Malcanthet's connection?

Maure Castle

Liberty's Edge

I know from reading Igglwiv's Demonomicon that Malcanthet is connected to the Maure Castle stuff. Can anyone explain to me in a paragraph how? I want to run an adventure focused on Malcanthet and am thinking of running Maure Castle since I don't have a lot of time (till tomorrow night) to prepare something on my own.

There hasn't been a lot revealed about Malcanthet to date, but she sponsored Elluvia Maure, one of the various members of that powerful and sorcerous family. Malcanthet also participated in the battle that caused the fall of the House of Maure, being summoned by Elluvia for aid/assistance.

Some additional details about Malcanthet's role in that battle is revealed in the most-recent Maure Castle installment, "The Greater Halls" in Dungeon 139, but that's the general gist of what we know thus far.

Liberty's Edge

Alright good, if it's vague then I can incorporate her as I wish. I had run the Demon Whore of B'thuvia one-on-one with two of my players and I think I want to make the main villain of that (who survived) be the same demon as Malcanthet just having used a different name. It oughta work nicely.

Thanks.

Malcanthet's role in the Maure Castle saga is a slowly unfolding one; there's bits and pieces of it scattered throughout all three Maure Castle installments, with a little bit more thrown into the Fiendish Codex and the Malcanthet Demonomicon article. It's a little tough for me keeping track of what's been revealed in the adventures so far and what's bouncing around in my own head on how to develop it further. Needless to say whatever Rob's got planned for her, of course!

In any case, the main things revealed so far about her regarding Maure Castle are:

1: She once had a cult established on the second level detailed in issue #112.

2: Possibly her most powerful mortal servant is Eluvia Maure, one of the house scions.

3: Malcanthet had a direct hand in the fall of the family and the ruin of the castle. There's something somewhere in the castle dungeons she wants, but what it is and whether or not she got it when she invaded the castle and had a hand in the catastrophe is unclear.

4: At least one level of Maure Castle (Eluvia's Pit) is likely a bastion for her minions.

Beyond this it all starts to get pretty complicated, with Abyssal politics and the like that become increasingly not associated with Maure Castle.

One option you might want to consider for the Demon Whore is to make that villain one of Malcanthet's many competitors; there's always some succubus somewhere trying to claim her title. Or if you want to get REALLY complicated, make the Demon Whore an agent of Graz'zt, or even Graz'zt himself in a different form.

Thanks James, I was thinking of that (the agent part) myself already since Graz'zt tends to play a huge role in my area of the group's homebrew world. I'm even working on developing my own AP for us to play after savage tide that's going to focus on Graz'zt, Melcanthet and the demon whore (including a material plane invasion of Azzagrat using rules from Heroes of Battle ^_^ )

Coridan, if you're looking for some great Graz'zt-related reading, check out Sepulchrave's story hour over on ENWorld @ http://www.enworld.org/showthread.php?t=58227 along with the associated Rogues Gallery (PC and NPC stats, rules, etc.) thread @ http://www.enworld.org/forums/showthread.php?t=5652

Brilliant, inspiring writing!

Sheesh, first Graz'zt shapechanges himself to pose as Malcanthet to seduce Kostchtchie, and now this. Is this just something he just does on occasion, or is it just one of his better disguises...? ;)

Now I wonder how many times Malcanthet has shifted herself into Graz'zt's form just to make trouble for him!

If I recall correctly, in Expedition to the Demonweb Pits Graz'zt dons a similar disguise ...

Spoiler:
in that he disguises himself as Malcanthet at the council of demon lords.

** spoiler omitted **

Yes, he does do that. Though it's not 'the' Graz'zt, but rather one of his aspects (who, on a related note, can use 3.5 style warlock invocations and eldritch blasts, which is something that seems very apropos for Grazzy).

I just thought that I'd mention that Reaper does a good (evil?) line of demon lords/ladies in their Dark Heaven series ... although under different names for the most part, most likely due to copyright reasons.

For Malcanthet, try: this figure.

For Graz'zt: this one (they even got the six digits details right!).

(My apologies if I've unintentionally broken some messageboard rules about mentioning products from other companies.)

Since one of the guys from Reaper sought me out and gave me that mini as a gift and said to me, "This was inspired by the Malcanthet stuff you did in the magazines."...

...that seems like it's a pretty good one to use for Mal!

I thought that she looked rather familiar! :)

Allan, I have spent good deal of time reading the thread ... wow, just wow! I'm nearly gone through it all and I don't want it to end : ) so I limit myself to four posts a day.

Are there any other threads you recommend ? Again thanks for getting me to travel the road to Wyre.

1 person marked this as a favorite.

Happy to help, baron! :D Unfortunately, I haven't had any time to update my other Wyre-related bookmarks for non-Rogues Gallery rules discussions that Sep started, and I don't think they work after EnW changed their URLs schema.

Just in case, though, here they are:

The first two are conversions for daemons and such that Sep liked. The last two are for his old non-Wyre SH.

Glad to have helped, Allan!

If you're in the market for them and can be bothered to dig further on Reaper's site, you'll find other familiar faces under new names.

If you're running Savage Tide,

Spoiler:
this one's practically a must-have for Demogorgon and his variations.

This one's good for Orcus (and can be used in other contexts too - like Bloodstone Pass).

A Lolth stand-in is here, and there are reasonable look-alikes for all the true demons (the original types I through VI). I also found some decent devil duplicates (especially for the Ice Devil/Gelugon and the Bone Devil/Osyluth).

One doesn't necessarily need a horde of the lesser fiends, but just one miniature example will set the tone on the battlemat. :)

Thanks for the additional pointers, Bellona: I already own the two spoiler-laden demon princes you mentioned, though I had missed Lolth :D

You're welcome! :)

I'm happy to spread the Reaper good will (since I'm a big fan of their minis for D+D). I can give you the product numbers for the other demons and devils if you want. Fair warning though: since I don't have all of my recommendations "in person" yet, I'm not 100% sure about the size match with stats from the MMs (okay, technically FC1 in some cases). But they sure look the part!

I started priming some of these, will post some pics once I have something sufficiently done to be share-worthy :D

I'm finding that Reaper's site very difficult to navigate. Is there any way to narrow down searches so that I'm not looking at 1,400 results at a time?

Sean Halloran wrote:

(I'm assuming that you are using the Figure Finder function, the link to which is on the left side of each page.)

My best tip is to try different keywords. If you find some miniature which sort-of-but-not-quite fits what you're seeking, then look at its own particular keywords and use/alter them as you see fit.

I hope that this helps ...

Dark Archive

Yeah, thats what I'm using. For some reason the site loads kind of slow for me so having to keep clicking through pages and pages is kind of agrivating. I'll live though, these mini's look really high quality and a good fit for my games.

Another thought on keywords ...

If you're looking for something fiendish, try the following variations: "demon", "devil", and "fiend". For example, I found D+D's Ice Devil/Gelugon under the Mantis Demon pseudonym.

As for slow loading times, I don't know if that is Reaper, your computer, or something in between the two! :)
