I've been a player in and GM'd many online games, and the speed difference is large between text chat and Skype, though this group is among the faster text groups I've seen (I haven't seen an encounter though). Honestly, using MapTool and Skype allows the game to move at or near tabletop speed with tabletop interaction, so I don't even miss tabletop anymore.
That said, I would want to do what the rest of the group is comfortable with. In my experience, the only thing required to make a great DND campaign is great people.

Just wanted to test the waters again for adding voice chat. I know a few of you are skeptical. What are the cons?
I am in agreement with using voice chat as well. It just seems we would get more done. I do realize it will change the flavor of the game but in the interest of getting more out of our weekly sessions I think it is a good trade off.

So after last night's session, what are everyone's thoughts on switching over to Ventrilo? I thought it worked out well; should speed the game up some and make my job some what easier as DM. I plan on getting a mic ASAP. Lens, great idea with the icon for initiative. I have a lot to learn about MapTool.

I thought it worked out well. I enjoyed roleplaying Urgur and listening to everyone else roleplay their character's too.
I'm looking forward to doing it again next week and hopefully soon we'll all be using voice.

Wow. Long time, no post. (Some of this stuff happened quite a while ago, so the details are a little foggy) The group managed to defeat the Mistress of the Lotus Dragons and plundered her abode. Locating information on the Dragons nefarious plans and some letters from Vanthus to Rowyn (apparently the two were lovers, the group decided it best to report back to Lavinia. Urgur went back to the streets of Sasserine and rented a cart which the group loaded with stuff from the hideout (including the bodies of Nyll, Dalamiir and Rowyn) and proceeded to the Vanderboren Manor.
After securing an audience with the Lady, the group explained what happened and presented the information and letters they had taken from the hideout. Lavinia was obviously upset with the letter's content (which contained information that Vanthus had murdered their parents)and insisted that Vanthus be brought to bear, whatever the cost, before he could wreak more havoc. The group also requested Lavinia go to the Watch with the other information, due to the uncertain nature of their actions in the Lotus Dragons Guildhall. Lavinia agreed to so, since some of the information was of a sensitive nature.
The group received some more coin from Lavinia and was asked to meet back at her residence in a few days time, when she would introduce to them another interested party (Dyn). Lavinia also agreed to provide a proper burial for both Nyll and Dalamiir, at her expense (The group didn't tell her about Rowyn's body). After this, the group went back to the Thrice Born Phoenix for rest and recovery.
The next few days were spent doing just that, as well as purchases and the like. Urgur attempted to contact the Kellani family about their daughter, Rowyn but was not allowed onto the estate grounds. Even after much fuss, Urgur could not convince anyone to speak with him about it. Urgur ended up buying a plot for Rowyn at the House of Kord graveyard in the Champion and burying her himself. Deciding(in a few days time) he might have made a mistake, he returned later to find that the body had been exhumed with no one the wiser.
The group met back at Lavinia's, met Dyn, and were informed by Lavinia of the good news that the Dawn Council wanted to hold a special banquet in the PCs honor for their service to the city. A small, but gallant affair was held at Castle Teraknian with representatives from most of the nobles in attendance. The PCs were each awarded a Spire of Sasserine medal in honor of their service to the city. END of the first adventure!
Hope to post more later today. The group consists of:
~ Tiir, Human Beguiler 3
~ Urgur, Half-Orc Barbarian 1/Cleric 2
~ Moors, Hadozee Fighter 2/Scout 1
~ Dyn, Elf Evoker 3
~ Kavin, Sorceror 2/Rogue 1
~ Amrhil, Druid 3

After some discussion, the group decided to try and find out the whereabouts of Vanthus, beginning at the place he mentioned in the letters, Kraken's Cove. Dyn was able to secure a map of the area from the Cartographer's Guild and after a fair bit of searching, the group was able to secure passage on a small sailing ship for a price. Most folks the adventurers talked to advised the group that Kraken's Cove is likely a dangerous place, thriving with all manner of pirates and other "scum". The group set sail and after a short time at sea, the ship moored on land a good ways from the cove. The Captain of the sailing ship would not get too close, for fear of the dangerous reefs and the Cove's unruly inhabitants. The PCs paid the Captain to wait for them and set out towards the Cove on foot.
After walking for an hour or so, the PCs saw black columns of smoke in the distance, in the direction of the cove. Worse yet, the area they were traversing seemed like something out of a nightmare. Blood, bits of bone, shredded animal carcasses and other gore seemed to be the norm here, with everything from birds to snakes seeming to have been in some sort of unnatural feeding frenzy. Finding this strange, the group soldiered on and was attacked by a small pack of unnatural looking monkeys who hungered for the PCs flesh. Urgur took many bites from the monkeys and though they were defeated, the monkeys strange bites seemed to have an odd affect on Urgur. Worse yet, when the monkeys were killed, an acidic goo would spray on anyone nearby, burning like acid.
Urgur began to feel an unnatural rage and a hunger for fresh meat that he could not explain. The group soldiered on though, arriving to find the Cove in a pandemonium. Ships were burning on the water and some sort of gory battle had played out on the beach. Compounding the fact of the chaotic beach head was difficult access to the Cove itself. The group decided to take a battered walkway down one at time. This worked out for the first three to cross, but then one of the burning boats gave way, smashing into the old walkway as the others tried to cross. No one was injured thanks to Dyn's keen eyesight. The rest of the group reached the bottom via Feather Fall spells.
Once on the beachhead, the group began a search, noting that one of the vessels, The Sea Wyvern, was still intact and had not been affected by the fire. While searching the beach, the group was attacked by some sort of mutated, savage humanoids who seemed to have the same problems the monkeys had. The beasts seemed to shrug off damage and not only attacked with scimitars but with their vicious mouths as well. The group defeated them, then headed into the cove itself where they encountered more signs of struggle and more of the mutant humanoids. Further ventures into the caves had the group attacked by some sort of mutated dinosaur (which Dyn managed to delay nicely with a web spell) and a creature that looked like a cross between a racoon and a monkey. These savage creatures all seemed to have an inhuman desire for fresh meat. What the hell had happened here in Kraken's Cove?

Steel Dragons (is name of group) is come back to Sasser... Sass... Sassercity and is go to temple of Kord for to make Urgur better so no is want for to eat... people.

After sister dead, Steel Dragons is go to house of noble lady for to stop bad man from kill lady. On way to noble lady, is see big worm wagon going fast, fast in street! Moors is not see wagon in time and is stand in path so Tiir is run and push Moors out of way. Tiir is get out of way too, so is safe. Wagon come charge at Urgur! But Urgur is priest of Kord! Urgur pray to Kord for to make stronger even than bull! Urgur let rage take Urgur and feel power of anger make Urgur even more stronger! Urgur no is let stupid wagon stop Urgur! Urgur stop wagon! Urgur plant feet hard on ground and no let wagon pass.
City people behind Urgur thank Urgur for save life but Urgur tell people, "If is want for to thank, can thank Kord. Is Kord save life by make people strong, no is Urgur. Kord make you strong too if pray strong."
Steel Dragons is go more for to find noble lady but big clowns throw fire and try for to stop Steel Dragons. We no like so we stop clowns. If make clowns fall down from tall, clowns no wake up too good.
So now we go more to find lady. Urgur hope no more stops Steel Dragons, but if stop again, Urgur know Kord is make group strong for to live.

Kord give strong to group and group win fight... but Tiir no live. Tiir is try for to charge past friend of captain lady but walk into scimitar (is like sword but curvy swoopy) and get through neck. Head almost come off body, was so bad cut. Tiir no can live from that.
Noble lady is say maybe can help for to get Tiir back from dead but must make lady safe first.
So now Steel Dragons is must make lady safe in house.

Urgur is want next for to learn how to make magic axe!

Them is use magic, so no can play! So Urgur is fight in Weakly Games alone.

