4E Conversion: Burnt Offerings (Pathfinder 1)

4th Edition

Scott, I've been reading Tales from the Rusty Dragon with great interest. My party just got through the skill challenges and is about to enter the Glassworks. I see you haven't posted since Aug 9, though. Have you abandoned the campaign?
I changed the Goblin in the Closet to be a Bugbear Strangler, since it seemed very Stranglery in its conduct. But I changed around a lot of things. I had two "prequel" encounters before the campaign itself started because I had 2 players who couldn't join until mid-August, but I wanted to start out the other players and get in some experience myself before then. So I had a group of goblins attack an inn, and then I fleshed out Goblin in the Closet and had the creature (and his Goblin Minion, er, minions) terrify the hapless village of Ambridge that they were passing through.
I had my own skill challenges which I won't post, because I have the entire campaign set in a fantasy 12th century Dartmoor rather than Paizo's campaign world. Nothing against the fine work Paizo has done with its campaign world, it's just that I had the world in my mind already, just no adventures for it.

I apologize for the lack of updates. It's worth noting that the August 9th update actually went up much later than that. I create posts and save them as drafts first as I work on the conversion, and then revise them and actually post them once I've run my own players through that portion of the adventure. The date on the post is actually set when it is first saved as a draft, not when it is first published, so almost invariably the date is earlier than when it was actually made available on the blog.

I have been in Seattle for the last week at the Penny Arcade Expo, so I haven't been able to update the blog or work on the conversion. Rest assured, though, a large amount of material will go up this week. My game is tomorrow, so expect an update following that. Thanks for checking it out!

I figure I should chime in again. My PCs are now at Thistletop. The vargouilles in the Catacombs of Wrath gave them trouble, and I ended up using Erylium and Koruvus together (great aoe's against a group of eight characters). Tsuto ran away from the fight in the Glassworks, where the PCs came in from two directions, and got hammered by goblin skullcleavers that held doors and prevented them from aiding one another. The party reached 3rd level at this point.

I haven't created any new monsters, although I wish I had done something more for the goblin dogs than using wolf stats. For the Gogmurt encounter I used slightly altered Kobold Rat Master and the Kobold Horde (refugees) from Dragon 364's Creature Incarnations. For Ripnugget I used Goblin Underboss. Stickfoot used Dire Boar stats. Goblin Sharpshooters and transformed Kobold Pikers defended the stockade.

The party has just entered the first level of dungeon. They surprised Tsuto and dropped him like a chump, but were ambushed by Brutzamus (Bugbear Strangler) and the harem wives (Bugbear Thugs lowered to level 2). It looks like the party will fight through with nary a scratch.

I think I'm going to stage one big boss encounter with Orik, Nualia, Lyrie, and so on. That should be plenty to send the group on to 4th level and into the next adventure.

Picking treasure is getting easier as I go. Most of the players have made wish lists. I run one encounter a week at lunch, and the players level up once every four weeks, so each encounter yields two magic items typically.

I'm playing fast and loose with the maps from the campaign. Rather than searching room by room we tend to move right to the next action scene (fight or skill challenge). I've been picking out interesting maps from Map Packs or Fantastic Locations for each of the fights.

Just stopping in to say that Tales from the Rusty Dragon has been updated with the first part of Thistletop. Next week will be the goblin fortress atop the island.

Very nice.

I especially like the druid.

Scott, my group has really been enjoying your 4e conversion so far.
I'm about to insert some extra encounters in the wilderness before Thistletop, and I was wondering where you got the templates for the JPEGs of your custom monsters. They'd be kinda useful for me.

Yeah Scott. This is really good work.

Scott has just finished posting the conversion of Burnt Offerings.

FYI.

Yep, it's done. The whole adventure, minus a couple entries in the bestiary I want to churn out that don't actually make an appearance in the adventure itself.

If you want to run Burnt Offerings in 4th Edition, it's there for you. Enjoy!

Already started on the conversion of The Skinsaw Murders.
