I've been slammed by work again today. I'm at least going to take a stab at the items though, in the 5 minutes I have here.

Let's assume the following:

1. The fire ability is transferred to Salome's scimitar. This gives it +1 fire damage on a normal hit and +1d6 fire damage on a crit.

2. The cold ability is transferred to Ehlissa's sword. The effect is similar to the fire.

3. The ranseur can be made into a mithril breastplate or heavy shield, your choice.

4. The goblet is identified with the following property: Once per day, you can put in 200 gp worth of magical reagents (e.g., ground gemstones) and it produces a potion that grants +4 to Int based skill checks and +2 to save DCs for abilities based on Int (e.g., Wizard spells); however, you take -4 to melee attacks and damage and Str and Con based skills. The effect lasts for 4 hours and leaves you exhausted.

5. The box functions basically as a bag of holding; however its appearance is disguised by illusion magic. It requires a key to open, which you eventually deduce is the shield emblem worn by the quassit. I will reveal the contents in game.

6. You create a wand of cure light wounds (50 charges 1d8+1 healing per charge).

7. After all that, you each have 500 gp to spend on additional equipment.

8. You also have the flamethrower, some books, and the shield amulet (once per day casts shield at CL 1 as an immediate interrupt).

I will try to get on the game thread tonight.

Thanks @JSL~!

good luck at work,

Laters,...

"Who are you?" asks Tigger, stuck up in the tree.

"Why, I'm the Narrator," answers the disembodied voice.

Thanks for helping us get un-stuck, JSL. :)

Mithral breastplate, it is...

JSL wrote:

I'm assuming we spent all of Zieke's craft points when he first joined the game. After attaining 4th level, he would have gained 8 new craft points. Presumably, he spent at least half of those on the mithral breastplate crafting. Given that he would have up to 4 craft points and 500gp left, is it possible for him to spend that on purchasing a new feat? Say, Two-Weapon Fighting or Dodge or something? If so, what would that cost (or how much would I then have left)?

--Neil

I'm going to try to make one last post before JSL takes us on another wild ride! ;)
THEN hopefully I'll have time to finalize and double check SLi's character sheet!

Neil- I know that 4 craft points will get you one feat, (one craft point per your current level) But I can't seem to find the post where JSL gave us the cost! It was VERY simple math, THAT I remember! (I want to say it was 50GP per lvl?!?)

Thx again JSL!

See you all soon!

@ JSL & Dreamer...

Hope everything's alright with you guys...and your new addition to the family. For what it's worth, I can now announce that my wife and I are expecting again as well. This will be our third and she's only about 5 weeks along. No idea if it's a boy or girl yet...obviously. Maybe I'll have more on that later.

--Neil

NSpicer- Congratz! My wife and I are at two and holding,... :P

JSL & Dreamer- What he said! ;) Hope everything is good.

NSpicer wrote:

Congratulations! I hope she has an easy time of it. Be nice to her. It's a lot of work to grow a person! :)

We're doing well with our almost-one-month-old. Right now, the biggest challenges are primarily logistical or cleaning-related. The baby is a delight, and her sibs are delighted. Usually.

I don't want to speak for JSL, but I do know he's very busy right now with a lot of projects and things that are taking energy from this project. I know I'll be disappointed if we don't make it to the "final battle," but I have no idea if/when that's going to actually happen. (To paraphrase, "Dude, where's my payoff?")

I'm also considering whether to continue RPGing on Paizo. When this game ends, will I continue? I'm not sure. I primarily joined this thread because I enjoyed following the story JSL was DMing and the opportunity came up for me to get an "insider's view" of one of my husband's interests and do something fun with him. With the end of JSL's involvement in Paizo, and knowing I could never recreate the terrific experience I've had with this group, there isn't a lot keeping me here beyond this. I would certainly consider a direct invitation from any of you guys to join a group, but I doubt I'm going to be trolling around for another group to join once this one ends. [/ramble]

Oh...you will most certainly receive invitations (both you and JSL). ;)

The hardest part about really good RPGing is finding a like-minded group with similar playstyles and expectations. You guys are story-centric. So am I. And I think the primary goal of RPGs is to recreate the terrific experiences you have from one game to another...or one story to another. To do that, it's imperative to keep gaming with the same people if at all possible.

The thing I like the most about PbP games is that the rules really don't matter nearly as much as the storytelling and in-character interaction. So, 4e...3.5...or Pathfinder...doesn't matter that much. To me, anyway...