Fight is go fast. Urgur is hit ape hard with axe two times when ape is come close to Urgur. Ape is try to grab Urgur and is very strong ((the ape rolled a 27 on his Grab attempt)) but Urgur have strength of Kord so no can be stronger! ((Urgur rolled a natural 20 on his Strength check to resist the grab for a total of 29!)) Urgur hit ape one more time and ape no can stand against strength of Kord!
Urgur is win monies but is want for to teach people of Sassercity that Kord is bring strong to all so is give some of monies to church of Kord and then half of monies to people in arena. Urgur say to people that money is come from Kord because strength is come from Kord. Urgur is show people that strength of Kord is for all and can make life better for all. Strength of Kord is bring monies for all!
After fights, Steel Dragons is meet new pet of Amrhil, called Fluffy. Is bitey, toothy dinosaur. Urgur think name funny because Fluffy no is very fluffy at all! Har, har, har!
After time go by, noble lady is sent note for Steel Dragons to come meet for to help more. Steel Dragons is go for to learn lady is need help to go to bad island. Is called Island of Dead. Once again, I present to you a character background. You'd think I'd be getting good at this, eh?
Born Fillius Whistlegap, he was raised in the small town of Freeman’s Ferry along the Emerald River, just southwest of Evermire. Short even for a Halfling, Fillius allowed his temper to rule much of his thoughts. Easily provoked (especially by “short” comments) he spent the majority of his formative years in fist fights, most of which he lost. His parents (Grillin and Trealla Whistlegap) tried their best to teach him how to avoid conflict, how to turn the other cheek, or how to control his temper. Finally, after bailing his broken and bruised body out of the local jail again, they asked for help from the Magistrate overseeing his most recent legal issue. It was from him they learned of the Monastery of the Crescent Star, some 2 days due south deep into the mountains. Traveling there, the head of the order Tao Zhi Wen saw the beleaguered parents, and after meeting young Fillius, immediately agreed to allow him entry. Waiving the normal donation
required to join the monastery, Tao claimed that something was special about Fillius, and that under the correct guidance he would become one of the strongest members of his order, and in time may replace Tao as head if he so desires.
With that, Fillius’ parents returned to Freeman’s Ferry, and Fillius began his new life. He trained for over 8 years, regularly visiting his parents in Freeman’s Ferry along with his great aunt Kora in Sasserine. His visits to Sasserine increased after his parents perished in an accidental fire that nearly destroyed the entire town.
During his training, he changed his name from Fillius Whistlegap to Ta Shi Xiao Da Xiao Ding Yao He Ji Qiao Da Yu Shen Cai Ta De Di Di Shen Ti, and adopted the nickname Flea. He finally began to find focus in his life, in the blending of arcana and self discipline and the constant training in both mind and body. By his 26th birthday (4 years after his parents passed) he was told that he should leave the monastery, to experience the world and all its wonders in order to fully realize his potential. He put this off, feeling that he wasn’t ready, that his ability to control his temper was not strong enough yet. He continued training for 2 more years, when word reached him that the last member of his family, his sweet great aunt Kora, had passed away under strange circumstances. Taking this as a sign, he left the monastery for Sasserine one more time, this time to find out exactly what had happened and if possible, ensure those responsible for her death
were brought to justice.

My dear Master Goodwin,
I must apologize for my lack of letters since I left the Grove but you know I was never fond of writing. I hope you are well and things are as I left them.
I suppose you are wondering how I am doing and for the most part I have been well. I'm almost getting used to the city. I realize I spent most of my youth here but coming back here was like traveling to a different land. People will talk about the chaos of nature but it is nothing compared to the strange energy contained within the walls of a city.
As for my adventures here hmmm...where to start. I guess the beginning is as good as any. Well it wasn't a week after I arrived that I had received an invitation to a noblewoman's house. I guess those letters you had me deliver were more than just correspondance. Her name was Lavinia Vanderboren and she wanted to hire a group of us to help her reclaim her estate and the wealth that went with it. While I have never been one to worry about such things I decided to go along because as you have said it is not the destination but the journey from which you learn things.
The group then consisted of a variety of individuals each from varying backgrounds. There were a couple of priests, a sailor, a streetwise rougish lad and a sorcerer. We completed the first task given to us by Miss Lavinia which was to search and recover her parents personal effects from her ship which was impounded. It appears the impounding was done for more nafarious reasons and they were most likely using the vessel to smuggle rare animals. There was a most maginificient spider like creature aboard something the likes of I've never seen. Unfortunately we had no choice but to kill the poor creature as it had been driven mad by hunger and captivity I suspect.
Well my hand tires but I will send you another letter as soon as I can for soon my companions and I ship out for a long sea voyage but I will tell you about that later.
Your student,
Amrhil

Wen Sensei:
Konnichiwa. I hope this message finds you at peace. I have established communication with my Great Aunt's employer, Vanderboren Lavinia-sama. Lavinia-sama has informed me that Aunt Kora was killed when Lavinia-sama’s estate was invaded by nasty frog creatures. She then told me that a group of adventurers she had hired called the Company of the Steel Dragon rescued her, though they were unfortunately too late to save Aunt Kora. I have asked both Lavinia-Sama and the Steel Dragons if I may travel with them for a time, until the fiends behind this have been brought forth to justice. They have agreed, though I suspect the Dragons are a little leery of me. I accept this, as it will now be my challenge to show them how strong the training of the Crescent Star is. They say we will be departing for parts unknown at a place called “The Isle of Dread” so I am unsure how often I will be able to send word of my journey. Fear not, Sensei. I will find a way to share my journey with you, so that you can share in my growth.
Until then, your humble servant, Flea

GlimmTheGnome |
Letter to Roderik Dolaine:
Brother,
Time has passed so quickly, and it seems so long since I last saw you. In the employ of Lavinia Vanderboren, I have risked my life repeatedly and seen my friends fall, but I feel that I must continue along this path. If we do not continue to aid Lavinia and seek out her brother, a treacherous madman, then I feel that the losses will be for nothing.
I am leaving the city I have called my home since birth, for an island that I hope is a better place than its name implies. I hope that through aiding the colony founded by Lavinia's parents, we may do a great service that will have my fallen friends smiling upon us from the paradises of the upper planes.
Forgive me for how we parted and fare well. I fear that I may never return to Sasserine. Say goodbye to Sara for me.
- Kavin

Yes, I know you love ships, but I don't, if it weren't for visiting new places I'd... No! You stay out of the barrels and only eat what I give you, I don't want you to get anyone sick. Fine, here's some cheese, now settle down. You can find a lady rat sometime when I'm trancing so I don't have to hear about it all in my head.
Now as I was saying, I'm so glad we finally left the academy. At first it was best to help me forget Cenda, but there is only so much one can learn from reading tomes, and the freedom to really open up and use my evocation prowess is building on itself. I can feel the world surging beneath me when I cast, like it is calling out to be unleashed. Even you, this little language we are developing is incredible. I can almost understand everything you say and nobody else can... *sigh* No, I didn't see which way the fat one went, and yes I'm sure she's had hundreds of children. Here's some meat, now just be quiet.
This group seems to have their heart in the right place, and I'm so thankful to be able to test and expand my power. The academics just don't understand. Control is just another illusion. The more you control you give up, the more powerful the surges you can unleash... *Dyn's hand glowing as he manipulates some reddish-orange energy with a grin on his face*
OK, fine, Vorl, I'll rest now. Give me a good 5 minutes to get fully in trance, er, um, when you are finished eating this I should be able to completely block you out. No, for the tenth time, I will not cast Enlarge on you! I'm sure she has very hot red eyes, now good night.

Lens |
Bah, another day aboard this boat. So much manual work and no real time to read or expand the mind. At least you have the lady, er, female rats to keep you company.
I swear, this group, sometimes travelling with it seems more like babysitting or even zookeeping than exploring and learning. I shouldn't complain as at least our bizarre group seems to get along pretty well. That meal last night was awkward with Lavinia's crowd being the hideous mess that it is. I was starting to think I should have just tossed you on he table to eat like you wanted and Am could have had Fluffy come over to eat, Tolin, heh, I mean just eat. It's not like that meal could have been much worse, and with all that trouble to get over there and back...
At least we haven't had to deal with anything nastier than a water mephit so far while at sea, well, unless you count the "noble". I was sooooo hoping he would stay on Lavinia's ship.
Ugh, the waves, it gets so boring. Power, power is the answer... With enough power I would never have to travel again.

