Everyone who submitted, give yourselves a hand!
Nice work all around!
We got some really, really good submissions. And there are still tons I havent reviewed. This is going to be an awesome test. I asked you guys to make it hard on us and you responded. Our pick of top 32 is going to be real tough.
So for everyone who entered, you have my applause. Whether you make the cut or not. It is quite a project just to design and item and work it and evaluate it and edit it and then have the stones to submit it--put it out there for our review and criticism. I've written stuff, I know what it means to make something and put it out there for review and criticism. Its hard! Risking rejection and comment. But you guys did it!
That alone is the first step to RPG Superstardom. Maybe this wont be your break, but you wrote and you submitted. Einstein said genius is 10% inspiration and 90% perspiration. You guys did the perspiration part. Lots of people talk about it and never do it. You now are among the ones that "did" and I think that is awesome.
Everyone who submitted should be proud of themselves!
Best of luck! Now its our turn...
And you have my word that I will consider every single entry seriously and with the dedication and commitment that you guys deserve for all your hard work.

You really should thank Lisa. It was mostly her brainchild. And a great idea it is! I just got to be a judge. I sure didnt come up with it. Just more great stuff from the Paizo crew. They are amazing and this contest is just more proof.
Out of curiosity, if it was Lisa's idea, why isn't she judging?

Talion, if you knew me, you would know that I am an idea person. But in order to make an idea work, you have to get great people to work on it. From the start, I wanted top industry talent, who really know their 3.5 stuff, to be the judges for this contest. I still need to ask Jeremy Walker rules questions at every D&D game I run, because I have never been a rules lawyer. So I felt it would make sense to leave it in the hands of professionals. :)
I can say that Clark, Erik and Wolf have really done a bang up job of judging. It has been like sitting at the feet of the masters being able to peek in on their conversations in the RPG Superstar Judging Chambers. I learn something new from them every day that we have been judging and I hope they can pass along some of their wisdom in the upcoming competition.
My heartfelt thanks to our three judges for putting in long hours and doing such an amazing job!
-Lisa

Yes, much thanks to Lisa, the Paizo crew and the judges ... these sort of things really get the creative juices flowing!
You're absolutely right. If nothing else, I like the Wondrous Item I created, and I can't wait to get it into a game...but I never would have created it without the contest.

I thought this was such a great idea I told my players that they were expected to all submit items. We are a bunch of old farts (for gamers anyway) who have seen the industry change significantly in the past 30 years. To encourage these guys and gals to make submissions I told them all that I would find a way to work into our existing game their items, where possible, so I have seen nine of the items submitted and can tell you I wouldn't want to have to select the best one out of the bunch. I do not envy the judges the work they are facing nor the criticisms they are facing, because it will not be possible to please all of us.
So to the judges and staff of Paizo I want to extend a heartfelt thank you and appreciation for having the courage to do something like this and to put in the extra time and energy to give back to the community of players and masters who support this industry. You are appreciated.
May the best non-gender specific person win!

Thanks to Lisa, the Paizo crew, and the judges for putting this thing together. Good times and good competition in the name of having fun. I'll have a hard time waiting for 10 more days to find out who made the cut...
And Clark? Just a quick hair-splitting correction:
Einstein said genius is 10% inspiration and 90% perspiration.
You got the wrong brainy "E" guy. You were thinking of Thomas Alva Edison, the guy who holds 1093 patents for his inventions. And it's 1% and 99%. Just so's y'know.
Thanks again, all!

The coolest thing about this contest is that for the first time (never mind all the characters I've made or adventures I've run), I felt like a gaming creator, rather than a gaming consumer. It feels good...
but by no means do I want to imply that I'm going to stop spending money on gaming stuff.

I too would like to add my thanks and appreciation to everyone at Paizo for making this contest possible. Thanks to Lisa for being the Idea-lady, thanks to the Judges for judging us anonymously...and thanks to everyone taking part and for your submissions.
Oh, thatboomerkid? Love the PSA's, I've even referred some people from here over to watch...specifically for some pointers on "dwarven customs". You and Tordek are my definate favorites...well...we can't forget Mal either. ^_^

Totally anonymous. In fact, the entries are screened by Gary who scrubbs off any names in case someone sends in a submission with their name in the body of the submission text (which some have done).
So we have no clue who did what.
Now I wonder if anyone has had so personal voice that you can recognize the author from the anonymous entry...well, 200 words is probably not enough for that.
Well, anayway, good luck for the 32 winners (over 800 entries? Sheesh, everyone who makes the cut is pretty much already a winner).

That'll make it a mite difficult to give the award to the final 32 would it not?

Not if they've already decided who will win ;>

So, to get into the top 32, rolling 20 wasn't enough - you had to confirm that crit! (Admittedly you'd only need 6 or higher on your second roll.) In other words, the chance of each one of us making it through is less than 4%. I'm saying this as a form of comfort to those of us who don't make it...

If there are truly this many decent items... combine this with an Art Call and make the top 54 into Item Cards.
Something tells me you'd have a bare minimum 108 packs sold if both the artist and designer's name went on each of the 54 cards. I have no idea where the break-even would be, nor on how much time the judging requires. But I keep finding this idea interesting.
