can paizo use the new stat blocks that were introduced in DMGII after the WOTC breakup, i.e. in Pathfinder?
If not, please don't go back to the old way!!!

We (and by "we" I mean people who aren't me) have developed a pretty snazzy stat block format that takes the useful and neat foundation of the DMGII stat block and Paizos it up a bit.

What the heck do I mean by that? Well, I guess you'll just have to buy the product and take a look-see. ;D

huh.

sorry, just an FYI, but the emoticon doesn't quite make that statement endearing or friendly sounding to 'us', the potential people who might potentially want to buy your product.

posting a example as a blog-post or in this thread would have beent a better move.

Just a wild, crazy guess here. But I'm going to assume the product Mike is referring to is Pathfinder.

I dunno - call me crazy for making a suposition like that, but... *shrug*

Please, please, please give us a peek at the new stat block.

Just a taste.

Pretty please?

Looking forward to it. I've never gotten used to the new WotC stat block. Paizo's new one should be an improvement..........everything else has been.

I do prefer WotC's expanded stat block format to the old one, but I'm sure there is much room for improvement as well. The main part of the new stat block I like is the combat block, so I don't miss things like SR and DR.

I guess this is the first time you've ever read a messageboard post I wrote, then. I use that particular emoticon a lot. (Ask Zherog, I'm sure he's seen so many times it haunts his nightmares.) ;D

Just as long as the AC line has the break down inside of paranthesis!

ex.
AC 20, T 11, FF 18 (-1 size, +5 natAC, +2 dex, +4 armor)
From Mike Mearl's updated Ogre Mage

How does this work, legally? Everything in the stat block (AC, hp, BaB, etc) is OGL. Can you copyright the format and prevent others from using it?

I figured the new stat block just a way of formatting info which is allready OGL, so the stat block is OGL as well.

I'm not sure exactly, so I'll politely withdraw from this thread and let someone with more legal knowledge (like Vic) step in. :)

I'll preface this by saying:

I am not a lawyer. Heck, I don't even play one on TV.

With the disclaimer out of the way...

It's my understanding that you can't copyright a format for presenting data. However, you could trademark. Whether or not WotC has done so, I haven't a clue. I believe I've seen the format in other 3rd party products - but it's possible that those companies paid a licensing fee, or that they got in deep trouble.

Yeah, I know MWP uses the new stat block in the DragonLance books, but I'm not sure if this is because WOTC is okay with anyone using it, or if its because DragonLance is licenced from WOTC, and thus they get to use a few things that "normal" d20 companies don't.