Urgur was think will be fun for to go on adventure on ship! But now, Urgur no is so sure...
Trouble is start with stupid noble person for want to take horse on ship! Ship no is have room for horse and Steel Dragons is say to noble, "No can take horse on ship!" Noble person is argue, argue, argue but what Steel Dragons say no can take, NO CAN TAKE! Finally, noble person is agree for to no take horse on ship.
THEN, noble person is need to get important things from noble house so Steel Dragons is wait for noble person... and wait... and wait... and wait... and finally Urgur is go for to be sure noble person no is in danger, maybe is get hurt. Urgur is find noble person lay on bed with boots off brushing hair! Is important thing?! Urgur is say to noble, "You come NOW, or you no come! Ship leave NOW!" Urgur leave house for to tell ship to sail and noble is come fast after so is make it on ship before leave. Is lucky. Ship no wait for stupid noble if comb hair is important thing for to make ship wait!
After days, Lavinia Noble Lady is want for to bring ships together for to have dinner all together! Is sound like fun to Urgur. Ships is come close and then there is much rope and grapple hook and is bridge of rope! Is like magic! But with rope.
At dinner, Urgur is learn of priest of Her Oney Us on ship of Lavinia. Her Oney Us is god of Rightness and Goodness in Fight so Her is sound good to Urgur. Urgur is want for to learn more about Her so maybe will talk to priest again soon. Urgur also promise for to help build shrine to Her so She can spread Rightness and Goodness in Fight at faraway place where we go.
After dinner, Steel Dragons is go back to ship on rope bridge thingey when rope is break and Kavin is fall into water! Urgur is fear for Kavin drown, so Urgur is grab rope and jump in water (Urgur is have magic crystal for to make armor floaty so can swim) but Kavin is use magic for to pop onto ship from water. Urgur not know Kavin can do that or else Urgur no would have jump in water. Urgur swim back and climb rope for to get back on ship.
Then, when Steel Dragons is all on ship again, Moors is attacked by flying little watery man-thingy! Moors climb ship ropes fast, fast and is attack back but flying little watery man-thingy is fly away to other part of ship so no can reach. Then, Fluffy is run and jump high, high and is chomp flying little water man-thingy to death.
After fight, Steel Dragons is find broken jar in pool of watery stuff. Some is think maybe flying little watery man-thingy is carry jar and drop for to fight but Urgur is think maybe flying little watery man-thingy is come FROM jar. Urgur is think maybe someone on ship is let thing go for to attack Steel Dragons. Amrhil is say maybe someone is hide on ship for to hurt Steel Dragons!
After find broken jar, Moors, Dyn, and Urgur is search whole ship top to bottom but no can find no one hiding. Urgur is want for to search all crew for to find maybe someone is disguised but captain no think is good for morale of crew. Urgur think dead crew also no is good for morale of crew but no argue for now.
So Urgur was think will be fun for to go on adventure on ship! But now, Urgur no is so sure...

No have more badness from flying little watery man-thingies or rope bridges so Urgur is glad.
Was sailing next to shore when Dyn is see smoke with elfy eyes. Urgur is mean, smoke no have elfy eyes, Dyn is have elfy eyes. Dyn is see far away with elfy eyes, smoke on beach.
Smoke on beach is mean trouble so Steel Dragons is go to trouble for to see if can help!
Steel Dragons is find hut on beach on fire! Urgur is mean, beach no is on fire, hut is on fire. Hut on beach is on fire! Is what Urgur mean.
Steel Dragons is see big bald human man stand over dead woman on beach with little girl scream for help. Before Steel Dragons can get to beach, bald man and three helpers is kill little girl! Urgur is get very mad at kill little girl!
Urgur and Kavin is try for to use giant crossbow on ship for to hit bald man but no can aim good so Urgur and Kavin is miss. But is okay, because bald man and helpers is come swim out to Wyvern ship for to come to Steel Dragons!
Them is swim VERY fast and Urgur think is must be magic or maybe is priest of fish god. Bald man and helpers is have two sharks what swim next to Wyvern ship for to make crew no jump in water, so maybe can talk to sharks, too.
Helpers is get to ship first because Steel Dragons is use magic and arrows to hurt bald man from across water. Helpers is come up onto ship but Steel Dragons is wait for to climb up and is kill helpers as them is climb onto ship. One helper is die on deck of Wyvern ship but other two is fall into water and is get eated by sharks.
Dyn is say helpers is have magic but sharks eat helpers so no can get magic. Unless...
Rest of Steel Dragons is kill bald man when him come up onto ship, but Urgur is ask Kord for to make strong so can live and is jump into water for to kill sharks and get magic from shark bellies!
Urgur is jump onto one shark and hurt shark bad! Crocodile what was summoned by Amrhil is grab shark and magic from someone up on ship is finish shark. Urgur no could see who make magic what kill shark because magic is come from up on ship and Urgur now is in water with one dead shark, much much blood, and one very angry big, big shark!
Urgur is use all strength from Kord to drive falchion down into brain of shark and is almost kill shark in one hit! Crocodile is finish shark and Steel Dragons is all no hurt.
Moors and Urgur is go to beach but no can find alive. Moors and Urgur is bury mother and girl and Urgur is say prayer for to give strength in next life.
Then is back to Wyvern ship. Was sad day for see mother and girl die for nothing. Is make Urgur want to teach ALL strength of Kord so bald man no can kill mother and little girl.
Urgur is hope next time can see smoke sooner so can kill bald man before him make others hurt.

Hmm, I have to be careful what I say around this group. All I said was, "Save the gear!", and Urgur jumped out of a perfectly good boat onto a pair of giant sharks.
Yes, Vorl, I know it's his own fault if he dies, but this group has proven quite competent and useful in battle. I believe if we continue to help them our mutual strength will continue to grow, and that means our personal power will increase.
Sit still a second, I want to try a new spell I've been working on on you. Yes, it is finished, just let me write that last bit. Look at your little rat legs go. Fine, go show off for the ladies, I've got better things to do anyway.
*Dyn sits with his eyes glowing of fire as he writes in his spellbook with a crazied grin on his face.* "Yes, yes! Lots of fire..."

"Father Feres" is really an ex-criminal smuggler that took a sealed box to the shrine of Heironeous, was knocked out, but has no idea who or what knocked him out, and then woke up with a scar on his abdomen and got back on our boat.
Days later, he fell terribly ill and Amhril and Urgur found a growth inside his abdomen. Believing their prayers or spells could cure him, if they could rest and prepare themselves for the task, Flea, Kavin, and I watched over the "Father" while the others went to rest. When it became clear he wouldn't last until morning we woke them and they attempted surgery as best they could. Urgur insisted on using his falchion at first, but when it almost killed the "Father" we eventually talked him into using my dagger. Eventually, the pair was able to retrieve a Red Slaad egg from the half-elf.
Having some knowledge of Slaads from my studies I explained what they are and what I remember of them to the rest of our group, the "Father", and the captain.
With Amrhil and Urgur able to start to poke a few holes into who the "Father" really was, we were able to get him to confess to being a smuggler or worse. We informed the captain, and with her agreement convinced the waste of elven flesh to continue to be among the others of the ship and tell us if he sees or hears anything peculiar. He is no doubt in this now, and if we have a saboteur on board, they may try to finish the smuggler, if the attept on his life was directed at us (which it would seem, otherwise why not just kill him at the shrine, since he was already unconcious) and they were aware of that part of this plot.
We confiscated his wand of healing as punishment for lying to us and stowing aboard our ship under false pretenses. He can't really use it anyway and was probably just planning to smuggle and sell it for a small fortune.
*stops writing*
Alright, here is some cheese. Looks like a storm approaching. The captain says we'll need to moor The Wyvern somewhere to best ride out the storm.