Just my two-cents,
--Neil

NSpicer wrote:

And having a good grasp of spelling, writing conventions, and literary structure doesn't hurt, either. :)

That probably makes me sound pretentious, but language and how it is used are very important to me. And bad spelling, grammar, etc. can be very distracting and confusing to me. (Hmm. Another reason why I might not enthusiastically jump into a stranger's game.) One thing that has made this group enjoyable has been the storytelling and the mutual striving for excellence in writing that story.

Dreamer wrote:

For me, I've always held to the philosophy that an RPG is an elevated form of storytelling. It's collaborative in the sense that there's no single author. Not even the GM qualifies as such, though he obviously has the greater pen to wield in what gets written, so to speak. Even so, every player controls the story and reactions of their own PC. But it doesn't stop there, because collectively, those PCs in conjunction with the GM's NPCs drive out a whole that's greater than the sum of its parts.

So again, it's very rare...but precious...when you can find a group of RPG'ers who understand and champion that level of immersion in weaving a great story together. It's what makes RPGs an important part of my life. Because I can't simply obtain that experience reading a book, watching a movie, or even writing a story on my own. There's something bigger and better about it when you control only part of the story (either as player or GM) and volley things back and forth with everyone else. In a lot of ways, it hearkens back to the most imaginative and exhilirating pretend games we enjoyed as children. But now, such storytelling and imagination can be done on a more mature (or refined) level. And it's equally or more entertaining as a result.

But that's just my two-cents,
--Neil

Entertaining, and fun! :D

I've always enjoyed RP games ever since I discovered that I could act out my favorite books, movies, and even comic books in them!

I'm basically a frustrated actor, looking for an outlet. I just got VERY lucky in finding this as my first group for PbP! I don't consider my self a slouch in the writing department, (Though I'll admit, I use a paragraph where one simple adjective might be better!) BUt the level of writing in this group from day one has always been superb, cajoling, no,... driving me to try to better myself and write better each time. (I'll just you decide if it worked! ;P)

I hope that this group can continue together in SOME form, if only stopping into a chat room somewhere and saying 'HI' occasionally.
As far as continuing,...
I understand that JSL, and probably Dreamer, will not be returning to these threads after we are done. I mainly use Paizo for entertainment, information on upcoming things, and for PbP. INother words I sort do drive by's on threads, I don't really stay and get involved. SO I seem to have missed entirely what is turning off several people in other threads. So I currently have no plans for leaving.

HOWever, I am not married to it, and it is not the only site I visit.

SO,... IF JSL and all wanted to get together on another thread,... (Hint, Hint) ;)

Seriously, As Neil pointed out, with a group like this, we make it all about the story, whether having fun with our characters, or battling evil, or interacting with NPC's, so it doesn't really matter what system we're using. And after all is said and done here, if you all wish to continue together on another site, either continuing from here, or starting afresh, please don't think that I would hesitate for a minute to join you!

IN the meantime, whenever JSL is ready, I, (and everyone's fave Manic Mage) will be here, looking forward to the FINAL (?!?) BATTLE!!! :)

I have no particular emotional connection with Paizo myself. I've bookmarked these two threads and go directly to them (though I won't divulge how frequently I check) and bypass the rest. However, it does sound like there are many people who feel passionately about their sites, systems, and styles. I think the problem is when people decide that their viewpoint is the only one allowed.

When discussing self-care and priorities with clients, I've found a simple litmus to help people know when to say "no" to activities and requests. The question is, "Does this energize me, or does it use up what energy I have?" (Is it an energizer or an ennervator?) Finally! A use for a 7th grade vocabulary word!

I think that's what this is coming down to for JSL. This takes a lot of energy for a DM (in addition to real-life unavoidable energy-suckers), and there are other things to fill precious down-time with. So I don't know what his timetable is, and I certainly don't want to speak for him. I, for one, would like to continue this "fellowship" to its end, and continue, as Rags noted, some kind of contact or connection with the RotRL group, even after the story is done. (And however it ends, I still think some kind of epilogue/bookend/debriefing would be in order.)

Ragadolf wrote:

Well, I am married to JSL, and prefer to be wherever he is. :)

Ragadolf wrote:

I wouldn't rule it out. How's that for a Magic 8 Ball answer?

Spoiler:
I saw a Magic Therapist Ball once (same idea); it said things like "How does that make you feel?" It was pretty funny. They could make a Dr. Phil version that says "How's that workin' for ya'?" I'm still holding out for Freudian Slippers for Christmas.

