Fighting Malfeshnekor

Rise of the Runelords

Is it necessary for the players to fight Malfeshnekor? Or can we skip over right over to the next chapter?
If the players do have to fight him how are they supposed to defeat him if they don't have magical weapons?

It's not necessary; he's been trapped in that room for thousands of years. He can wait a few more months for the PCs to gain levels to go get him later. In fact, several of the rooms in that part of Thistletop were built with the expectation that they'll be explored later by the PCs, possibly even after they've done Foxglove Manor or even finished off all of Skinsaw.

<edit: Mr. Jacobs beat me to it. He's good at time travel.>

I took to heart that the Search to find the entrance to that section was a DC 30. Playing Merisiel, and even taking a "20", her character did not have enough ranks until the whole party was powerful enough. Even with two levels later, I came close to a TPK. If the players came across him earlier, it would have been a TPK sans DM dice fudging.

Just like how there's another layer to the Catacombs of Wrath that isn't discovered until later, I think it's a good idea to look at the encounter level before springing it on the party.

Thanks for the info. My player group isn't big on that kind of combat encounters so it is good that we can skip it. Also setting Malfeshnekor on them might not be a good idea. Nualia almost killed them and she did in fact blind one of them(courtesy of the crit hit deck).
