Nethys is the god of magic, with an androgynous porcelain mask of bisected black and white for a holy symbol. His portfolio has interesting opposition in the destruction and protection domains and he's neutral.
He seems like a godly wizard to me, with a strong lunar motif, and possibly a cyclical feminine/masculine aspect. His herald would probably be the prototype of an arcane familiar, and their relationship a fabled example of the practice of summoning and keeping such creatures. It could be some sort of shapeshifter.
Barring that...a pterodactyl! Wee!

You regret the egret through the fenetre?
For shame Selk! Though the Pterodactyl might not be a bad idea....we all can see just how much James likes Dinosaurs...too the unobservant...
*Look at James' Avatar* ^_^
I think we are going to see a 'Lost World' portion of Golarion eventually.
I'm thinking of a wild plains area...a veldt. Jurassic Park ensues.

An idea came to me the other day regarding Nethys (because I too have considered crafting a PC cleric of that deity). Since he's the god of magic, and there are various schools of magic (i.e., abjuration, conjuration, evocation, etc.), why not give him a set of "muse-like" handmaidens or patrons representing each type of magic? And each of these former "apprentices" have devoted themselves as Nethys' heralds to Golarion.
I could then envision his clerics entreating the "herald of necromancy"..."handmaiden of enchantment"..."guardian of abjuration"...and so on as they say their prayers. Each of these heralds may represent demigods or powerful avatars/servants of Nethys in their own right. And via a divine magical mirror image-like effect, they manage to be in multiple places at once to manifest before Nethys' worshippers.
Any merit in an interpretation like that? I mean, it's not a pterodactyl, of course, but I kinda like it... ;-)
My two-cents,

Perhaps... the Runelords...?
Nah. Their psuedo-history's already detailed. It would've been humorous if the Runelords were Nethys' exiled apprentices, though.
Personally, I vote for a penguin.
