I like this round, having thought about it. There's a lot of tempting paths of doom in it. Paths of doom that lead to glory, as long as you don't step off said path. Or put the left foot where the right foot belongs. Or really even look away from the path for 5 words.

The truly tricky part is the 500 words. That is the challenge.

Well, 500 words that won't get you DQed, that was my primary challenge. I found this round a lot more limited then the previous ones and ended up shooting down my first couple ideas. Hopefully the third is good enough.
Last week (before the rules came out), on another messageboard located on the edge of imagination, I postulated the following villain-types would be represented:
-A new Demon Prince, evil downcast god, or similar type outsider.
-An evil wizard/sorcerer.
-A dragon.
-A vampire.
-A lich.
-A Warduke/Boba Fett sorta character - masked and mysterious.
-A Fallen Paladin.
-And a villain with most, if not all his/her class levels in NPC classes.
-Someone might also try to show off and create a new prestige class for their baddy.
I'm adding two more:
-The montage: A character with so many templates, and weird class levels it lacks all style and focuses squarely on the metagame. This villain grinds its opponents to death under the weight of sheer mechanics alone).
-The Monster: An awakened beast given titanic size, powers and or intellect. I'm looking at you Mr. Blink Dog.

I'm guessing someone might try the non-evil villain. Maybe even a good-aligned villain, like a fanatical LG priest of Pholtus whose mission is to stamp out heresy at any cost.

Ah... but then he'd be LN and not LG, as the LG person would look at the situation, and in the end, compassion would prevail.

I'm certainly hoping for a brilliant take on a classic like a dragon, lich, or vampire. I'm opened to be surprised by other things too, but my hope is for a new look at an old classic.

Hmm, too bad I didn't make it to round 3; my villain idea (had I made it through the first and second rounds) wasn't any of those... After we see and judge the round 3 villains, maybe I'll tell ya. :)

I tried to make the Ogre Mage make sense....didn't work. Silly eastern influence in my western fantasy.
That was my first instinct, as well - until my girlfriend said, "But Booms, didn't you already just do Ogre Mages?"
"No."
"There aren't any ogre mages in Cyrehllan?"
" . . . No?"
"I could swear that there are ogre mages in Cyrehllan."
" . . . maybe I'll do something else."

Well, if the classic is done with interesting twists, I will pay attention.
Adding a new prestige class would badly eat on word limit, so doing that is likely to end up being nice-crunch-no-flavor villain, so I hope we won't see that (or if we do, it will be a pleasant surprise).I wonder if anyone will go for hivemind.

It's not so much that your or anyone's villain made or didn't make "the list." Really it's more a question of does the villain have the right combination of tradition and new twist that the character is both playable and realistic. The "meta-mechanics" monster is the only villain on the list that I would deem a bad choice, but everything else if presented right is just fine in my never humble opinion.
I mean come on I made sorcerous, body-swapping yaks, and floating, erudite shocker lizards.

Mmm. Displacer Beasts. *So* much cooler than Blink Dogs.
Perhaps to the west of the Rolling Plains is a dark forest, said to contain a connection to the Plane of Shadow, by way of trying to explain the perpetual twilight that rules under its canopy. No one race could be said to 'rule' this benighted place, but the Displacer Beasts and their Pack Lords are the undisputed masters, terrorizing the local Bugbear tribes with their raids and extorting 'tribute' from the solitary Hags.
I'm looking forward to some kind of Swarm-based mastermind villain. Maybe a cleric of Erythnul (sp?) who takes the title "The Many" in a whole new direction.

In the Dragonmech setting you can outfit your mech with ooze launchers.
But really I think yaks would make better ammo.

I would be remiss if I didn't add that gnomes (both living and dead) make excellent catapult ammunition. Ahh, the sound of gnome striking castle walls...so satisfying...

Oi, I know - this whole "keep it to the SRD" rule has been really . . . interesting.
Like the whole thing with Gary Larson drawing 'Far Side' - he said that trying to keep all of his ideas & pictures inside that stupid, itty-bitty little box was the greatest drawing instructor he ever had.
Well just skimming through and it looks like many folks went "Montage" with a monster (the nightmare) and -elans, hmmmm. Elans? I think I've seen more people use abeils and yak folk in games than elans, which might be the real killer. I mean psionic is fringe but to pull a fringe race out of a fringe game setting is perhaps one fringe to many. At this point I believe one bad-ass human 8-12th level fighter with a distinctive helmet, reasonably sized horde, cool hook, and a bad attitude could whoop its way into the next round.
Elans: the red-headed, psionic stepchildren of D&D. ;)