As I was unable to attend this week's meeting I cannot comment on the events that transpired, from Urgur's perspective. So I thought I would use this as an opportunity to explain a little bit about what goes on in that half-orcish brain of his. Often I find that writing about these things helps me to solidify the general impressions that float around in my head.
Urgur comes from a warlike barbarian background, having been raised in an orc tribe in the jungles around Cauldron, south of Sasserine. As such, he has a very barbaric mindset even though he is primarily a cleric (Bbn 1/Clr 4). In time, that may change as the group begins to tread ground further and further afield from his savage roots but for now, he is still holding strong to those values with which he was raised: strength of arms, status gained from loot, honor in conquering others. He is not, however, absolutely stuck in his beliefs. Though not highly educated, Urgur is not stupid (Int 10 - average) though he does not speak Common well as he still clings strongly to his orcish heritage and has not yet come to embrace the Common tongue. As time goes by, he will start to see that there is more to life than just upholding the virtues of his childhood and he will start to set his sights on loftier and more noble virtues.
There are many different cultures among the varied barbarian tribes but Urgur comes from a very warlike culture. The Yellowskull tribe does not plant lots of crops and raise lots of animals and hope to prosper from trade; they plant a few crops and raise a few animals and make up the difference in raids against other tribes. Urgur grew up in a tribe that was constantly warring against other orc tribes, gnoll tribes, and evil outsiders that wandered beyond the borders of the nearby Demonskar. As such, the leisure time for the tribe was spent not in domestic pursuits but rather in games of strength, pitting orc against orc, warrior against warrior, winnowing out the weak and ensuring the strong multiply. Female orcs are owned by the strongest males so if you want to extend your family line, you must be the among the strongest males. In Urgur's mind, anything that promotes strength for himself is good. Anything that promotes strength for all is even better as it gives everyone a greater opportunity to overcome those challenges that life brings us.
As has been mentioned a few times in the game, Urgur is very focused on obtaining treasure from his adventuring. The culture in which he was raised values loot as a symbol of status. That which can be captured from one's enemies and held on high is a declaration to all that you are the stronger. The more loot one has, the more evidence of having conquered more foes. And if that means jumping into a ocean of sharks and laying about you with a falchion until you can get the loot from the shark bellies, then all the more is the glory. =o)
If given the choice between escaping conflict, thereby ensuring safety, and embracing conflict, thereby risking life and limb for the greater glory, Urgur will almost certainly choose to charge headlong into the fray. He is almost Heironean in his love of glory. To Urgur, battle is the test of strength, the culmination of all the training, the final determination of who is the greater opponent. The challenge is the whole point of life, to Urgur. Right now, he sees each battle as a personal challenge that must be overcome in order to prove to the world, to his tribe, to Kord, to the Steel Dragons that he is worthy of respect. In time, he will come to see that there is a greater conflict in this world and that some challenges must be faced for the greater good, not just for personal glory.
Urgur also has a long-term goal that he has not truly realized, though it scratches at the back of his mind and sometimes directs his choices without him truly recognizing it yet. The jungles of Urgur's home are far deadlier than they should be due to the impact of the Demonskar, a fiend-infested ruin that has overshadowed the region for decades. The impact of his tribe's experience with the Demonskar has left a mark on Urgur and as a consequence he is subconsciously driven to exorcise these demons from his homeland. He does not quite grasp this yet but many of his life's choices have been driven by this fact of his childhood. His choice to become a cleric was driven by the subconscious need to call upon a higher power to cleanse his homeland of this infestation. His choice of weapons harkens back to stories he heard as a child that cold iron and silver are tools used in the battle against these fiends. He has no concrete plans along this line of thinking and if asked he would deny ever wanting to go to the Demonskar (an odd statement given his proclivity for headlong engagement) but someday in the future (perhaps when the GM feels we need a change of pace or some extra XP), when Urgur comes to see this calling for what it is, a reckoning will be had. And his homeland will be free.

Wen-Sensei
Konban wa. We have set sail, and are rounding the peninsula before heading in a much more southerly direction. I expected to spend most days in meditation and training. The rope obstacle course on this vessel is very intricate. The Seiyuuki-san calls it “rigging,” and I must assume there is some function to it. Anyway, I expected to spend most days in meditation or training but have discovered that these types of voyages are wrought with strange and unusual occurrences. First, our companion boat had a feast where everyone dressed as if they were still on land at a council meeting. Needless to say my plain brown ishou stood out almost as much as my companion’s armor and swords. I still question the purpose of this strange feast, but in the land of strangers one must also be strange. Next, as we returned to our vessel a strange water creature attacked us. I planned to use a fuda that would allow me to leap at the creature, but the one call Amhril-san had a pet that ate it instead. Then the one called Urgur-san discovered a bottle coated in water, so it seems it may have been set upon us. We will investigate this further on the morrow.
With that, I must retire to my allotted resting. Your humble servant, Flea.

Konnichiwa. We have just returned to our trip after a strange detour. The one called Dyn-san was up in the place the Seiyuuki-san calls the “Crow’s Nest” when he spotted smoke and flame. We informed our companion ship through strange lights that we would investigate, then sailed closer to the shore. As we neared, we saw strange men attacking the remains of a small village. Before we could get close enough, one of the men murdered a little girl, before turning his attention to our vessel. His comrades leapt into the water, and with amazing speed headed strait for us. Even more strange, the giant sharks in the water ignored them. I invoked a Fuda of Protection and a Fuda of Strength, before demonstrating to the first despicable heathen the power of the Crescent Star. The one called Urgur-san and Kavin-san attempted to use the large ballista on the remaining man on shore, but missed. The man on shore then also leapt into the water and swam out to meet us. Which suited us fine, as it saved us the hassle of trying to find a way to him. As he came onboard, we greeted him with fist, fang, and steel. He lasted mere moments. What happened next though makes me worry. Urgur-san decided to leap into the water after the giant sharks, screaming something about “Steel Dragon treasure!” as his axe nearly cleaved the beast in two. Before I could react, both sharks were dead and being hoisted out of the water. I was under the assumption that we would be dining on sushi tonight, but it turns out they were more interested in what items might be on the bodies currently residing in the monsters stomach. THIS is why those of the Crescent Star need not material items. What good is armor or jewelry if you must cut through the stomach of a giant shark to obtain it? Again, I still follow my path to enlightenment aboard this vessel. Your humble servant, Flea.

Forgive my long pause in writing, but my spell is not strong enough yet to cross great distances, so I must wait until we once again head south before sending. I find this trip to be most intriguing, as much happens that one would not expect upon such a voyage. Not only have we met strange men who do not understand the concept of “moderation,” we have feasts, slay imps, defeat child killing heathens and destroy treasure eating sharks, but now we have holy Houshi-sama who are not actually Houshi, and carry strange demon eggs embedded in their flesh. Yes, demon eggs. Yes, buried in his flesh. It seems Urgur-san views himself a doctor, as he practiced surgery trying to remove the egg several times. Once removed, the houshi-sama admitted to his farce, and informed us that he was to deliver a package to a temple in one of the ports we stopped at. Shortly after delivering the package he became ill and that is when we found the demon egg. We wonder if maybe this was an attempt to destroy our vessel? Anyway, he lives and we are continuing on our way. We have anchored in a cove for the night, though it sounds as if something is amiss on deck. I will send again when time permits, Sensei. Your humble servant, Flea.

Konnichiwa. Once again, I must describe the oddities that occur on this vessel. The commotion I mentioned in my last post was a strange creature of slime and debris. We vanquished it easily (though Amhril-san was hurt due to investigating the oddity as it approached our vessel) and once again, Urgur-san decided that now would be a good time for swimming. Then, several days later Kavin-san became quite ill, and it was determined that he had been poisoned. Urgur-san called it Arsenic, and claimed it to be very hard to obtain. While Kavin recuperated from his sickness, we investigated the ship to determine who may have done something so heinous. According to the lady who was cooking that evening, she only left the soup long enough to grab the spices before returning. Using some minor magic, we determined that the entire soup was indeed poisoned. We located those who had not eaten, including the suspicious “nobleman” and interrogated them by getting them to eat a bowl of soup recently prepared so that it resembled the nights dinner. The “nobleman” declined so we threw him into the sail locker until Urgur-san could pray for a spell that would force the truth from him. Unfortunately, he was speaking the truth, though full of bitterness and arrogance. Wen-Sensei, I wish he could partake in a few of your character building sessions to help him realize his place better. The ship began to get restless, and suspicion was rampant. In an attempt to find the culprit, we are now investigating the entire ship. We will move all the passenger and crew to the deck before searching every nook and cranny for anything hidden. I plan to bring a sack of flour in case the culprit is invisible, though Amhril-san claims he can cast a spell that allows him to see the invisible. I will write again once our search has concluded. As always, your humble servant Flea.