In short, I'm not ready to give up on this thread, and I'll keep checking up on things here. Even if it's just for tangents like these.

One possibility people might like to investigate are indie rpgs or story games in which the player/GM dynamic and narrative are more fluid.

FabesMinis wrote:

How does that work? Would it apply to something like this PbP?

Hm, Sounds kinda like what we're doing already!

Sorry for not posting anything in the last 10 days. RL has become an unmitigated disaster at work. I have had to take over for the guy they forced out as well as the guy who transferred up to SF. And the person who was assigned to work on one of my other projects basically hasn't. Meanwhile, I have one major project under construction while the architect continues to design it. We have already lost a ton of money on it and I am stressed out by the fact that this mutton-head's incompetence is now directly affecting my performance bonus, which is money we are relying on to move to Oregon next year. Additionally, I have had a few other jobs pan out in less than ideal fashion over the course of the year, so I'd be struggling to maintain my usual performance record even without this loser on my record. If there is any good news, it is that the contractor, fabricators, and others on this job agree that the architect is incompetent, too. But the funny thing is, his firm thinks so highly of them, they promoted him to principal and let him open a new office in SF (they are based in NY). And the donors paying for the project (it is a new office bldg at Stanford) like him so much, they took him on a 6-week trip to Russia in the middle of the project (i.e., when he was supposed to be designing the building).

I have therefore coined the phrase "New York Architecture" to refer to any attempt at architecture so bumbling and error-prone that the building cannot be built as drawn. It is a good thing that the contractor is skilled enough to build it inspite of the architect's shortcomings. But it has meant alot of extra work for me or time that should have been spent on other projects (or this game) wasted on revisions and urgent redesigns to accomodate yet another architectural error.

As a Stanford alumni, I have half a mind to file a complaint with the University over misspent funds. But most of it is being paid for by a richie-rich donor, so I don't really mind wasting their money as much. I just wish I weren't wasting it in the evenings and weekends redesigning the same stair case for the 4th time (because NY Architecture does not, apparently, require conformance with the CA fire code!?!).

That said, I cannot commit to any schedule for resuming the game until at least the end of the year. Hopefully by January most of the structural work (i.e., steel and concrete) will be in place and it will literally be too late to make changes. Usually at that point in a job, our role diminishes significantly and I will be able to duck or redirect most of the questions that do come my way.
So, how best to manage restarting the game? Should I send an email? (I'd need your addresses) Should I just post here? Should we start a new thread?

P.S. Hang in there, man.

Oh, wow.
When I first moved to New Orleans, I coined the phrase, "I love people that make me look smart!" Because it was appropriate.

But you just took it to Dr Who levels/worlds past anything I have ever seen!

Hang in there man, at least you know there's an end of the tunnel coming up!

JSL wrote:

Any way you want to do it is fine with me!

My email, (ONE of them anyway!) Is: Ragadolf <at> Veeshan <dot> com

But honestly, I'd probably be more likely to spot a line dropped here or on a new thread than actually check my email lately! I don't see a reason to start a new thread, unless you really want to, it seems right to finish this here to me. But I'm with any way you want to play it! :)

All I have to say is God bless you both, have a great Holiday season, and I'll see you after the new year! I'll be hanging out on a couple of other threads, including Fabe's newest one, and probably checking this one fairly regularly.

EDIT- I was just logging in and started typing the following when I actually looked and saw JSL's post. As long as we're all sending well-wishes and prayers your way guys, if you have time for an extra, I'd appreciate it too.

When I read my own words, they seem so lame. But I have been chewing about whether or not to say anything all week, and then I finally decided to vent, because you all are just usually pretty cool, not to mention so darned supportive,... Well, I just hope I don't sound like TOO much of a dork for wishing you well, and asking for the same! ;)

Long story in short, My wife took a teaching job for Pre-K 3 (3 Year olds) this fall, and we bought a new house. The job turned out to be a total disaster. The assistants don't want to BE assistants, they want to be in charge (They won't even allow the teachers to refer to them as assistants!) and they resent the teachers, and have been non-cooperative at best, and trying to cause them problems at worst. And her supervisor (EDITED by Myself for non-appropriate and non-important to the tale comments), thinks these people are the best in the entire school system. (Heaven help the REST of the system then!) So, Monday she basically tells my wife, 'Your a really nice person, you need to quit today, or in two weeks I'm going to fire you'. (Obviously she didn't USE those exact words, she was Covering her @$$ with paperwork and malarky, but that's what it boiled down too.)

