Callous Jack wrote:...keep us updated on how it goes. I was so nervous when I explained to my wife(then my girlfriend) about D&D. She had thought it was a boardgame but said she'd give it try. Thanks, Jack! I ran the game on Sunday. My wife wasn't feeling well and couldn't play, but the girls and I played and had a lot of fun. I've posted an annoyingly long recap in this thread.
My wife will likely be playing the next time (hopefully this weekend). I didn't have to explain too much to her about RPGs when we met. She knew people from school who played and she always had a positive impression of the game, though she didn't really understand what it was all about. She always says that all she really knows about gaming is that people who play RPGs are almost always really smart.
She has a tendency to downplay her own intelligence and also isn't really big into the fantasy genre, so she's never been interested in playing. Now that the girls are playing, though, she says she's willing to give it a try. I doubt it will ever be a big thing for her, but it'll be fun for us to play as a whole family, I think.
Good luck.

No more HD space taken up with pictures of her out of Transfomers and that girl from American Idol! Super! :D
No more WoW-addicted people getting curry sauce or Potnoodles in my keyboard and trashing the space bar by hammering it in a fury because some noob got them killed. ;)

It's been a long week, but it's over. My boss' new baby had some breathing problems over the last weekend, so he took the week off to stay with him in the hospital. The good news is that the prognosis has gotten steadily more positive throughout the week: they're ruling out an infection, the MRI came up normal so no brain damage or anything. So it may be epilepsy, which will likely go away as he ages or it could just be a fluke. We had to shift around our positions, though, so it was just me and the woman we hired for temporary help (who has been a great help) while the Other James picked up my boss' computer work. Unfortunately, this all happened in the busiest time of the year, so all we could really do was tread water and hope that everyone was patient with us. Fortunately, we have more time to get things done, so no harm to us and the baby is looking better with each day. Happy news all around.
My first ebay bid ever arrived today in the form of the Iron Kingdoms Character Guide, World Guide and Monsternomicon. I lucked out with a really conscientious seller, so I got them earlier than I expected, well packed and with lots of communication. Good thing, too, because I'm not buying anything else for a while after these.
Looking forward to a weekend spent reading and cranking out illustrations, sending positive thoughts to my boss and his family.

Driving in to work today, a truck in front of me flipped three times. That's not good, but they 1) didn't involve anyone else, and 2) didn't appear to have been badly injured. Three of those of us who saw the accident were able to block off the road and keep the people fairly controlled until the police got there. Friday the 13th is a b*!@#. At least it served as a very good reminder that paying attention to the road is it's own reward.

I was hauling ass all week to get an order filled for the people in sales only to find out that the dummies I was furiously making (five of each book going out in the fall; a lot of freaking dummy books) weren't really needed today. So, myself and the other James I work with threw up our hands and said,"Leaving early!"
Nevermind that it was already ten minutes to five...

Spooky the Mighty Hunter is out of the hospital!!
He's been in there almost a week. Vet didn't think he would last the first night. I cried many times that day. This cat has slept on my head and stolen my pillows for sixteen years.
When I first met him he was a scrawny thing. I thought he was a kitten, a neighbor's cat. He kept showing up and coming to me and said, "I need you." I ignored him for a week and then finally broke down and started feeding him. The first time my friends saw him curled up on my shoulder they thought I had adopted some sort of rat.
I took him in to the vet and they said, "No, he's not a kitten. He's at least a year old. He's just starving to death." When I started feeding him, he ballooned up huge -- but it was the worms gorging. Nobody thought he would make it. One hell of a start on life.
But Spook, Spooky the Mighty Hunter for short, made it. He's a runt, but his will to live is indomitable. He's a mighty hunter still, though he's lost all his teeth and isn't allowed outside anymore, thanks to his past valiant efforts in the wars of mouse and (unfortunately) bird eradication. He used to bring me mice and let them go inside the apartment so he could catch them again and again. I had to teach him that, no, I don't want it until it's dead. One morning I awoke to find a dead bird in front of the bathroom. "I'll deal with it after I've showered," I thought. When I exited the shower I found just a head.
He's old now, sixteen or seventeen at least. I awoke last Tuesday to the stench of death. Pus and blood and shit were coming out his butt, spread all over my pillow and sheets. I had hoped that it was simply a burst abscess, but no. The vet called me later and said that his insides were rotting out and he had a massive infection throughout his body. The vet didn't think he would live. When I visited him after work Spooky didn't know me. He just wanted to bolt out the little room and go somewhere, anywhere. I bit back my tears and told the vet, I don't mind spending money on that cat. He's tougher than he looks.
Over the next days the vet began to believe me.
He's home now. He's ravenous. He needs food to fight the infection, and he's getting as much as he wants. He's my shoulder buddy (yes, moderately obscure B5 reference). I took almost two hundred pictures of him after we got home. Not so I'll remember him, I suppose, because I won't ever forget him, but to show everyone who's known him that he's still fighting.
His white blood cell counts are still raging, but at least they're down to a third of what they were on Friday. The vet thinks he's got cancer that allowed intestinal bacteria into his bloodstream but let's deal with the infection first and then deal with the cancer.
So. The infection is being fought, on home turf. The cancer we'll deal with next. He probably won't make it the next six months.
But God. Damn. It. He's not dying today.
(I'm crying now again, but this still belongs here in the Good Things thread.)

