Kyrgyzstan is where he was stationed. He sent me some pictures of the mountains surrounding his base. They were an amazing sight. He had the chance to hike them on several occaisions and said it was wonderful.
Cool! Glad he's been able to enjoy the countryside in his down time!
By the way, Utak... is there any way you could e-mail an updated map of the battlefield? I must confess that I haven't been taking notes... sorry, and thanks for your consideration!

Sure, I plan on posting and getting the game back on track tomorrow afternoon. Once the map is updated from this future post, I'll e-mail you a copy.
Have a safe and Happy New Year everybody.
Cheers

I have sent the e-mail with the updated map. The map is in an MS-Works Spreadsheet. My guess is that Excel would also open the document.
Let me know if there are any questions.
Hope everyone had a great New Year. Glad you all stuck around while I got caught up. I should be back to posting daily now.

Hey Everyone,
I have been giving a lot of thought about the future adventures of this fighting force. Getting a bunch of PbP experience under my belt, both DMing and playing, I am starting to get a feel for what works and what doesn't. At least I hope so.
I have plans for adventures containing investigation, riddles/puzzles, a potential murder mystery, and, of course, combat.
I am also considering a total social encounter that would most likely require heavy roleplaying with little to no combat. Would anybody not want to play this? The reason I ask is because I am envisioning a prolonged encounter in 'real time', and I do not want anyone to be bored or left out.
Also, I love story. And good characters that shine are very important to story. Now that you are all getting a feel for your characters, would you mind listing a few things that you perceive are the true strengths of your characters. My plan is to throw as many 'shining moments' that I can think of for each character into the encounters.
Also, if you wanted to add your adventure preferences, I'm listening.
Thank you for your time and assistance with this.
Cheers

My preference is for the roleplaying, Lady Janas is a roleplayer and cannot fight much.
That said I get plenty of opportunity to beat things up in the other games, where I play a mercenary and a barbarian.
Plus Pbp seems to lend itself to the mystery, puzzles and roleplay.
I do think you should host a party for us when we complete one day of this campaign. I'm reckoning on being about tenth level by then.

Party at Utak's.
French Wolf, if you ever make it to the States, there is always an open invite.
Many times driving into work I daydream about hitting the lottery, buying a castle or mansion, inviting everyone over (airfare on me) for a weekend marathon session, and hiring the staff over at Paizo to DM. What a great dream.
Now if I just played the lottery ...

Hey Everyone,
My posting might be a little strained next week, literally. My glasses just broke. I have them taped, and they are mostly functional, but they look ridiculous and are uncomfortable. I have an eye doctor appointment on Monday after work so I may not be around that day, and it will probably be about a week until I get new frames. My glasses sit just a bit off, and I can already feel the strain on my eyes from the computer screen.
I will still be around to post but probably not as much.
Sorry for any inconvenience.
Cheers

Hi everyone,
At the beginning of the month I put out a question regarding future adventures in this game. I only received a few responses which makes me wonder if you, as players, are enjoying the game. I put this question out there to serve two purposes. One was to see what kind of games you all like. The second purpose was to see how many responses I would get.
The question served its purpose, so I must ask, Are you having fun?
I am looking for an honest assessment and response of your enjoyment of the game. (meaning don't be afraid to hurt my feelings, trust me, I can take it)
The reason I ask is that I spend a lot of my at-home free time on this game, and I am feeling a bit stretched at times, and to an extent, I am getting grief from my wife for spending too much time on the computer.
Now, I really enjoy this whole PbP phenomenon, more as a player than as a DM. That is not to say that I also do not enjoy DMing Erian’s Glen, but I am starting to wonder if I am providing a fun and interesting game for you.
If you don’t want to criticize the game on this forum, please feel free to e-mail me your thoughts.
Thanks in advance for your honest responses.

am good with it; looking forward to the story going forward; is a bit slow, but that is ok too; I check in all the time to see if it is my initiative turn :)
I am working on non-combat, more investigative scenarios that should allow for more free-form role-playing that will hopefully speed up play.
My mistake, I recognize now, is throwing a big battle with many enemies and NPC's at such a large party. Live and learn.
Glad you're still interested in the story.
Thanks for chiming in.

I to am watching how things work out as big battles are and should be a part of the game once in a while, am watching to see how it works and how I might handle it to make the mechanics run more smoothly, but have no suggestions at this time though have given some thought to the idea that for big battles just use party init so everyone goes at the same time, but not sure if that would help or not.

Remember we are blessed. And have healing rings and a free reroll.
DM Questions
Aren't the Ogres large and occupying four squares? with reach? Or are these tall, thin, one square ogres with no reach?. When the cleric of the Invincible moved, a runner moved, was that meant to be the loader?
The Lady is wise. The Healing Rings each have three charges and can be activated using a free action. Each use is treated as a level 1 CLW spell. Also, as stated earlier, as a Christmas present, everyone is entitled to a reroll of a d20 of their choosing.
Thanks French Wolf for pointing this out. The spreadsheet is a nice utility, but it allowed me to easily overlook my obvious D’oh.
The ogres are standard ogres and should take up four squares.
The ogre by the cleric is now in squares O29:P30. The runner by the cleric is the heavy crossbow loader.
The ogre by Memnon is now in squares S27:T28
This moves Memnon to T26
The bugbear with the halberd moves to U26.
I sincerely apologize for this oversight. Put it down as lack of experience. I promise to reward you all well to make up for my errors.
As I mentioned at the start of this game, I concentrate more on story and many times I forget or am just unaware of the rules. Please point out my errors. This is the best way I learn. Thanks again for bringing this up.
Cheers