My dear Master Goodwin,
I hope these letters are reaching you as I had a hard time finding someone willing to take them all the way to the grove deep in the rainforest. Hopefully the few extra gold I spent was worth it.
As I had previously told you I had obtain gainful employment with a Miss Lavinia. After we had 'liberated' some items on her ship she asked us to accompany her to her parents vault in the city. Upon opening the vault we discovered that someone has stolen much of her inheritance. She was rather crestfallen.
She then asked us to help find her brother, Vanthus. After we had asked around we were approached by a man who claimed he knew where the man was. We accompanied the man to a small island in the bay and were led to an underground complex. We entered but unfortunately for us and more so to our guide Vanthus had set up a trap for us. He trapped us in the caves beneath the surface of the isle. We encountered some of the unliving and though it seemed like a lifetime down in the dank caverns we made our escape. During our time under the island we discovered that Vanthus had double crossed an associate who before dying left a message giving us details as to where we could find our newfound enemy. Needless to say may were eager to exact revenge for his attempt to kill us.
The message mentioned a group known as the lotus dragons. Apparently Vanthus joined this 'gang' and had obviously fallen in with a rather different crowd than his sister. We agreed to investigate the matter for her. After some of the others more attuned to the city life did some investigating we were told of a place to start our search. Our starting point on this foray was a taxidermist’s shop. We didn’t have much luck with the proprietor which was rather unfortunate for him as he was decapitated by one of our group. The bloody start of this adventure proved to be a foretelling sign as two of our group died fighting the members of the lotus dragons.
I know that you have always taught me that death is just part of the cycle of life but it is difficult to keep that in perspective. We didn’t have much time to dwell on the death of our comrades however which in hindsight was probably a good thing. In the end we discovered the woman running the gang and dispatch her. She tried to negotiate with us but with the death of two friends fresh in our minds I don’t think she had much of a chance.
While we did the city a great favor by ridding it of a well organized criminal group we did not find Vanthus. However we did find rather grim news for his sister. It appears that Vanthus was responsible for his own parent’s death all to collect inheritance. On top of that he had written where he would be striking next…a secret cove not far from the city. Lavinia in her anger had then asked us to bring Vanthus to justice and soon after that we left to catch up to the wayward brother.
Well I must go. We are very busy outfitting our ship. I will tell you all about it soon.
Your student always,
Amrhil

Vorl, do you see what I did with my pen? Oh, here it is nevermind. That enormous ooze creature was very interesting. I wonder if a mage somewhere created it or controlled it... Hmm, powerful mindless creatures as allies...I may eventually wish to research how one can create such things.
Be careful what you eat and drink. NO SNEAKING SNACKS! I don't know what might happen if you consumed some of the poison. Don't complain about the wasted food, at least it was poison and they didn't start blaming you or Amrhil's beast for spreading some sort of disease.

Konban wa. I seem to have fallen in with a group who has made its share of enemies. The culprit was a woman who had enspelled herself to look just like one of the crew members, and upon our discovery of a body in the hold, changed to look like an existing crew member. I was able to put your Douten Genkotsu technique to excellent use, as it allowed Urgur-san to rush up and cleave the stunned culprit in twain. Quick and decisive was the judgment. After her fall, her features reverted to their normal state which the rest of the party recognized as very similar to a fallen enemy from before I arrived. I am now beginning to worry what other surprise enemies could take such underhanded measures for petty revenge. I must accept this as another part of my greater journey…
We have arrived at the place called Tamoachan, where one of the passengers has requested we accompany him on an investigation of the ancient ruins. I shall inform you of how these investigations went upon our return, Sensei. Your humble servant, Flea

Ship is attack! Ship is attack by giant sticky oozy monster thing made of bits of floaty junk!
Steel Dragons is protect ship and fight off giant sticky oozy monster thing and keep thing from getting up on deck of ship. Thing is die from many magics and weapons and Steel Dragons is find magic ring of protect mind stuck in giant sticky oozy monster thing made of bits of floaty junk. Some of floaty junk is dead bodies and one of bodies is have magic ring.
After ship is attack and Steel Dragons is fight off giant sticky oozy monster thing made of bits of floaty junk, ship is go back to normal and keep sailing for to reach Isle of Dead. But then...
Ship is poison! All crew is feel sick but most is able to fight off sick. Kavin no can fight off sick and is very no-feel-good! Steel Dragons is look for poison and is find poison in soup! No is just a bit of bad food either... is arsenic! Steel Dragons think no is accident for to find arsenic in soup. Steel Dragons is get very tired of more and more try to kill at every step.
First is cut rope bridge to drown Steel Dragons, then is flying little watery man-thing, then is poison ship! Steel Dragons is have enough! Steel Dragons is talk to captain and captain is agree so Steel Dragons is make all crew come up to deck so can search whole ship for good and last!
Before search is start, cook is tell Steel Dragons that maybe see person hiding in hold of ship, behind rope and crate. Steel Dragons is tell cook to wait on deck and is go down to hold. In hold, Steel Dragons is find dead person of crew stuffed behind rope and crate! No can find no one hiding, so is go back to deck for to maybe find person who is pretend to be dead person of crew.
But on deck, is find two cooks! Urgur is mean, is find cook twice! Is two persons, both look like cook! But Urgur is have prayer of Detect Evil and can see one cook is have hands up and is say, "No hurt me" but other cook is have rapier out and is look like about to run cook through AND is evil!

ArchAnjel |

With magic and fists of Free and weapons, Steel Dragons is manage to kill evil cook very fast, fast. Urgur sad for to kill evil person so no can ask questions, but is too late now.
Body of evil cook, after is dead, is look very much like fire-haired woman what Steel Dragons is kill long ago and what was dig up from grave and is go missing! Urgur is think maybe is sister of fire-haired woman and is use magic for to make look like cook. Captain of ship is have ceremony for to bury sister of fire-haired woman and dead member of crew. Urgur is pray at ceremony and bodies is slide into ocean. Is sad, but ship is sail on.
Soon, ship is come to ruin place, Tamoah... Tam... some ruin place. Gnome is tell Steel Dragons of ruin place and is say maybe is balsilik... basilkis... maybe is bad lizard what is make people turn to stone. Basilisk! Is called basilisk! Urgur remember now.
Silly gnome is run off into jungle screaming loud, loud! Gnome is very happy for to see ruins but is make hard for Steel Dragons to come sneak to ruins. Gnome is run ahead fast and Amrhil is send Fluffy for to go get gnome. Steel Dragons is come to clearing with giant statues and is see Fluffy drag gnome back on other side of clearing when all of sudden...
Giant huge many-leg worms is attack Steel Dragons! Urgur is think many-leg worms is big when find in boot in morning, but this worms is HUGE! Is bigger even than Urgur! Is bigger even than Urgur when Urgur is pray for Kord to make Urgur big! Is HUGE!
Is three of worms and worms is hard to hit with falchion! (I rolled two 3's and a 5 on my attacks before finally killing the last of the creatures, missing three of my four attacks.) Steel Dragons is finally kill with much magic and very strong fists of little Free!
After fight, Urgur is tie rope to gnome so no can run away into jungle screaming for happy again. Steel Dragons is move more along path and finally is come to ruins. Steel Dragons is see many new statues of persons in armor, just like Steel Dragons is in armor.
Urgur is think maybe... BASILISK!

Thanks very much! He's a lot of fun to play. He talks just like that when we're in-game too, though there is a decent amount of out-of-character discussion so I don't ALWAYS talk like Urgur. But enough that people enjoy making fun of the way Urgur talks. heh heh
Eventually, I will need to start getting him more and more adapted to speaking Common. It's going to be a slow process and I'm not exactly sure how to transition into it but I'm finding little changes that I can make here or there. For example, he occasionally uses pronouns now, though not often and not correctly. But it's a step.
If anyone has suggestions for how to transition his broken Common to something that eventually approaches fluency, I'm all ears. =o)
Shannon
P.S. As an example of making fun of how Urgur talks, when we first started using Ventrilo for voice communication, it was suggested that each person preface their comment with their character name ("Moors says, 'I think we should...'") It was joked that I had an unfair advantage in that regard since almost everything Urgur says begins with something like, "Uhhhhhhh... Urgur is think maybe is good idea for to..."

