Zereta chuckles at tobin frankness towards the muscled man. And then looks to Kells "I think its my round of ale to buy" waves over the maid "Another round for my friends and bring me some of the food your bringing Tobin...oh and while your at it get an ale for the warrior" points at muscled warrior. "Join us would like," Zereta smiles at the warrior "By the way we haven't been properly introduced I am Zereta Bludwulf and you are?"

"But this is heavy talk... we should be enjoying new company this night." Kells signals a bargirl "It is high time for that second round, Zereta."

"Fair enough," Kessel says with a dismissive wave, "I'm only trying to do my part. I try to discourage anyone thinking of getting involved with the mines and try to talk them into a more honorable and reputable line of work . . . like grave robbing or prostitution."

Tobin wrote:

"An excellent idea, Kells," Tobin agrees, "some more drinks to lift our spirits and cement our friendship! I believe there was some talk of food, too?" Tobin asks the bargirl to bring a large pot of something nourishing and spicy to the table.

"But, you know, I think Darie may be on to something. We do resemble one of those ragtag bands in the stories. We all seem to be looking for a change in our lives, and the lives of those around us. Perhaps we could get somewhere if we worked together? We even have our own chronicler!" Tobin smiles at KC. "But how to go about it...?"

Tobin leans back in his chair and looks over at the muscular man that Khadath spoke to. "What do you say, sir? How can a band of misfits go about making their fortune and setting the world to rights?"

"You suggestion of food sounds very agreeable to me. As to your question, it depends, are you talking about real life or the stories? In the ballads there's often some great prophecy of doom or pestilence to stop or there's the ruins of some ancient civilization nearby to plunder, in reality such things almost never happen, making a fortune takes hard work and dedication . . . or you need to be born into it."

Khadath glances from Kessel to Auric, wondering if Kessel knew something that the others did not, as he wasn't sure if the statement was meant against Auric. Though now his interest was peaked to learn more about Auric. He also suspected that such information would be of some interest to Darie.

Darie sighed wistfully as Kessel mentioned being born into riches and comfort. It seemed all too hard to get there sometimes. But then, the rich didn't become rich without merit. Their parents and grandparents probably worked their fingers to the bone to accumulate and increase that wealth.

"Well, i for one would be willing to give pretty much anything a shot. I've spend much more time than i like to doing odd jobs for coppers."

Kessel hasn't looked at Auric sense he entered. Kessel was likely making the statement in general . . . or perhaps he was referring to the late Duke whom Kessel mentioned earlier.

"The only real trick is finding something lacking in a town and filling that roll, or finding something you're good at and doing it better then anyone else. Easier said then done though."

Kessel rolls his eyes. What was it about muscles that made women swoon?

Kells stretches languidly, casually rolling his sleeve back to show the definition of his arm. Although not as hulking as Auric, Kells is very strong and well defined.

"I don't know, but it seems to work now and then. But not nearly so much as actually being able to talk to the fairer persuasion."

Oops, Kessel was actually thinking that last line hence the lack of "quotes"

Smiling warmly, Auric bows his head in greeting to the group. "Well met" Sinking into an offered seat he looks thoughtfully around the group, listening to their conversation before speaking up.

"If you think you're strong enough for adventuring, then go for it!" he informs the group, his gaze travelling over the defined musculature of Zereta and Kells for a moment before grinning "But of course you'll need to find some sort of treasure within your reach."

Shaking her head a bit the Elven woman grabs a spare chair and moves it beside Auric's. "And you accuse me of encouraging too many rival parties" She declares with an amused smirk.

"Hey!" Auric objects with a hint of laughter in his tone "As long as they don't go to the Stirgenest Cairn I fail to see how it effects what we're here for"

The elf rolls her eyes and looks long suffering. "One of these days Khellek is going to kill you for giving away so many of his plans" She informs him a little flatly.

Knowledge Local - DC 10:

Spoiler:
The Stirgenest cairn is southeast of Daggerford and is often explored by local youths and found devoid of any marvels and perfectly harmless.