So, as of Tuesday morning, my wife is unemployed, which means we just lost 2/3 of our take home pay. (The college pays me $#@!) FOrtunately, I was so paranoid about buying the house that I have been saving all the extras I normally would have used to pay off the credit card bill and all, so it's not the total disaster it COULD be. AND my wife has already filed with 4 parishes (That's 'counties' to you non-Louisiana people) to start Substitute teaching, and applying for any thing that opens up. So we'll be alright. JUST a LEETLE nerve-racking.
Just a bit,... yeah. ;P

So, a break is fine with me. I have said all along I'll finish this with you anytime, anywhere (or any site) JSL. Just let us know when!

As above, I'll be checking periodically to see if there have been any new tangents started, (Or to try and start one myself, I'm not beyond that!) ;) Until then,... Best of wishes and prayers be with you all, and Happy Holidays!

Later,...

Hey all, if your still checking in occasionally (Don't ask how often I check this thread!)

Then Welcome to Thanksgiving Week!

As stressed as I have been lately, I try not to forget all the things I have to be thankful for!

Wife, kids, friends, all those things that make the stress of the job worth it!

God bless you all, and have a wonderful Thanksgiving!

See you laters,...

I kinda miss this.

Wishing all a joyous holiday season and a prosperous and happy new year.

Peace.

Happy New Year!

Male Human - dash of elf Miniature painter/ Heroic

I was thinking about the game the other day, about the truly knife edge combats and the passionate self-doubt nearly every character except dear old Mal indulged in.

I especially remember the fight against the mutant goblin and the zombies in which Vesh was knocked out and Ehlissa carried him out, as we retreated through the portal.

Good times!

Ah yes,...
Paranoia, doubt, fear,... and a healthy dose of 'Holy Spit! What was that?!?'

I miss the good old days!

Also, I know santinj is aware, but for the rest of you, just in case you didn't notice, I made it into the RPG Superstar competition here at Paizo. I could certainly use your votes if you like my work from round to round.

Best wishes,

Even I can't say for sure, and I don't want to speak for the DM. Latest developments: JSL's still busy with work; I finished my hours and am getting ready to take my licensing exams (yes, that's plural); and we're moving to Oregon in about 6 weeks. We just have to find a house first.

If anyone is aware of a game store/gaming group/RPGA tourney/etc. in the Eugene area, I know someone who's looking for one. ;)

My hope is that after the move and life has quieted down in the Pacific Northwest (as opposed to the over-scheduled busy Bay Area), we'll be able to either finish the game or at least get some kind of closure. I might even peek around Paizo a little more after that, too. You know, with all my free time (what's that?)!

P.S. Congrats, Neil! (Vote early and vote often?)

By the way, I don't recall if I mentioned it prior to the game closing down, but my wife and I are expecting our third child. The doctors tell us it will be another girl. I'm surrounding by women-folk!

I'm still alive. Here's what our last 6 weeks have been like.

I walked into work at 7:30 on Monday, Jan 5 refreshed from a 2 week break that turned out to be more relaxing than I expected and my boss pulled me into the conference room, closed the door and said, "Do you still want to move to Oregon? One of the three engineers in the office there just turned in his notice and they have a ton of work lined up and need help ASAP. How soon can you get up there?"

We had been planning to move, but in July or early August. This change cut three months off my wife's exam prep time, and has caused us to cram what we expected to be a 6 month process of house hunting, packing, and moving a family of six into 13 weeks. On top of it, while a couple of construction market sectors have totally shut down causing our SF office to lay off two junior engineers, my work load has continued to be huge. I have four projects under construction, two in the permitting process, and one under design. I will soon probably have at least one other project under design as well.

If there is good news in this, its that they probably can't lay me off anytime soon and the loss of the other guy in Oregon means that my uncertainty about the amount of work in that office is somewhat allayed by the knowledge that I will have at least as much work to do as the other fellow would have if he stayed on. In other words, the office will not have to generate more work than it otherwise would have to accomodate me.

Also good is that having to do this quicker will mean it should be done sooner. And I hope that once it is done I will be in a place mentally where we can continue the game.

I have been playing RPGA Living Forgotten Realms (4e) adventures at the local game store and that has also been an avenue for getting back into a good place with this. It is fun to be on the other side of the DM screen and to see the decisions I make in character development pay dividends in the adventure. While the LFR style is far from perfect, it has been a good outlet and a chance to work through some of the DM burnout I was starting to feel in October.