Lens |
Vorl, stay out of that blood! I'm not sure if that red haired harlot was just using magic to allow her to appear as others or if she really was some sort of doppleganger. You don't need to splash around in the blood anyway, it'll disgust the others. Maybe next time we finally feret out and destroy an evil wench there will be fewer people around.
Yes, it was a beautiful slice, cutting her in twain. I loved the reaction of the passengers to the whole thing. They didn't understand what was going on, and with the blood splattering all over Flea and the look on Urgur's face...the crew was in shock...I could feel the confusion, the fear, the panic, the chaos! Best yet, the halfling and orcish one took care of the light work without me even having to waste any of my energies.
The gnome keeps going on about the ruins of this place called Tamoachan. Hopefully he knows something about the place that he isn't letting on about. I can't see anyone getting so excited about seeing a ruin unless there are great riches or powerful magic items involved, especially if he really thinks there is a basilisk there. If this is some sort of elaborate trap, the gnome will need to die very, very, slowly. Some of the others may not have the stomach for these sorts of tasks, so we may have to step in. "The laws of men", heh.

Steel Dragons is too fast for balisisk... err... basilisk!
Steel Dragons is think basilisk maybe is near because find statues what is look like adventurers, so Steel Dragons is very careful! Moors is have good idea for to go back to big huge worms and get fresh worm meat for to bring basilisk out from cave. Is good idea, so can make basilisk look at meat instead of look at Steel Dragons!
But nnnNNNNOoOOOOOOOOooo... stupid gnome Urol is no want for to go back for meat and is only want for to go straight to ruins! Gnome is walk straight to cave! Urgur is keep head down but rush forward to grab stupid gnome and carry away from cave... but then is hear lizardy hiss from inside cave... BASILISK!
Urgur is close eyes tight for to no be turned to rocks! Urgur is hear lizard charge from cave for to eat Urgur! As basilisk is come close, Urgur is hear voice of Kavin and then roar of magic fire on lizard, and also sound of longbow from Moors. Urgur is hear someone come close to Urgur and then voice of Amrhil pray for to make Urgur see with eyes tight closed.
All of suddenness, Urgur is see when no can see! Eyes still is closed tight, tight for to no turn to rocks, but still can see! Is like Urgur now can SEE sounds but with mind, no with eyes. Can see shape of Amrhil is stand next to Urgur, can see rustle of leaf in trees bounce off rocks of cave, can see scrape of ground from big lizard-shape with eight legs... BASILISK!
Urgur is charge at lizard with falchion high and eyes closed. Urgur is bring falchion down hard, hard on basilisk and can hear blood squirt far! Almost can feel heat from blood for to see blood fly through air with mind. Basilisk almost is dead, Urgur can tell, when Fluffy is rush up to finish basilisk with claws and bites.
Was fast fight! Basilisk is charge from cave but Steel Dragons is all rush to attack and basilisk no can hurt no one. Steel Dragons is too fast for basilisk!
After fight is done, Steel Dragons is clean up and look into caves. Can see two caves and is choose one for to go in. Cave is go into big scary-carving room. Room is have carvings of skeletons and snakes and is all misty in room. Is have table in middle but Urgur think maybe is altar. Urgur is feel very bad when come in room so Urgur is hold out star of Kord and is pray to Kord for to give strong to Good and push back Evil! Room is feel better now. Kord is push back Evil because Evil no can fight power of Kord!
As Steel Dragons is move around room for to explore, wall to south is become fire! Is wall of fire from right side to left side! And is start for to move closer! Urgur is follow Free out of room through small little tunnel but is turn back when no see rest of Steel Dragons come too.
Urgur is see Dyn and Moors still is try for to escape and stupid gnome Urol is run more deeper INTO room instead of OUT of room! Brave, brave Moors is rush to corner for to save life of stupid, stupid gnome. Moors is grab stupid gnome and jump through wall of fire together and Urgur is rush to heal gnome. Urgur is think maybe is good idea for to heal Moors first but monkey-man Moors is find way to jump through fire and only lose hair from monkey butt! Urol is almost die but Urgur is call strong of Kord from belt of healing and make heal flow to body of stupid, stupid gnome for to save life. Dyn too is use belt of healing for to make body stronger after wall of fire burn Dyn.
All is alive and fire now is gone. Urgur is want for to heal group and explore more but no is sure what to do about stupid, stupid gnome. Urgur is understand gnome no is adventurer but when say to gnome for to get OUT of room, but gnome is instead go INTO room, is put life of Steel Dragons in danger. Urgur no can just let gnome die, but no can let gnome kill Steel Dragons, neither. Urgur is think gnome maybe is need for to go back on leash - Urgur maybe should tie rope again to belt of gnome. Or maybe is best for to tie gnome to tree outside and only is let gnome into ruins when Steel Dragons is make safe. Hrm. Maybe is need for to talk to Steel Dragons when group is safe and make plan for what Steel Dragons is do with stupid, stupid, STUPID gnome.
Hrm.

I'm so glad I bought this belt! Whew, looks like my spellbook and scrolls survived the flames.
A basilisk and a nasty fire trap...must be something here worth protecting. No, not food, hopefully powerful magic items or large numbers of coins to purchase them with.
Hmm, Urgur and Moors managed to save the gnome. Oh well, it must not have been his minute, but I'm pretty sure it is his day. Regardless, it would seem we have some things to "discuss" with our thoughtless little companion.

Master Goodwin,
I must admit I am a bit rushed to get this letter finished to send off to you. I leave tomorrow on a long sea voyage for the Isle of Dread. Before I go I must tell you about I have discovered as it may be the source of your terrible dreams.
Our group, who by now has taken the name Steel Dragons, made our way to a secret cove in pursuit of Vanthus. What we discovered there has haunted my dreams since. People and animals alike had been twisted into horribly mutated forms and their very nature had changed into a voracious and savage beast. We found out the hard way that this disease could be passed from one creature to the next by way of receiving bites from the infected creature. Alas, Barkley had succumbed to this terrible fate. I would have grieved longer for my dear companion but the perils we faced in that cove allowed me to focus my thoughts elsewhere. In the end one of our group had been infected and another who was searching for his sister found what was left of her after being ravaged by this disease. While we were able to find healing for a friend the poor sister had to be put out of her misery.
This is what we were able to discover regarding the disease. The source was a black pearl which broke open to expel a green gas. Most of those who came into contact with the gas contracted the disease and the rest either died by the hands of those who had succumbed to the disease or contracted the disease itself. The disease apparently slowly transforms a person. They get increasingly feral only desiring flesh. I fear that animals who are much closer to the base instinct of savage hunger succumb much quicker. Once the mind has gone the body must follow and the infected creature is twisted to a strange mutated form. Lastly an infected creature upon death instantly explodes in a shower of acid! All this leads me to believe that this pearl was created by something or someone but the very nature of the disease seems far beyond the scope of man. Could this be the meddling of some savage god or perhaps an outsider bent on the destruction on Oerth? I know little beyond this but I see this is a cause worthy of pursuing to its bitter end. While I would not normally be so quick to worry about an affliction which would thin the numbers of man kind this disease does not discriminate.
Unfortunately there are no further leads at the moment. So for lack of any better way to pursue the matter I have decided to stay close to Lavinia hoping her brother may rear his head again and I may interrogate him. This brings me to my trip to the Isle of Dread. Apparently Lavinia’s parents had started a colony on the island in the hopes of bring back exotic items for sale in Sasserine. While I’m not too keen with the plunder of virgin wilderness I will go along in her efforts to support the colony. I will of course make sure that any settlement there is making efforts to keep in harmony with the land.
As I will be gone this will be my last letter for some time. I will try to remember to keep a journal so that I won’t have trouble recalling any of the events of my journey. Maybe once I return we can both pursue the mystery of the black pearl.
Sincerely,
Amrhil

Urgur is sad.
Stupid, stupid gnome is die. =o(
Steel Dragons is look more through ruins and is come to big metal wall. No can find way around wall so Steel Dragons is turn around for to look more through other parts of ruins. Steel Dragons is find room with well and statue and many, many bones. Urgur is think many, many bones never is good thing and is true!
Up from inside well is come big ugly bag of mouths and spit and eyes and drool! Ugly thing is make babbly, jabbery noise what is try to get into head of Urgur but Urgur no let noise in. Urgur hold falchion tight and shake head strong and fight against noise. Urgur is keep control of head and charge at ugly bag of mouths and spit and eyes and drool! Some Steel Dragons is fight noise out of head but rest is gather and fight against creature and ugly bag of mouths and spit and eyes and drool is die fast.
Steel Dragons is find treasure in well but no can find any other rooms so is go back to wall of metal. Steel Dragons is look more but no can find any way around wall so Urgur is use magic axe and decide for to go THROUGH wall. Urgur is beat and beat and beat on wall and soon, hole is come though metal.
Steel Dragons is go through hole and find big open room with smaller room near to south. When Steel Dragons is start to explore, is hear Urol screech from in back! Steel Dragons is turn around fast and see Urol fall to ground next to glowy light. Light is then wink out and Steel Dragons is rush to stupid gnome for to find him is dead.
Steel Dragons is get ready for to look for thing what no can see, but Urgur is sad for to lose gnome. Steel Dragons is try for to keep gnome safe behind group but no is work. Why thing what no can see is try for to kill stupid, stupid gnome?! Urgur no understand! Why kill stupid gnome?! Urgur is very angry and sad at no can protect stupid gnome!
When Urgur is find thing what no can see, Urgur will make pay for kill stupid gnome! Is for sure!