But now you think on the topic of cairns there is another cairn frequented by the local youths. About a day's ride to the west is the Whispering Cairn. It was rediscovered by a teenager about a decade ago and ever since it has become a mark of bravery for children to sneak through the weeds and debris that cover the entrance to the cairn and to disappear into the cairn's entrance.

Occasionally when the wind is just right, haunting, almost magical tones emerge from the depths of the tomb and whilst you know of many children who have entered the cairn you know of nobody who's explored it fully.

Male Halfling Rogue/1

"Of course, we have no intention of stepping on your toes, either literally or figuratively," Tobin assures Auric, "especially after you've done us the honour of joining our table and giving us your advice. I give you my word that I won't go to the Stirgenest Cairn while you are in town, and I'm sure my friends will do likewise. Besides, we wouldn't want to anger the mysterious and solitary Khellek!" Tobin smiles at the elven woman. "You are most welcome at out table, too, milady. I am Tobin Longbottom, at your service. Do you have any advice for us, if we decide to try our hands at adventuring?"

Female Human Sorcerer (Infernal) 2

Darie nodded "Fair is fair, you can have that Cairn all for yourself. Honestly, thanks for the encouragement, though." She wasn't all that well-informed about local events, though - so the announcement that this particular old grave held treasures was a surprise to her.

She looked around her "friends" (distant acquaintances was more like it at this point), and suddenly seriously considered the option of trying their hands on some "adventuring". Things where really not all that far from the tales of minstrels... even though a businessmen rarely figured into these tales.

Male Human Paladin / 1

Kells laughs good-naturedly "Not that the name Stirgenest doesn't conjure up visions of heady rewards, but I think we can promise not to intrude on your efforts there. Personally, I hate the thought of the disgusting little bat mosquito critters. Anyway, we aren't really a stalwart band of adventurers like yourself. Heck, some of us are just meeting for the first time. Although, it could be a bit of a lark to go wandering about. Maybe we can fuel a saga for Kessel!"

Female Human Sorcerer (Infernal) 2

"Well, the Gnome Matchmaker was probably my one chance to get out of this town on some halfway legitimate means, and by legitimate i mean "way my parents would understand, if not condone". Seems like going on some "profitable suicide opportunity" isn't actually the worst idea. Either you strike it rich, and don't have much trouble anymore - or you don't have trouble anymore either" Darie replied, to noone in particular. Either the ale was loosening her tongue already, or else her mood was growing brighter for some other reason.

"So the mighty Auric is here to loot the local cairns?" Kessel says, "Normally I'd be interested at the prospect, might make for an interesting tale, but I don't know anything about this Stirgenest Cairn, and that likely means that it's likely a dead end. Tell me though, why would you think that there's anything worth exploring in these hills?"

Male Human (Calimshan) Cleric 1

Khadath sat back nurturing his ale and listened as the group socialized with the new arrivals. The notion of adventuring wasn’t an alien thought for him as this was the time of learning and experiencing new things for him. There is a period of time that most clerics are expected to see the world as it truly is. For some that meant righting wrongs and impacting the world in some fashion. For others it was simply spreading word of their god, healing diease, the injured and generally helping those in need when possible. Adventuring was another way for a Cleric to do good, supporting others willing to eliminate an evil or deal with some general threat that endangered the populace served the same purpose but in a boarder aspect than going from city to city spreading one gods teachings. Even if those people that benefit from it never became aware of it, to serve is to serve, and it brings its own reward.

Khadath glanced at Kells and thought of their earlier talk. What the paladin briefly spoke of was this very same thing, to help those in need in a board aspect. He had told Kells earlier that one man alone could do very little, but he had failed to mention that every person did make a difference, even those with him at this very table would make good allies in Kells quest. A twinkle sprang across Khadath eye as he recalled of another cairn in the area called the Whispering Cairn. Such an expedition as this could well be the seed that would one day grow into a strong tree. Khadath had decided right then that once Auric and his female companion had departed he would purpose the idea to the others, simply for the sake so that everyone could firsthand experience what the life of an adventurer was like.