My opinion is...
Delaying means you just jump back into the combat later in the round. Your initiative goes to whenever you jump back in. You can only delay to the end of the round and not onto the next round.
Readying is when you state that you will act when something specific happens. You have to tell the DM what that is. Then you interrupt the action when it happens and you get an initiative just before the one when the action happens. Say like 9+ for instance.
Lady Janas should have had a new initiative when she readied to cast the illusionary wall but I didn't want to nitpick. Next time I'll mention it Utak.

Hi everyone,
At the beginning of the month I put out a question regarding future adventures in this game. I only received a few responses which makes me ...
.... advance for your honest responses.
Utak
I have given this a bit of thought and here is my honest opinion.
DM great, game great, players great.
In more detail
Pbp is inherently much slower than tabletop, but a twenty + figure combat will erode people's energy making things even slower.
Christmas, New Years and Thanksgiving (for those of us not British or Canadian) has a similar effect.
Deaths (and illnesses) in families really slows things down.
The best part of this game has been the initial roleplay, in and around Erian's Glen.
I don't mind the combat and this battle is a combat and a half, but its the intrigue and interplay that counts - for me.
Secondly I get the same grief from my wife about being on the computer and I do the following, cook her special meals, allocate her equal time if not more, and try to limit the amount of time I "browse" on the forums.
Cheers

French Wolf,
Thank you for your honesty, thoughts, and suggestions.
The next thing I have planned, if you take the hook of course, should turn out to be very investigative. I expect it to include interaction with various NPC's, a mystery or two to solve, and eventually ending with some combat. (but on a much smaller scale)
While creating Erian's Glen, back when I was a newbie to PbP, I envisioned this battle. I still wanted to try it out, but I have learned alot for future installments.
Thanks again,
Utak

After some thought and a discussion with my wife, I will be looking to bring this game to a close. I must admit, as I previously mentioned, the last month or so I have felt really stretched thin between work and too many games. I always want to put a good effort into every post, but I think that I have worn myself down. Even worse, my wife was pretty upset at me, and I came to realize that I am not giving her the attention that she deserves. We had a conversation last night and came to a compromise.
What I would like to do is finish this encounter and give the game closure. My hope is that all of you would be interested in that, but I understand if this is not the case.
My sincere apologies for doing this not just once, but twice. I truly hope that there are no hard feelings.
Hope to see you in the gaming thread for a few more rounds.
Cheers

Sad to see the game ending, but your reasons are fair enough. I'm a mere player in 3 PbPs, and even that can be a significant time drain, when added on to work, relationships, etc... can't imagine the commitment that DMing one of these requires...
Thanks for a great game, though, Utak... you had a really interesting setting and characters. The current battle is ambitious and would be awesome in a tabletop game, but as French Wolf pointed out, it's a bit of a grind for a PbP... live and learn!

Utak,
I for one have enjoyed the game, but life is yanking the rug out from under me as well. I was bordering on dropping out myself, but Dardin is just too much fun.
Anyway, I for one have no hard feelings.
In fact, if you are still using this setting for your own RL gaming, I would be happy to help you continue developing the halfings, and their traditions.

Well it is sad to let this game go yet again but I too have found myself streached way to thin as well and find it hard some weeks to be able to RP at all. From a wifes point of view it is nice to see that you are taking her thoughts in mind. We tend to have the same problem at our house with Dreamweaver and Guildwars. I just have to remind him that the kids come before gaming when they are awake. Please keep me in mind if you decide to start up another game as I would love to play under your quick witted guidance.

Gee guys, thanks **blush**, shucks
Honestly though, thanks for your understanding. I felt pretty guilty doing this again.
French Wolf, if it would ever feel right, I would definitely restart.
I actually had a bunch of ideas tucked away to keep this game going for awhile. I would love to see some of them come to fruition. In the beginning of the game, I subtly mentioned many problems. These would have eventually escalated, turning into (hopefully) fun adventures. And after this latest battle, I have learned so much about PbP games.
Back when I first started the game, I even had ideas of starting a second game as a city adventure in and around Aiden’s Wall.
I wish there was more time in each day or a billion dollars in my bank account.
Well thanks again for your understanding, and see you all around in the other games.
Cheers
I would love to play under your quick witted guidance.
It is so hard to tell if this reads sarcasm. :)

Hey Everybody,
If you are interested, I just made the last post in the 'Game' thread to give Erian’s Glen some closure. I have decided instead of NPCing half of the characters and allowing this game to bleed out over the next month or so, I would just end it quickly.
I want to thank all of you for your great play. I truly had a great time with all of you. I will always cherish this game, the characters, and especially you, the friends I have made while playing.
I truly would have liked to continue, but RL did intervene, and I needed to make a choice. I hope you all understand and there are no hard feelings. I know you put a lot of hard work into the game and your characters, and I appreciate that.
Thanks again, I enjoyed the ride while it lasted.
Cheers