My first journal entry! I thought I would have gotten to this much sooner but learning how to help sail a ship is very time consuming. I think I’ve not gotten the hang of things and have become a reasonable help on this ship. As for our trip it hasn’t been quiet that is for sure…where to start.
Well, not long after we set out we ran into some savages who had apparently killed a woman and child. Fortunately for us we were on our boat at the time and made short work of them. Later we ran into some type of ooze which if not for the quick thinking of Kavin would have certainly killed me. On top of all that we had a stowaway on board trying to kill us. She was the sister of the leader of the lotus dragons whom we had killed. Needless to say she had caused monster attacks, poisoning, accidents and who knows what else. I only wish we had been able to interrogate her a little. Unfortunately Urgur cleaved the woman in two.
Tomorrow we venture to the lost city of Tamoachan. Apparently they are some old Olmec ruins in the jungle. Could be interesting as we are expecting to run into a basilisk. Remote ruins seem to attract the worst creatures. Still a trip through the jungle will do Fluffy and myself some good.
I guess I should say a little bit about my companions. We call ourselves the Steel Dragons. Not sure I care much for the name but in the end it doesn’t matter much. Let me see well there is Moors, a Hadrozee sailor. Definitely happy to be at see again that one is. He seems to be rather good natured and takes care of himself in a fight. Next comes Kavin the sorcerer. He is quiet but agreeable for the most part. Like most sorcerers he flings about magical energies with ease. Next comes Urgur the half-orc priest of Kord. What can I say about Urgur? Strong as a bull and almost always means well. He is a little slow to pick up on everything but there are few I would rather have with me in a fight. Then we have Dyn the elven mage. Like most elves he is a little haughty and doesn’t have the patience to deal with just anyone. His studies of the arcane however have proven invaluable. Last of all is Flea. Not sure where he comes from because his accent is very hard to place. Trained in strange techniques and arcane lore he is very interesting to watch in action.
There is not much to say about the rest of the passangers. Most are decent people but I must admit I know very little about them. I spend almost all of my time above deck helping with the ship. If I know little about the people on our ship I know almost know one on Lavinia’s. I’ve met most of them but have had little chance to speak with them. The Jade Raven’s, another adventuring group, are aboard that ship. While their defacto leader, Tolin, is an ass the rest of their group seem decent enough. In fact on the few occasions I have had to spend time with Lymae she has been rather enjoyable and I dare say she seems to have taken a liking to me. It is a shame we are on separate ships.
Well that is enough for today. When we return from the lost city I will try to remember to write down what we found.

No, Vorl, there are no cracks of any sort or crevices to get around the huge metal wall, not even the tiny type a rat like you can crawl through. We may as well backtrack and look for another way in before we make the noise and take the time required to get through this wall.
Heh, there's the dead basilisk again.
Hmm, this room has a giant statue and a full well in it. What is that? How hideous! Oh, it's talking to me. I don't understand. What? Must kill. Must kill.. Must kill pretty Kavin. He's too pretty, and I must cut him!
Huh? What happened? Oh...I understand! Vorl, did you hear that? Did you feel it? The insanity, the confustion, the wildness! What a beautiful creature! Look at all those eyes and mouths! Does it have a brain? Any organs? I can't seem to find any. Very interesting...
Well, this looks like a dead end. I guess we head back to the metal wall.
Um, Urgur, I think that is going to make an awful lot of... *clang* ...Oh my Elven ears! *hands over ears*
*many deafening hacks later*
Well, at least we can get through now.
What was that squeal? Oh, now the gnome is dead. I was pretty sure it was his day. Yes, yes, I know I'm usually right. Don't suck up...right now. Did you see where that light went? Do you hear or smell anything? No, not me talking! The light Vorl, the source of the light!

Urgur is think Free maybe is part gnome.
Steel Dragons is look for thing what no can see and is search big room for to find where thing is hide. Steel Dragons is search and search but no can find. Free is want for to leave big room and look in other room to south and Urgur is say to Free that maybe no is good idea for to go alone. Free is go alone anyway and is get attack by big flying demony thing with big claws and bitey teeth and nasty breath!
Free is stun big flying demony thing and is make thing fall to ground so no is flying anymore, but is still next to Free, close enough to bite and claw and breathe on him. Steel Dragons is rush to help and Kavin is use magic spell for to make Free move to place of Urgur and Urgur move to place of Free! Urgur is like spell very muchedly! Urgur now is stand next to big not-flying demony thing and is swing falchion high and hard! Urgur is cut into neck of big not-flying demony thing and then Dyn is cast magic spell for to shoot arrows of light into big not-flying demony thing and it no can live through that!
After fight, Steel Dragons is find big pit with many bodies buried in holes in wall of pit. One body is have idol of bat made of gold. Dyn is find some magic on idol but then is look again and no find no magic on idol. Urgur is say to Steel Dragons that no is good idea for to take things from burial place. If was put with dead for spirit to take when leave for next world, then no should take from dead. Is bad thing. But group is take anyway because idol is made of gold and is maybe magic so group is think maybe is special. Dyn is look very close at idol and is say something about maybe is key for something but no can find what is key for.
Steel Dragons is look in big room and Free is find secret hidden sarcoffin...us. Sacrofignus? Is find box with dead person. Free is say dead person is have gold necklace with beads for prayer but Urgur is say is best for to leave with dead person and Steel Dragons is agree.
Free is take idol and is think maybe is good idea for to leave group again and go into other room again alone. Free is get attack again, from sound of screaming what is come from other room. <sigh>
Urgur is think Free maybe is part gnome.

Ugh, we can't find the source of what killed Urol anywhere. I'll need to invest in more magic to aid in dealing with invisible things.
What is Flea carrying on about? Oh, some sort of demon bat! Hmm, it was not very effective in combat. With all this bat motif, I'm starting to think some sort of vampire is hidden here somewhere.
Vorl, remind me to explain everything in small words to Urgur, though watching him flap his arms like an hummingbird was entertaining.
Gah! I'm sure there must be more to this place, but nothing else is turning up! I'm sure this golden bat statue is a key, but how does it work?
What? Where did Flea go? I hope he's not yelling in pain from playing in the fire trap.