Khadath did not know whom this Khellek was but he was grateful to him for hiring Auric and his loose tongue.

Smiling warmly the elven woman inclines her head in a small bow of greeting in the halfling's direction. "It's a pleasure to meet you Tobin Longbottom, I'm Tirra" She introduces herself in a light, enchanting voice.

Auric tenses a little at Kessel's words and shakes his head a bit. "We're not here to 'loot' anything. Khellek, Tirra and I have travelled together for a while. Khellek wants to visit these places to learn more about Faerun's past, to discover ancient glyphs and artifacts for their historical worth. I'm here for his protection, yes I'm paid but we all need to make a living" He explains a little defensively.

Kessel scratches his head as if confused.

"You won the champion's belt last year didn't you? I thought that had a sizable purse attached to it. I would have thought a man like yourself would stay and remain the toast of the city, perhaps take a comfy commission somewhere, and perhaps start training for next session. I'm a but surprised to see you out in this backwater burg looking for etchings and trinkets . . . at the very least I'd have thought you'd be off doing something grand. I guess adventuring is more humbling then glorious most of the time."

Female Human Sorcerer (Infernal) 2

"Well, i guess anyone needs to live. It is even charming in a way - that even well-known champions like you have a human side like this." Darie's flattery was rather sincere. It really made the champion more human in her eyes. Still, it was as much smoothening the situation as anything else.

Male Human Paladin / 1

Kells is noticably surprised by the revelation that Auric is reknown. "I didn't realize... What a distinct pleasure it is to be sharing a mug with a Champion of Waterdeep. Well, Auric, let me get you next tankard and toast your future success in the games, should you choose to participate."

Kells moves over to ask the bartender for a few more tankards and takes the opportunity to give a critical appraisal of the big fighter and his companion [Detect Evil]. It could be that these two might make allies in his future plans.

Zereta observes silently as she continues to down her ale. A smile comes to her face when kells heads to the bar to get more ale, she makes a mental note to get the next few rounds of ale. She then stands up and moves over to the bar beside kells feigning the need for another ale. She briefly glances back towards the group before turning away and whispers to Kells "So what do you think of our two interesting visitors?"

Auric shakes his head at Kessel's words. "Being the 'toast of the city' and living in too much comfort tends to be counterproductive to training. There are very few who have landed good blows on me in the arena so I travel to find new challenges to continue my training. And as to the money, to enter the games a group must be sponsored by a noble house, a substantial chunk goes to manager then the rest of the prize is to be shared amongst the group of gladiators. Then of course there is the cost of keeping your weapons and armour up to par. Trust me when I say being a gladiator of any level isn't glamourous. Fun, yes. A good challenge, yes. But far from glamourous."

He smiles faintly at the bard before turning his attention to Kells. "Thank you, and I will be sure to pay for the next round" He informs the other man easily and brightly "You should consider visiting Waterdeep to see the Champion's Games, I will be defending my belt upon the Field of Triumph and it should be good to watch."

Kells:

Spoiler:
Neither of the pair of visiting adventurers are evil.

Male Human Paladin / 1

Kells shrugs at Zereta's question "They themselves are not evil, but I can't acertain thier agenda or honesty. Auric seems
congenial enough and the girl is a bit cagey. Nothing wrong with that, just an observation. I think he might be a little sweet on Darie. Which could be very beneficial if he is less cagey than his friend there."

I tried a Sense Motive for Auric and got an 11...

Female Human Sorcerer (Infernal) 2

As the second round of drinks (courtesy of Zereta) arrived, Darie took a deep sip. The drink went down well, and she could not help but gift another smile to Auric. A hard days work, new friends. Maybe even a new "birth" into another life. It was a blessed occasion... Lathander might even be watching them that very moment.

"I will certainly be there to watch you, if i at all manage. Of course, if our little expedition ends up in getting us all horribly slain, i will try to spare you my presence." She chuckled, and despite the serious subject the remark came off as a joke.

Kessel turns his head away from Auric so the big man can't see Kessel roll his eyes sarcastically.

