Gyorgy's blast just misses as the creature bounces erraticly in the air.

But now it is fully aware of the party and it turns towards them. A long tongue lolls from its mouth and its eyes glow a venomous green.

Jessa nearly panics at the haunting sight of the glowing green eyes. Forgetting her bow, she instinctively falls back on her magic to try and drive back the creature before it can close on them.

Jessa's ranged touch attack with ray of frost... (1d20+3 = 20 to hit, 1d3 = 3 damage)

Also...
Initiative check... (1d20+2 = 6)

The creature's wings freeze up and it momentarily stumbles through the air before its wings once more beat strongly.

I am in it until the end, but on weekends for the next several weeks my posting will be limited while I do a server rollover to 2008 for a client...

Initiative! (1d20+4=5)

I look around wondering what all the comotion is before realizing too late what is going on.

I'm startled by the blast of energy that emenates from gyorgy, and don't quite understand what's going on until jess fires off her frost. i hold harder my sword, and yell taunts to boost my spirits while i wait for the thing to get in range.

THE FLYING HEAD - Round 1
Eugen - Initiative 23
Flying Head -Initiative 21
Gyorgy - Initiative 12
Jessa - Initiative 6
Magazin - Initiative 5
Kenzo - ?

The creature moans and flaps its wings. The strange tentacles that dangle from its necks writhe unnaturally.

Eugen can act

Male Human Fighter 1

can i reach it to attack?

The thing is about fifteen feet off the floor. It is thus out of sword reach. However, if one wishes to attack with a sword, it is possible to ready an attack so that if it descends, it can be attacked. The down-side to this is that if it does not descend, the action is wasted.

Male Human Fighter 1

In that case, I prepare to attack the creature in case it descends during the course of this round.

The bizarre creature does not attack. Instead, as it hovers in the air, green eyes glowing, it opens its fanged mouth wide and lets out an unearthly shriek that reverbates inside the small room. The terrible noise seems eternal and unnatural.

Everyone needs to make a fortitude save (DC 12) or be paralyzed with fear. If you make the save, go ahead and act.

Fortitude save... (1d20+2 = 3)

"Aiiiieeee!" Jessa's scream of terror echoes that of the creature's shriek, but otherwise she finds herself numb and unable to act...staring in horror at the hellish green eyes.

Male Half-Elf (Shoanti) Cleric 2 (Favored:Cleric)

I stand transfixed in fear at the floating head.

Fort save vs. Fear. (1d20+4=7)

Male Human Fighter 1

Fortunately I am slightly hard of hearing and this time all i am conscious of is a slight unpleasant ringing left in my ears after the horrible shriek:
fort save (1d20 +5=21)

The creature ceases its shriek and prepares to dive towards the one who attacked it... Jessa.

Can Gyorgy act or will he too be frozen in fear? He still has a chance to shine. Eugen can roll to hit it as it passes by him towards the magic user.

C'mon Eugen! Don't fail me now!

Male Human Fighter 1

i swing! but clumsily...
attack (1d20 +6=10)

Jessa's life may now hinge on Gyorgy. No pressure though. :)

Female Human Wizard (Diviner) 2 / Cleric 1 of Sivhana

Somebody get Kenzo in here! Stat!

The head's leathery wings flap as the grinning monstrosity comes straight at Jessa's face.

Its long tongue lolls obscenely and Jessa can see its razor sharp teeth. But it doesn't bite her. It's tongue licks her face quickly and Jessa realizes the thing is about to try and kiss her. Something about that is enough to make Jessa move and she turnsher head just in time to prevent the 'kiss.'

Kissing Jessa (touch attack): (1d20+2=8)

Jessa can make an arcane knowledge check to see what she knows about the thing.

Male Human (Varisian) Bard 1 HP 10/10 | AC 15/11/14 | CMD 12 | saves F+2 R+2 W+3 | Vision: Perception +5, Sense Motive +1; Init +5 | Status: Normal

Holy Arcane Knowledge Batman! (1d20+7=19)

Gyorgy:

Spoiler:
Gyorgy has heard of creatures like these. They are called Vargoiles and hail from distant hells. Gyorgy has also heard that their kiss is deadly.

Knowledge (arcana) check... (1d20+8 = 24)

'Oh, Nethys!' Jessa thinks as she recognizes the horror at last, 'A vargouille! No! Get it away! Eugen! Stop it! Hurry!' She mentally urges the big warrior to rescue her, but groans inwardly as she sees him miss. Even in her fear, she can only wonder what kind of horrors the Thassilonians were in league with for such a creature to still prowl these ruined halls.

Does Kenzo get a chance to act? I notice he hasn't rolled initiative yet...

Jessa, incidentally, is no longer paralyzed and can act.