I sincerely hope that moving to Eugene will be the reset button that I need to get our campaign back on track. In the meantime, I will try to be around here more for the next 6 weeks or until we have the internet disconnected. I will keep you posted. And I'll try to check out the Superstar stuff and vote for NSpicer.

One last thing: Santinj@ if you are lurking, I'll be in Eugene all of next week (2/16-2/21) and would love to get together if you are willing to hang out with people you met online. Please email me: legruej at yahoo dot com.

All of that sounds good, if a bit hectic. And I know you guys have the motivation and enough organization skills to make all of that work out to your favor.

Like everyone else here, I stand ready to renew the game at whatever pace you set. Fabes, Rags, and I are still active in the PbP's here on Paizo's boards. And Santinj has been around. Depending on what his schedule looks like, it might be interesting if could bring in a new PC or find a way for Vesh to return at some future point.

In the meantime, we've all got a lot of side stuff going on. So, let's get that cleared out of the way and keep in touch. Also, thank you very much for your support. It is most appreciated...

Wow,...
I skip checking the thread for a few lousy days! Sheesh! ;P

Great to hear from everyone!

JSL & Dreamer, SOrry to hear about having to rush, cram & pack, but congrats on the good parts! Hows that newest lil' future D&D'er doing? By all means, IF & when you manage to survive all the hectic-ness, and moving,... (DID I mention that I HATE moving?!?) I can promise that I'll still be around when you get back!

I think that if I were to forswear and quit D&D tomorrow, I would make an exception to come back and finish your game. It is just that much fun!

Neil! I had no idea you were in the design contest! Cool & gratz! Now I have a reason to check it out! I'll poke around in there and drop you a vote! Another girl? Dude, your seriously outnumbered there,... ;) (Gratz!)

IF anyone sees Sant on the boards (or anywhere) Be sure to tell him that Rags said 'Hi'.

As for us? Kids are still being kids, WIfe's still looking for a job, I'm still UNpacking trying to get all of our stuff out of the garage & into the house we bought back when she DID have as job, (I see myself being like 'Bob' from The Incredibles [No, not just cause I'm overweight!] One day my wife will call and say,... "We are now officially moved in!" And I'll respond, "Yeah honey, and the last 3 years don't count because?" And she'll say, "Because I finally unpacked the last box, we are now OFFICIALLY moved in!")

Train of thought completely derailed,... (You should see me in real life!) MAN I miss you guys! ;)

Anyhoo, staying busy at work. STill over worked and underpaid. And since the state of Louisiana just took a 4.? million dollar budget cut hit, that ain't likely to change soon! (FYI, the ONLY things that receive LA state money that are NOT protected by state law and can have their budget cut, Hospitals, and higher education. SO guess where the entire 4.? million budget slash came from???)

Everyone stay healthy, stay happy! ANd God willing, we'll all be able to gather together around the ol' PbP campfire for one last rousing tale!
:)
Laters,...

LOL! That's probably just a protection racket run by the local Thieves' Guild. ;-D

And thanks, again. You guys be sure to vote for me, if you can!

I chuckled when JSL told me this . . . it was fun to meet and hang out with him last week. Good luck with the next steps, move, etc.

Neil, good luck with the next round. "Wall of stats," psssh.

All the rest, I've got this thread in my RSS reader, so, yes, I still read your updates now and again. Hope life is going well for all of you.

After how long of doing this, you'd think I'd learn NOT to read these posts with a mouthful of cola! ;)

Great news JSL & Dreamer, keep us up to date!

Cool! I've never been to a Mardi Gras...or New Orleans for that matter.

The voting for Round 4 of the contest is underway. It ends on Monday at 2PM PST. Once you're caught up on your reading...and if you like my entry...please consider casting a vote for me. The competition is quite fierce at this point. I'm barely above the cut-off line right now for the 4th and final spot in the Top 4.

Thanks,
--Neil

Took me a while (and I confess I didn't read ALL of the entries from all of the rounds) But I did read this rounds entries. And you got one of my votes. And because you earned it. Good work, and Good luck.

Thanks, Santinj! You guys certainly helped make it happen. The voting had to have been super-tight this round...and the same will probably be true for the finals, as well.

Congratz Neil!
I saw the announcement this morning. Good work!

I am both impressed and envious of your talent! (Maybe more envious of your hard work ;P)

Keep it up and good luck in the last round! :D