Spooky the Mighty Hunter is out of the hospital!!
Wow.
I lost my most beloved furry buddy when I was 16, a golden retriever named Mikado. He died of liver cancer, probably because someone poisoned him I'm told (we lived in the country and he ran free), and I had to care for him all summer by myself because my parents were abroad and my brother was at college.
What was really amazing was that he kept hanging on until everyone in the family came home and we were all back together, and then with all of us sitting around him he just died.
Stuff like that can really wake someone up to how much these little furry things love us be they cats, dogs or whatever. I'm really glad I spent all that time with my wagger that summer - I knew it was his last and I blew off a lot of stuff to play with him. All worth it.

Spooky, fresh from the hospital.
Is that your cat Postmonster? What was wrong with it?

Spooky, fresh from the hospital.
He reminds me of those Egyptian cat statues. *hugs Spooky*

What a cool looking cat.
Had a good day bumming all over creation with my wife and son (though he scraped his knees while we were playing in a parking lot, gah, worst…father…ever!), and received promising news from her neurologist.
Had a good day before that bumming all over with my wife and son, until he urinated on me in the book store while I was reading the flap of Yiddish Policeman’s Union (now that’s literary criticism). Got an awesome Applebee’s Carside Cowboy Burger after that, so it was still a good day, plus, hey, it’s only pee). Note to self: leave extra shirt in car (my own fault, I gave him a big thing of watered down lemonade before we left because it was hot, he’s still a sweetie).
Got a notice today that my Proctor Silex sandwich maker has shipped from MyCokeRewards. The quality of my life has increased a thousand fold, wrar! I’ve always wanted one, and it was free (ish). I still have more points left than I know what to do with, even after getting my wife the designer dress, and all it cost me was my esophagus (sadly, the value of a new esophagus is out of my point range)!

Wow, the “good things” thread went to the archive. Not a good sign!
My wife came back from visiting my parents with an awesome present. I thought I was going to have to wait for my father to die before I ever found out, but it turns out my mother finally pried his original (pre-adoption) birth certificate out of him. I can finally research my heritage and medical history. Not that I’m not grateful for my grandfather accepting my father into his life and family, but it’s not quite the same one generation down. Checking “I don’t have a flipping clue” on medical forms gets old.

Got a new job in an American company.
What's better is that I'm on an American pay scale while living in price controlled, developing China - now that's a good deal!
Congrats, that's a wonderful and rare opportunity from what I've heard(my friend from the other thread is my only source, and he is admittedly biased in that he hates visiting China).

Which my wife erroneously referred to as "Jason and the Road Warriors". When I corrected her haughtily(as is my right as husband), she punched me in the arm(which she claimed is her right as my wife). I can't feel my left arm, and she punched me a half hour ago. I don't know whether to be proud or scared.
I also watched the two series that get a lot of groans aroundabouts, but were important for getting me into D&D- King Arthur and the Knights of Justice(which I am still waiting for on DVD) and Pirates of Dark Water(the opposite of Dark Sun!). Anybody else watch these?

Freehold DM |

Pirates of Darkwater was Monkeybirdtastic!
Just checked out the very small PODW RPG- very good, very simple game made for kids. I'd actually show the cartoon to kids and then get them to play the game just to get them into roleplaying overall. Of course, I would like to see a more serious D20/3.5 RPG as well....::strokes fuzzy chin:: Maybe I should add this to my to-do list.
