It's about three hours each way. Very, very not recommended.

That's about what I figured. That's a bit much for a regular commute!

Yikes. I would not want to do that every day.

I bothered to take a look at apartments and homes for rent in the Bellevue area. They're a bit more pricey than my current living situation, but not ridiculously so (about 20% more). Since I know NOTHING of the surrounding areas, are there any other towns/communities/etc. within a half-hour of the office that might be a little less expensive?

I'd say you want to head east on I-90. Issaquah, Snoqualmie, North Bend... but probably no further than that. (We have three employees in North Bend—it's an easier commute than it looks, mainly because the highway is 70 mph most of the way.)

Sweet mother of Blibdoolpoolp the housing costs up there are insane. I thought Arizona was bad! I currently live in a 3 bed, 3 bath HOME (not apartment) with 1780 sq. ft. for $1k/mo. Similar homes up there seem to START at $1700/mo. even in North Bend. Yikes. I suppose I could cope with apartment living, but even those are like $1200 for a 3 bed setup (which is practically a must since we have a child and an artist).

Oh well, the Dude abides.

Okay Fatespinner, whatever you've been huffing, stop huffing it. The Arizona housing market is one of the destinations Californians flee to because it is so cheap. I suppose it might be expensive as compared to the rust belt or Texas, but compared to major metropolitan areas that actual humans actually want to inhabit, Arizona is dirt cheap.

Well, yes, I knew California was pricey. I was also a Real Estate agent here in Arizona for a couple years and watched the average home costs in the area SOAR during my time in that market. It's just that I lived in Indiana prior to moving here and, well... yeah, nevermind. I'll shut up now.

You should also try looking southward, northward and eastward. Renton, Federal Way, Redmond... certain areas of Seattle itself... There are places where the housing is, well, less insane.

Thanks for the advice. Something else I've considered - is it just rent that seems to be so high or are the prices for BUYING a home equally insane? Because, for $1400/mo. I can get a 30 yr. fixed mortgage on a $250,000 house...

Sigh.

::Rhoth wishes he could buy a house that large for that cheap in California::

The house I bought 6 months ago has several hundred less S.F. and our mortgage is several hundred more than that. Paizo staff, can you kick out Bulmahn so I can take his job as the resident architect and McArtor-baiter (that just doesn't sound right)?

Housing prices are even more insane. I read a newspaper article recently that said you basically can't get a house within the Seattle city limits for less than $500,000 (and that's for an absolute dump). And the market is still increasing. In Bellevue, the houses are even more expensive.

Buying a house for a reasonable price is just not really an option, unless you live in the sticks.

Okay I don't feel so bad now. That is worse than Sacramento, California. You can get a decent (smallish) house in a decent suburban neighborhood for $300k

We're hiring too.....and you can buy a nice house in a good neighborhood here for about $145,000....(of course, our version of customer service is "slightly" different, but....we have Starbucks.....and even though it doesn't rain as much as in Washington State, when it does rain...well, it RAINS!

If you get a chance, read the book "Nickel and Dimed: On (Not) Getting By in America" .

It is quite illuminating on just how hard it is to have a house to live in. And, the importance of an education.

Yeah, if you're going to go complaining about CA real estate, you really should at least be in one of the hell markets (SF, LA, SD). The SD real estate market is, as I understand it, fairly similar to the Seattle market in terms of pricing and sizes.

Though, to be fair, you get a lot fewer pink homes up there.

Cosmo makes a perfect cop nick name. Some of my old partners had nicknames like "Sluggo", "Fish" and "Red." The fact that it's your real name only makes it more fun.

Is Cosmo your real name? I had always assumed it was an alias. Care to share the story of your name?

Oh I know there are worse markets. Doesn't mean I can't complain about mine. :)

Here's a whacky question. How far is it from Bellevue to the Canadian Border? I know there used to be a ferry from Victoria BC to Seattle, but it appears to be closed.

There's a ferry from Victoria to Bellingham; it's what I'm taking this August when I move from AK (I'm going from Haines to Bellingham, but the ferry stops in Victoria)--a couple weeks with family in Seattle, then on to Korea! Hey, maybe there'll be the opportunity to visit Paizo!

Go to Alaska Marine Highway for more info on schedules.

I agree 100% that education is important. I even tried to get a good one myself! Unfortunately, the cost of housing prevented me from being able to afford said education and, because my lack of education prevented me from getting a well-paying job, I had to get a second lower-paying job to pay for school which, in turn, prevented me from having the time necessary to get an education.

Damn. This sucks.

Cosmo is my real name, however the background story is kinda long and would entail threadjacking of the highest order.

Perhaps this calls for an update to my profile...

Sovereign Court

I admit, I'm sorry that I didn't jump on the chance to get what I suspect is Cosmo's job - I don't qualify for any of those, but I'm a long experienced Consumer Service Rep who already lives in the area.

Ah, regrets.

Oh well. I'll keep an eye out on the boards for future stuff. And yes - I'm moving to a new apartment in Redmond, having finally found a roommate to split bills with. It's pricy around here.

Pathfinder Starfinder Society Subscriber

Hmm, a $500k house. That'd be the life in South Dakota! A split level house with 3 bedrooms and an unfinished basement is less than $200,000. I've seen the $0.5 million houses. I don't think I could fill them, even with my D&D collection.

Of course, South Dakotans get paid less than Californians.

Just out of curiosity, what is the expected wait time for a response to our applications/resumes? Also, if we are not accepted, will we at least get a 'thanks for playing' e-mail to make us aware of the declination or will the denial be punctuated by silence? Just wanting to know so I'm aware of what to expect. Thanks!

Actually... I was a senior in high school at the time. I was really happy about for about five minutes. Then I realized that I'd be getting the "Cosmo? Like Kramer?"-thing for the rest of my life.

We don't actually have an HR department—each of the three positions is being handled by a different person probably having different timelines and procedures. But we're in pretty immediate need on all three, so I can't imagine the wait time would be too long for any of them.

The chat room is open all the time. The weekly chat is on Tuesday nights. It usually kicks off around 9:00 PM PST (midnight EST).

I don't really "run" the room. I did create it, and am the one who writes the chat summaries. I'm not a Paizo employee, though.

GO HERE: http://irc.otherworlders.org/chat/cf.php and put #pathfinder as the channel

If you're using a chat client, such as mIRC, you can access the #pathfinder channel as follows:
