run. I'm not closing the door on Paizo, but right now there is nothing I really feel like I want to buy. But I'm not an expert on their product line. Is there anything besides the actual APs that you guys find indispensable? Let me know.

I'll take a look through the suggested house rules pdf and maybe try out a few in my Shackled City game, but I'm not a huge fan of alpha releases or open playtests. At least it's a free download. Is every PbP from now on going to start with a list of which house rules will be in effect?

We have invested ourselves in the cause of not unnecessarily fracturing the gaming community by being jerks to each other when there is a much better option--civility.

Being passionate isn't about acting recklessly without regards for others, it's simply following your heart. In regards to the "edition wars," my heart doesn't care for 4e and instead choose to continue to support Paizo. So, here I am. Doing just that. However, that doesn't preclude me from wishing those who choose adopt 4e happiness in their choice, or even wishing success for 4e (a success for D&D is a success for the gaming industry).

You make a lot of sense, Sebastion. I never thougth I'd say that! Anyway, as soon as I heard about the Pathfinder RPG, 4th edition pretty much dropped of off my list of things to be concerned about. If people want to play 4th edition (DDM 2.1) then more power to them. If they want to play Pathfinder, that's great, as well! For those that want to play both, I say, "Game on!"

even though i loathe wizards of the coast and totally hate the entire idea behind the mechanics of 4th edition......i have to admit the guy makes sense. there's no way any game that even smells like dnd 3.5 has a chance. wotc has too much money and too much clout in the industry. sadly 4th edition is the way to go.....for now.......it'll turn out like 2nd edition....gag; throw up; throw away the books.......oh wait planescape was cool.....for five minutes.
and yes.....i ramble.......wah

Good speech, Sebastian. Go for an encore!

Posting without being inflammatory is against my nature, so bear with me as I try to eek this out. The way I see it, we've got two choices: We can shame or we can shine.

Though I may help Sebastian from time to time when he misquotes movies, I don't share his views on 4E. Thankfully, I do share his views on what we as a gaming public can do about the situation we find ourselves in. At this point in time, both sides of the gaming community have gotten a piece of what they want: the continuance of their preferred gaming system. The 4E folks get the new version WotC produces, and the 3.5ers get the Pathfinder system. My money will be supporting the system I prefer, but I can respect my fellow gamers' desire to play what they like, and as much as I might find the 4E system to be distasteful, I realize that's just my viewpoint, and agree that we all don't need to be tearing down someone else's system in presenting our own views.

Thank you Sebastian. You have managed to shine, and encourage a long string of posters to be as inclusive and welcoming as you are. We really do have an embarrassment of riches, many times over. I had to look up your name in my dictionary of saints to see which other wonderful miracles you will perform. Shine on!

Cheers

Lately, thanks to all the hate from all ends and all the many RPGs and all the 3.0, 3.5, 3.75, 4e, soon to be 4.5e and eventually a 5e, and WotC making Tabletop gaming like CCGs...I seem to have just plumb forgot and lost all idea of what sort of identity Dungeons&Dragons was supposed to have anyway?

What is D&D again? I really can't recall anymore.

Maybe it's time for World of Warcraft.....

Shine!

Remember when you were young, you shone like the sun.
Shine on you crazy astral diamond.
Now there's a look in your eyes, like black holes in the sky.
Shine on you crazy astral diamond.
You were caught on the crossfire of childhood and stardom,
blown on the steel breeze.
Come on you target for faraway laughter,
come on you stranger, you legend, you martyr, and shine!
You reached for the secret too soon, you cried for the moon.
Shine on you crazy astral diamond.
Threatened by shadows at night, and exposed in the light.
Shine on you crazy astral diamond.
Well you wore out your welcome with random precision,
rode on the steel breeze.
Come on you raver, you seer of visions,
come on you Rpger, you Wargamer, you WOW, and shine!

Scarab Sages

Yay Sebastian!