Free is die like gnome.
Steel Dragons is rush back to fire room and is find Free in fight against thing what no can see but now can see. Is glowy bright thing and when is hit Free, can see Free shake and jump. Urgur see cousin shake and jump like Free once when young. Urgur and cousin Braagh is play on hilltop in storm when fork of light is jump from sky to ground (or maybe from ground to sky - is hard to tell) and his cousin Braagh and is make him jump and shake. Just like Free.
Urgur is think, "Must save Free!" but when Free is fall and Urgur is see smoke come up from empty eyeballs, Urgur is think no can save Free.
Moors is manage for to hit glowy light ball once before light ball is wink out and disappear. Steel Dragons is grab body of Free and escape ruins before glowy light ball is come back.
Outside ruins, Steel Dragons is rest and heal and talk about what now to do. Moors is think maybe should use magic goopy stuff on people what is turned to statues. Urgur is think good idea for to save people if can. Steel Dragons is take close look at statues and find one what is have holy symbol of Her Oney Us. Steel Dragons is decide for to use magic goopey stuff on statue for to bring back from dead and statue is turn into cleric of Her Oney Us!
Cleric is promise for to bring back Free from dead after rest tomorrow so Steel Dragons is happy! Steel Dragons is bring back other statue too and statue is turn into paladin of Her! Is lucky day for them what is worship Her.
Steel Dragons is take cleric and paladin back to ship and rest for day. Next day, Steel Dragons is pray and study for prayers and spells for to fight light ball thingie and is go back for to get body of stupid gnome, Urol. Steel Dragons is find body but no find light ball yet. Moors is want for to get body and go home to ship but Urgur is want for to kill light ball thingie what is kill Urol and Free so Urgur is look more still. Urgur is find light ball thingie down in deep pit and call Steel Dragons for to make thingie dead.
Dyn is cast magic spell what is cover light ball thingie in glittery gold dust for to make pretty and for to make so can see and then is cast magic light arrows spell for to make 3 arrows of light shoot into light ball thingie. Then Steel Dragons is stand back and get ready for to fight because light ball thingie is come fast, fast up pit!
But Steel Dragons is ready for light ball thingie and Moors is hit with chain as soon as light ball is come up out of pit! Light ball thingie is try for to come at Urgur but Urgur is call on Kord for to make strong and swing falchion hard, hard and is feel falchion slide through middle of light ball thingie. Is feel like go through jelly and make hands of Urgur jump and shake just a little bit when go through middle, but light ball thingie no is light ball no more. Is dead light ball.
Urgur is happy some for to make light ball thingie pay for kill Urol and Free. Urgur still is sad for death of Free and Urol but is good for to know that killer is no can hurt more peoples.
Now Steel Dragons is go back to ship and if lucky, maybe can get to Isle of Dead soon.

Yes, Vorl, I know Flea looks like he is in bad shape. It is shocking him badly. I have some scrolls of resist energy somewhere in there, find one!
WOW! Nevermind! He's dead, find one for us! I'm running us out of here.
I just don't feel right about leaving these statues here. They appear to worship good gods, and we do have these salves. Using it on them does seem to be the right thing to do.
A priest. He can raise someone, but only one someone. Tough choice. Fate should decide. Let's pick up the little gnome and halfling, count to three and throw the 2 bodies at each other. Whichever one lands on top gets to come back. No? Well, whatever then.
Heh. Some paladin. His morals probably prohibited him from coming back to flesh after insulting his god by losing or something.
* having rested *
Now this is more like it. We know pretty much what to expect and we have prepared for it. This is wizardry!
Sounds like Urgur found something. There it is! Ah, revenge.
There must be something worthwhile about this place. I can just feel that we are missing it.

Lens |
There apparently isn't anything else here, no Vorl, not even any cheese. Let's just move on.
Tamoachan, what a bust. Serves us right for listening to that uppity gnome, Urol.
*That night Dyn tosses and turns with sweat pouring from him as he appears wracked in pain, but with a wicked smile on his face. Attempts to rouse him from his state are unsuccessful, and when he awakens his eyes are black (entirely, whites and all). Yes, yes, I think I understand now. After only a few minutes, his eyes return to normal. He looks at his clothes and begins feverishly looking about the ship for as many bright and clashing colors he can find to sew haphazardly onto his robes that he also cuts to jagged ends. Ah, much better.
*later after sailing for some time*
So, Lavinia wants to sail ahead in the Blue Nixie while we take the rear in known pirate waters? Bah. Nobody ever wants to listen. Let her sail on ahead with her "faithful" Jade Ravens.
*a short while later, taking notes in a journal*
A pirate ship is approaching. My kind of battle. They want to board us and search our ship. I don't think so, and everyone seems to agree. Now their captain wants to row out in a launch and parlay. Amrhil is going to row out and talk to their captain. He should be able to escape if anything bad goes down. After returning he indicated the pirates supposedly have the Blue Nixie nearby and want to search our ship or they will spill their blood. Amrhil changed into a bird and flew up and saw what is likely the Nixie on a nearby shore.
We are going to follow the pirates to get close to the Nixie and then spring the trap.
*end of journal entry*
BURN! Yes! BURN! Feel the fiery chaos of the planes consume you! *Dyn's eyes briefly turn black each time he casts a spell during the battle*
*to Urgur after watching him decapitate the held pirate captain*
Ah, the power of magic. You could see the confused helpless terror in his eyes as you prepared to make your cut. Well done.
Well, it appears as though the Nixie's crew is now safe from harm, again.

Lens |
*after freeing the crew of the Blue Nixie, gathering what appeared to be worth taking from the pirate camp, burning the pirate ship that wasn't really even seaworthy to begin with, and heading to a river mouth along our route to refill our water stores*
Come on, Vorl, back in my pack. We need to go make sure the area is safe so we can refill our water barrels in that waterfall. Keep your eyes open and your nose sniffing.
I thought I didn't like the Sea Wyvern. This little row boat is much worse. Heh, nope, no other rats here.
What is that under the water up ahead? *SPLASH!* WHOA! It's huge! A hydra! Yes, Moors, good idea, row for shore.
Vorl, find a Summon Monster I scroll. Oh no, Amrhil's out of the boat, it has him and it's tearing him apart! Urgur is going after him. This is bad...we must all get to shore. Find my Glitterdust scroll.

Lens |
*catching his breath*
Whew, that hydra was tearing all kinds of flesh from bone. It's a good thing it went down pretty fast once we got to shore and organized.
Balim has certainly earned his stay, what with holding his ground against so many vicious bites.
*after refilling the water stores and moving on to a nearby village*
Well Vorl, it looks like this is the last we will see of land for a while. We are leaving the coast and heading off to an island from here out in the ocean. These villagers are so uneducated. At least I was able to buy one scroll I wanted, and we sold off some of our excess gear.
Avner is such a fool.
*after heading south and getting stuck in a circular current*
What a horrible experience that was! Fortunately, Urgur was able to give some magical assistance to the captains and they were finally able to break the Sea Wyvern and Blue Nixie from the current.
According to our navigators we are finally nearing the Northern end of the Isle of Dread, our destination.

Lens |
*completely frustrated, Dyn writes in his journal*
Just perfect! We were finally nearing our destination and about to get out of this accursed boat in a somewhat civilized place no less, but NOOOOO, we have run aground on some sort of giant floating weed.
Our captain calls this stuff the sargosa, but all I know is no self-respecting mage would conjure such a ridiculous abomination.
Well, since we are stuck here, we may as well explore a bit as there appear to be several ships nearby that we can walk to on this floating green carpet.
*ends journal entry*
*after exploring the nearby ship*
Yeah, I don't like plants that reach out and grab either Vorl, but I think the three we destroyed have made this ship relatively safe.
"This looks like the journal of one of this ships passengers. Let me read it aloud, for the group, slowly.
This foul green land is stained with blight. We tried to cut away the weed, but to no avail, and soon had to abandon the tools we used, their edges dulled to misery. At noon I ordered Carus and Twaid out onto the weed to explore. How large can such a place be? The crew grow restless.
It is dusk. Efforts to destroy the weed have failed. I have explored what I could, but this is all weed and mists. When will Carus and Twaid return? Despite the calm, the night is not still, and I feel eyes watching me.
The night brought noises but no attack, but I fear for my brothers, I heard cries in the night – was it them? I feel something is alive here, but what can it be? Captain Grough claim the land had a black heart – maybe Carus and Twaid will have some useful information when they return.
Afternoon. I have decided to find my brothers, and have taken Ranis and Pale with me. They are good brothers, and will aid me as best they can. We shall find the land’s black heart. We headed east, making good headway as only good brothers can. By night we had covered many miles but saw nothing but more of the green.
It is night, and I can hear life. Something moves at the edge of sight. Why do they not show themselves? I can hear them whisper one word, over and over, 'Outsiders...'
It is afternoon. We have come to a terrible place, a forest of weed grown in mockery of real life, a mire of skeletal ships. How many souls have been lost here? Our supplies grow wan, we must return by the morn to the Rage.
It is dawn, and we have returned to the Rage too late. The crew are gone and the green holds her ever fast. Where have they gone?
I can hear them in the day now. They are outside. They are watching. They want me to join them, but I shall not.
Ranis and Pale are dead. They came through the mist, yet they were not the same. I knew them by the tatters of clothes draped over the green that took their flesh. What wore their bodies has been vanquished, but I know now that these were but the children of what dwells at this land's heart. I must seek the mother at this heart, for to destroy the mother is to destroy the brood. If only I had...
The rest is not legible."