'Gee,' Kessel thinks, 'being a bard I know nothing about noble patronage! He must really think that the lot of us just fell off the turnip cart. If he was victorious in the arena it's a safe bet he wasn't sponsored by some fool half-wit with more money then brains, most of these nobles know a good investment when they see one, and their's no way under the sun that they'd let their investment to go to pot. There's something going on behind the scenes here for sure . . . does he not realize that he's contradicted himself in the space of a few words? First there are "very few that have landed a good blow . . ." but then, scarcely a full thought later, fighting in the arena is "a good challenge"

'Still,' Kessel thinks, 'best not to get involved. Or anger the brute for that mater, he seems friendly enough now, but I have no doubt that he'd mop the floor with me if he decided to get violent. Best play along and act friendly . . .'

Kessel turns back the gladiator.

"Well my good man you'd know best," Kessel says with fake laugh, "I've only experienced the carnage from the safety of the stands, and although I appreciate your offer, you'd be far more likely to see me in the arena then ever in the stands again! And in case you mistake my word, or think of me as some sort of master swordsman, let me be clear: I'm happy with my existence here, I like Daggerford, and I think I've seen enough of the big city to last a life time."

Kessel then turns to Tirra.

"I'm sorry, I don't think we've been properly introduced, I'm Kessel Cobey, I think I heard your name was Tirra? You don't particularly look like a Khellek to me."

The goblins ate my first reply this morning (big news eh?).

Kessel isn't trying to be an ass to Auric but he can't help it, something about the guy bothers him. Kessel thought the Free city was behind him but now he finds that part of that city has come to him :(

Khadath starts coughing as he chokes a bit on his ale as he was quite unprepared for Kessel’s comment

”cough.., cough.., ummm.., excuse me…, Kessel, a bit of warning if you will for those of us that may already have tankard to lip.“ he says laughing and smiling through the whole experience.

"Well between you and I, lets keep our eyes and ears open cause I am not sure what to think of this muscled man...he is kinda cute but all this talk of raiding local burial cairns doesn't sit right with me...seems like their only here to exploit our town..." Zereta glances over at the group again as her mug is refilled. She looks at Kells "You, I think I can trust...anyone who will stands and fights against me and then offers a hand of friendship and an ale to boot, will get my friendship in return..." Zereta smiles as she pays the bartender for the current round of drinks.

Kessel gives Khadath a sly smile and a wink but keeps his eyes to Tirra as he's anxious to hear what she has to say.

Auric smiles at Darie and bows his head a little in silent thanks of her offer to at least try to visit the Coty of Splendors to see him fight. As Kessel speaks again he returns his focus to the bard, seemingly oblivious to the other man's dislike of him. "That's a shame to hear, it's always a joy to see a new gladitorial team in the games. Still, I understand that the city life isn't for everyone." He remarks vaguely before turning his attention to his drink.

Whilst Auric doesn't seem to be the sharpest knife, there's something in Tirra's smile that seems to imply she's a lot brighter and more aware of those sat around her. "It's a pleasure to meet you Mr. Cobey, I'm Tirra Shaali.. And thank you, I'd hate to think that I looked like a 'Khellek'." She comments smoothly with a smirk "Especially our Khellek"

Kells raises one of the mugs off of the tray and holds it up to clink against Zereta's "To many more skirmishes and rounds of refreshment following." Then drinks a deep pull. "Let's return to our companions. I just wanted some distance where I could sniff them out in my own way."

Kells heads to the table and sets out fresh mugs for everyone. "Well, Auric, if you aren't engaged in exploration one of these days, perhaps you can join Zereta and I in some sparring down by the river. Personally, I would love the opportunity to learn some combat tricks and tactics from a standing Champion!"

Kells laughs and leans down closer to Tobin to "whisper" in a voice that carries clearly across the table. "And sometimes you need to treat a lady with delicacy and courtesy, and sometimes you use a warhammer. Deflate 'em a little bit... sails, lungs, whichever, just take some of the hot air out."