Edit: Eugen can probably act as well if he wants, not being paralyzed.

Well...that didn't last long...whew!

Finding strength and purpose once again, Jessa musters her will to fight back against the horror. She leans back from the monster and whispers the words to another hurried spell.

Casting defensively...
Spellcraft check vs. DC 15 for a 0-level spell... (1d20+8 = 18)

She unfurls her hand and another ray of icy light springs toward the vargouille.

Jessa's attack with ray of frost... (1d20+3 = 18 to hit, 1d3 = 2)

Male Human (Varisian) Bard 1 HP 10/10 | AC 15/11/14 | CMD 12 | saves F+2 R+2 W+3 | Vision: Perception +5, Sense Motive +1; Init +5 | Status: Normal

Another blast goes awry.

divine fire aainst Vargouille (touch attack) (1d20+4=6, 1d6+1=2)

Gyorgy is still paralyzed. Jessa 'unfroze' when she was attacked.

Jessa manages to strike the creature with another of her rays. This time the thing does fall to the ground as frost forms on its wings. It flops on the ground weakly, an easy target perhaps for Eugene...

"Aiiieee! Hit it! Kill it! Hurry!" Jessa scrambles away from the fallen beast, rubbing at her face from where its writhing tentacles touched her.

Male Human Fighter 1

I leap forward before it can break free of its icy binds and hack violently at it:

attacking (1d20 +6=17)

damage (1d8 +3=8)

Male Human Ki Mystic Monk 4

initiative (1d20=7+7=14)

Fort save (1d20=9+5=14)

I'll play it that Kenzo failed the save, to explain my delay in posting due to RL being a little nuts. I'll act after Eugen, if anything is left.

Kenzo is frozen in horror and unable to act.

Hrmmm... I couldn't see Eugen's post till after Kenzo posted. Sorry. I'm going to assume Kenzo acts and manages to finish it off.

Eugen hacks at it, nearly killing it. It twitches a time or two more and then Kenzo steps in, literally, and finishes it off.

The thing slowly begins to dissolve as an acrid vapor rolls off of it.

There is a door in this room across from the one the party came in. It leads to further sets of steps which eventually come to a dead end. The earth above has long filled the stairwell at this juncture and is packed into a solid wall.

Male Human Ki Mystic Monk 4

"Let's backtrack" Kenzo says in exasperation, "and see what else we can find."

Was there anything of note in the last room?

Kenzo wrote:

There was a pool of water, surrounded by stone skulls, splashed with dry blood.

You can examine it further if you want. I just was letting you know the other way was a dead end.

"I agree," Jessa nods, "This looks like a deadend. There's no way of digging through that."

As the group starts to file back the other way, she falls into step with Eugen and thanks him for helping put an end to the vargouille. "They're quite deadly," she explains, "You heard its scream, but its kiss is much worse from what the legends say."

"How's everyone doing?" she asks aloud, "I'm running low on arrows. And this place has proven a lot more dangerous than helpful so far. Maybe we should go back and prepare ourselves better?"

Back in the room with the red marble statue of the very angry woman holding the ivory ranseur.

There remains only the southern passage to explore.

"I say we take the south passage. With a little luck, this won't take much longer," says Kenzo. "Anyone else have any thoughts?"

"Works for me, although I'm looking forward to some fresh air after all of these strange tunnels."

The south passage is twenty five feet long and five feet wide. There are two hallways branching out from this passage, both going east. The First hallway to the east is located halfway down the passage. The second hallway to the east is located at the end of the passage.

Sovereign Court

I have just begun my teacher training in Oxford, unfortunately my home internet refuses to work - next Thursday (9 days from now) is the estimate, so until then my contribution will be patchy.

So which of the two eastern passages do you guys want to take off of the southern passage?

Male Human Ki Mystic Monk 4

Kenzo moves up the to first (middle) passage and peaks around the corner.

As Kenzo glances cautiously around the corner, he percieves only a long stone hallway disappearing into darkness.

Male Human Ki Mystic Monk 4

Kenzo motions to everyone else to stay put, crosses the opening and moves down the hallway to peak down the other passage.

Male Human Fighter 1

"the only good dungeon hallway is a dead, i mean an explored dungeon hallway, we might as well press on i imagine." i follow after Kenzo.

Male Human Fighter 1

after, i guess, he decides which passage he's settled on.

Kenzo wrote:

The second hallway, Kenzo can just make out, goes approximately thirty feet east before turning south.

"Which way, Kenzo?" Jessa whispers from their position at the opening to the other hallway.

please note that the original west in my most recent post should have read east and has been changed to reflect that. Sorry.

"We might as well take the first one," Kenzo says with a shrug as he walks back toward the group, leads them around the corner and down the hallway.