He shakes his head, chuckling "No, I was there to exploit the opening you left, but I had misread you, though. I thought you were going to swing to the lower than you did and I almost stepped into it. So there was some luck involved. That's why I love sparring though... learning to read an opponent better. Next time it may well be me on my butt in the dust with the shiner on my ribs or a goose-egg on my forehead. But, better to take you lumps from you friends in practice than from you rival in battle, eh?"

He holds out his mug for another clink against Zereta's.

"It's a sensible practice that," Kessel says, "observing rather then partaking in violence, but I suppose not hitting ladies with war-hammers is also a good habit to adopt . . . now as too the 'lady' status of our Zereta, well that still remains to be debated . . ."

Kessel keeps a cautious eye on Zereta just in case she decides to retaliate with good natured violence (as was sometimes the case when they were children). Kessel (being smallish) isn't a big drinker and is still working on his second drink. If the opportunity should present itself Kessel will switch to something non-alcoholic for a couple of rounds . . . Kessel knows a bard has to keep his wits about him.

to expedite a bit

Kells enjoys the pleasant conversation with Auric and Tirra. When the two eventually leave, he looks at the others. "I hadn't really thought about adventuring, but it could be fun. What about it, does anyone know any likely spots to have a bit of challenge?"

He looks at the group to gauge thier reactions and receptivity to his question.

When there is a break in the conversation Khadath first properly introduces himself to both Auric and Tirra, then he brings up the topic of an adventure for their inexperienced group.

[b]”So Auric, you mentioned we need to find some sort of treasure within our reach if we wanted to try our hand at adventuring. Do you perhaps know of anyplace where we could get a taste of an adventurers life?"

"I respect and share Khellek’s interest in learning more of Faerun past as I too find the pursuit of knowledge both significant and invaluable."

"While Khellek hopes to discover ancient glyphs and artifacts of historical worth in the Stirgenest Cairn perhaps our group may assist in some small way, would there be any other cairns in these hills that we could poke around in? We would share any of our findings with Khellek, and as well it would give me the opportunity to meet with him.” he asks with a raised brow.

Khadath is already aware of the Whispering Cairn, he hopes to learn how forthcoming and helpful both Auric and Tirra can or will be

Sorry, i was apparently already writing my post (I'm a slow typer) so i didn't see this post, but will follow it if my post doesn't get anything from our two guest.

also for future notice, I prefer and will post my comments like this in the OOC discussion game thread so as not to clutter the game thread, so i hope other players check in there from time to time. :)

Darie nodded, herself unaware of any particularly juicy targets.

In fact, even thinking about the expedition left her with mixed feelings. Her parents would have called it plain and simple graverobbing - but was it so easy if the "occupant" was dead for longer than anyone could remember? If there was no descendant left to remember them by. It was just treasures gathering dust in some long-forgotten cave, right?

"Errmm... it is not desecrating the dead, is it? I mean, if they have been dead long enough to be nothing but dust, with none to remember them anymore?" she decided to voice this concern.

"Well, Ms Billown. I am not one of the high scholars to debate ethics and morality, perhaps at one point in a different life before I accepted Lathander this would have been an open path for me but no longer."

"Though I wouldn’t concern myself with it. but I wouldn’t support grave robbing. As you said, many people and places have long been forgotten. Civilizations fall, cities are conquered or destroyed, old ruins are forgotten. In many cases new structures are built over the old, leaving the task to bold adventures to venture forth to uncover and thread on ages past."

"Some place may still show signs of their predecessors but nothing significant to go on. Though there may be other places that have buried shrines dedicated to the gods before our time with more evidence about them to allow adventures to make a more rational judgment when dealing with them. Those perhaps shouldn’t be tampered with, unless the intent is to see the items returned to their order."

"Not to make you or anyone else for that matter unease, but there are evil site as well. Those should be avoided unless you believe you have the strength to destroy them or seal them away so that others may not stumble across them, or allow any servant of those bane site to make use of them."

Khadath then quickly finishes the remainder of his ale, a bit of a pale look is upon him apparently from the thought of his last statement for he knows the full extend of what it means.

“I believe I’m a bit parched now, can anyone else use another?” he indicates by raising his tankard.
